Well it was difficult to do that with it on that trolley. Yoru AV has a much heavyer flywheel so that is much easier! It is now starting much better and runs a water pump.
@steamwally true i did not think of the flywheel weight and to be honest my av1 is alot easyer to start now its on a trolly good to hear its starting better will you be attending lincolnshire steam fest this year?
@sidecrank Yes sure see what you mean. Don't get caught up with girls, don't drink or drug, then you will have money to buy more engines. It's a fascinating hobby! Good luck.
Most of the time yes. You can crank it continualy if you want but I have found if it hasn't gone first compression it won't go seccond. It also gave me a nasty kick the other day so I'm a little bit careful to avoid that.
If it was me i would put it back to factory then try it again still be a sod to start but once running im sure it will stay running. But then again i little saying If it aint broke dont fix it lol
I can allways turn the govenor up for starting. I'm thinking I will mount it on a propper trolley after christmas, put a double v pulley on and set it up with a dynamo on one side and a cap start mains motor on t'other end. That was the motor will be idling, not putting out any current once started but in winter I can plug it in to start this! The dynamo can run my lighting set....
LOL! Blow lamp's not a good idea, and it wouldn't light in the cold.... I have slowed it down but it started ok in warm weather, -5 is just too cold for an ally diesel.....
You can use a petrol soaked rag just to get a sniff of fuel up the intake, hold it over just after start. But BE CAREFUL hold it there to long and you will have a run away on your hands....
Well you can block the air intake and that will help (You can never block them completley) but just don't do it with your hand.
You should first shut off the rack on the stop switch, see if it slows, if not then block the intake and let it run (if it's running at a safe speed) until it stops. If it won't stop then as a last resort open the decompressor. (you will almost certainly damadge a fast running engine like that)
hi phil,i left petters in about 1974 or 75.going that far back things get a little muddy. i kept looking at your engine and was thinking it was an ac1. but you call it an ad1. that engine wasn't in production when i left petters and came back home for couple years.i watched you yesterdat and was wondering why you didn't pull out the plunger on top and give it a couple squirts of engine oil. also is that engine variable speed or fixed speed ?you seem to me want to run your engines as slow
Yeah the plate tells me it's an AD, these were made in the early 80's and are still in production now. They are identical to the AC in every respect other than capacity, these are about 60CC bigger. The rest of my engines are big slow running lumps, all meant to run at no more than 700RPM. I wanted to slow this down as it's a bit rauchas and I don't like to see aircooled thrashing away!
Not bad for a clapped out diesel that has probably never had an overhaul in it's life! Probably just needs a decoke and thats it, might seafoam it?! I susspect when new these would go a treat in the cold, they are suposed to start without help in up to -15C. This one just needs a good long run on load and an oil change.
Thats bad ass

Even some folks at school have admitted they wish they had a hobby like mine. It's sad really, some of them just waste their lives away....

Hi Phill, get another one but reverse rotation! It will help you to build your musculature evenly :)
Nice video and engine. Good luck!

Ha ha! I have got a reverse rotation engine but the handle is so lethal I don't use it!

Hard work to start the Lister in the cold winter.
Looks like a lot of stiffness in your arm :D

You cant beat old RELIABLE engines haha!!
Honestly i would get your blowlamp out and heat it and try not to set it alight lol!
Did you say you slowed it down because i remember rightly it started 1st or 2nd swing.
Thanks

I probably when there is snow latter in the year, need to give the neighbers a break from the noise now!
steamwally 1 year ago
thats the bit I dont like about priming. it will start but not keep going it builds you up and then dissapoints you.
the heat did it tho I will have to try a bit of heat next time.
I heard of people years ago lighting a small fire under the engine to get it going even taking out the engine oil and warming it up.
oh I forgot about the diesel fumes on my clothes.

@steamwally how is a runaway stopped is it just simply block off the air or will it run on still.

Oh, and this engine isn't fitted with an oil prime on the head so I made my own on the intake.

Not bad considering the temperature! Must've been quite a common sight trying to get diesel cement mixers rattling into life at one time.
