This tune is definately penned by Shorter. Legend has it that he wrote this piece in a stream of consciousness on the piano at three in the A.M. by candlelight. Apparently it took him no longer than 4 minutes to write it.
Nice playing! I like your style and I've been watching some of your videos. I especially like how laid-back you play on this one. I left a video response that I recorded because i liked your version so much!
Wow, I'm really new to jazz, but that sounded great. I asked for CD's for christmas and my bro got me Herbie Hancock's new album (Joni Letters) and I couldn't follow Nefertiti on it at all. A friend is teaching me how to listen to jazz (he's really good) and told me to come see this post. It is really helpful!
Shorter did compose the tune. He said in an interview for his Artist's Transcriptions collection of solos: "Nefertiti is the one song I wrote in the fastest time. I think I wrote it three or four minutes. Actually it was about three o'clock or four o'clock in the morning, my hands hit the piano and I played it by candlelight."
Alto saxophonist Phil Woods knew how to solo beautifully on Nefertiti. Check out his album "Musique du Bois". He's playing with Jaki Byard, Richard Davis and Alan Dawson.
Horn players may have this opinion because Miles and Shorter decided that they wouldn't solo when this was first recorded, leaving the soloing to the rhythm section. They're discouraged because Miles and Wayne didn't give them an example of how to approach the tune.
You sound wonderful! Where are you based out of? I'd love to grab a lesson if I'm in your area. I really am blown away how easy you make this tune look. And your feel is perfect. Congrats!
One of my all-time favorite songs. You sound great!

Go, boy!
You go, boy!
Nice soloing over one of the most UNDERRATED jazz standards of all time.

This is a great piece because the drums are basically playing a "melody". The traditional rhythm section is reversed.

Good stuff. A tough tune to solo over sometimes.

Ensoniq TS-12 weighted-key synth/workstation. It's a great keyboard, they don't make them anymore.

Dear DLuebbert: Is Artist's Transcriptions collection of solos in hardback copy and available for purchase? Where? Is Nefertiti in it?

Such a difficult song to play, yet you still come up with really interesting and original lines. Really top-class playing.
