at 0:48 , The rich man in his castle, the poor man at his gate,
God made them high or lowly, and ordered their estate.
This just became my least favorite hymn ! ! Those words harken to an age that believed in the divine right of kings, I'm shocked that these words have not been adjusted to reflect the somewhat more enlightened times we now live in.
To me, it is an insult to these talented young men singing their hearts out.
Everybody has their own trials. Just because someone might be better off financially doesn't mean that their life is bliss. God doesn't give us more than we can handle.
Remember that in Christian terms "those who are first become last." What that means is that those with the greater power should use their power to help those with less power, therefore becoming their servants. Imagine a president of a country who was purely unselfish, for instance. Or a king. Sure he makes the rules and has a greater "estate", but he would use it for the benefit of the people, not himself.
So God ordered our estate, but oppression doesn't fit in with his model.
Yes, I like this one better. It was the one I grew up with. I am LDS, and we have something we go to when we're children called primary. It's sort of like a type of Sunday school. This was one of the songs we sang.
The soloists are Chris Robson and George Tarlton. I believe Chinteboy is Chris, b/c he's got music videos of Chris' band "Plan Your Escape." Unless it's a bandmate pretending, it's him. Hi Chris! Love the RHCP covers.

It's simply stating that all creations, including men, are God's. It is in no way an endorsement of DRK, unless you twist it to be so.
Just enjoy the song! :)

All things are bright and beautiful about this song. Any idea where I can get the sheets? I'm playing the cornet.

i'm so glad to have finally found a semi-traditional version of it! the tune at least. I hate how rutter destroyed it.

What the f... "HIGH AND LOWLY, GOD ORDERED THEIR ESTATE"?? never remember such cynical/oppresive words in my version!!
To think that innocents can me made to pay heed to such regressive Confucian views is shameful. They'd happily still have us living under Feudalism!

ie. conveniently "bright and beautiful" for some...

You know, this hymn is not supposed to go this fast, it needs rythm. Yanks have changed it.
Ah well. Never mind. Blessed are the meek...
