NHL has to come back to FOX, ESPN/ABC (basically the same, but when Disney combines the 2 sports on ABC havent been as good as they were in the old days). I know this isnt bout th NHL, but i hate MNF on ESPN, announcers arent bad its juts weird w.out the helmets smashing and the original MNF song, they always have to mess with it. At least some NHL teams r on FS Sports and the old skool songs played everynow and then, but apprently VS. n NBC's contracts r up after this year. Could it be???? lol
@08WSChamps The thing is...Comcast bought NBC (it's in the final stages, I believe...the FCC approved the sale), so we might see an extension and probably some more NHL games on NBC (as in, bringing it up to the regional level rather than one game a week), as well as other sports like IndyCar.

Thnx to comcast i highly doubt ESPN or FOX would have a chance to agree on a contract with the NHL since comcast will probly offer way more. If it were as simple as televising games on Saturday nights, ABC would still have a contract with the NHL. BTW, 08WSChamps, even though NBC's contract expires, ABC couldn't bid for NHL rights because of their NBA commitment (increasingly limited as that is).

man! those saturday afternoon games on abc when i was a kid! it was the best feeling in the world to listen to this theme and sit down and watch the flyers (if they were in the game.) with my dad! greatest feeling ever...
If there is anyone who treats the NHL like an unwanted step child it would be NBC. They don't start playing weekly games on NBC until late in the season and even then its played late in the afternoon.
People don't realize that even if the NHL comes back to ABC and ESPN, we will most likely never hear this theme again. ESPN has taken over all sports on ABC, that's why it when from ABC Sports to ESPN on ABC. The good thing about this is, we would get to hear the NHL on ESPN theme.
ABC only showed five or six regular season games. If ESPN gets the rights again, there won't be any coverage on ABC. By 2016, I don't think there will be any sports on ABC at all.
Yeah I can understand the ratings in 2004 might have been kind of low but hockey as much as I hate to admit because I loath him under Bettman has really become more mainstream and by supporting the AHL, ECHL, and CHL by putting teams in non NHL markets it has peaked interest in the main league. Bettman though is making a huge mistake by not allowing the Coyotes to move back to canada because them being in PHOENIX IS NEVER GOING TO WORK. What are your thoughts?
Let's clarify somethings here: Note that the NHL signed with NBC in May 2004, long before the 2004 finals took place. If ABC continued to televise the NHL they demanded to show fewer regular season games, possibly only 2 or 3 games, compared to 5 in their final four seasons televising the NHL. ABC now had the NBA, also. These are a few reasons why ABC and the NHL went seperate ways.
I think the lockout and Gary Bettman are the main causes we get shitty NHL coverage on VS and NBC. I like ESPN/ABC a lot better, and I like CBC but thats it.
You say that like it was amazing on ESPN/ABC. I hated the coverage on those stations cause ESPN/ABC treated hockey like the unwanted step child, NHL on ESPN got like 1 game a week, and on ABC There was bearly ever a game on. maybe like 4 games the entire year.and on ABC those games are the most important for exposing the game because not everyone has ESPN, but even basic antenna own ABC.
At least on Versus/NBC the sport is covered for several games a week, including 11 or 12 games on NBC
Being a Flyers fan, I get to have Clement as color commentator for about 50% of the local broadcast games, Keith Jones being the guy for the other half. In my opinion, they are both great color commentators, but are their voices irreplacable? hell no. Besides, I think that while Versus/NBC does not always have the best announcers, they do have Doc Emerick, who I think is a very good announcer. My point is, Hockey needs exposure and Versus/NBC provides that, and the quality is ok.
Im a fellow Flyers fan as well, but unfortunately im far away from Philly for a while, too bad I dont get Clement during a game and I dont have the money to piss away to get NHL Center Ice. We might be able to agree that Doc is the only one with talent on VS/NBC, but you would agree that not having this sick ass theme along with with a good opening and familiar voices of Clement and Thorne sucks balls.
Eventually, Gary Thorne and Bill Clement can commentate on other things besides the Frozen Four finals and IIHF World Juniors.
Damn ESPN for giving them a contract in the mid 2000s.

The NHL had wanted ABC to televise games on Saturday nights. They didn't want to do it. Reason number 22 why the NHL and ABC split up.

Primetime weekend and second ohalf of of playoff NHL games would be played on ABC. That is how it used to be done.
Same when NBA was on NBC. NBC should give NHL to ABC/ESPN and NBA should be given back to NBC. Only makes perfect sense.

I think if the Coyotes go under, Winnipeg or Quebec should go after them. They could be the Jets again or possibly be a new Nordiques franchise.
