@mitsoulasss they need a strip down at 4000 hrs, not rebuilt. They will cruise 100 to 140mph until the fuel runs out... top speed depends on how they are set up... 110% for racing for example (200mph)... you can run this until no fuel, but in salt water conditions you must also monitor any build up via the EGT and "flush on the fly" so technically it would run until the fuel or fresh water flush tanks run out.
@mitsoulasss well the bugatti veyron runs out of fuel in 12 minutes at top speed....the tires come off the rim in 15...thats at 253 mph....this thing is holding a candle to that granted its on water but i imagine its burning fuel fast...being an ocean going vessel also leads me to believe that its concealing a substantially sized fuel cell within its beautiful exterior
@hydroNblow I think it burns about 5% more than a piston engine of like HP. The big negative with turbines is they burn the same amt at idle speeds as they do at WOT. Other than that, and the fact they are very sensitive to salt water, they make more sense than pistons IMO. Lighter and far more reliable among other attributes. Turbines will run all day at 100%. You will blow a 1500hp piston engine very quickly putting that much stress on it.
@krypekeeper Maybe more but if those were piston engines they would be burning high-dollar race gas, where these turbines can burn diesel, kerosene, jetA, waste veggie oil etc. It would cost a LOT more for 1400hp piston motors in fuel.
And unlike piston motors these turbines are ultra-reliable, especially coming from Turbine Marine, one of the top turbine shops in the world. TM knows how to rig turbines for the very harsh salt water marine environment.

Yes... using raw water to cool the exhaust system keeps the engine bay very cool... it also helps around the dock. The racing versions use dry exhausts reducing systems etc.
turbine water injection has been around for a while, but obviously wasnt practical in aircraft. i assume that water coming out the exhausts is exactly that, a water injection system. man. that must be epic power for the turbine size.
@alvinski100 Its also the fact that because they cant put forward facing turbines they have to cool it with water cause the air cant cool it like with aircraft. The air is being brought in from the top so its not having direct air intake.

I read this is supposedly a 200 MPH boat but it definitely wasn't doing anywhere near 200 MPH in this video. As is evident by the shadow on the water the camera/chase Helicopter carrying the camera man was an R44 and an R44's never exceed speed is around 150mph. So the fastest this boat could have possibly been going is about 120, Simply because no sane pilot would ever fly an R44 faster, especially that low
This one has TM 1450's so she'll run 140 mph all day long. Light fuel with two guys and good air she'll probably top out in the 160's. The Nor-Tech hull is quite heavy and strong and she has a lot of accessories.
No thrust... all of the power is transfered through the engine shaft to a gear box and drives. The engines are from military helicopters. The big exhausts are water cooled for safety, which is why it looks like thrust.
ok your right i did forget to think about friction and on the ocean/gulf the waves, not wanting to beat the boat to death. Im on the Mississippi where it smooth mostly and we can run them wide out from point A to Point B. and there im thinking the boat, with twin turbines, would outrun tour average citizen heli that films most of these videos. feel free to inform me more positive comments welcome.
as a major boating and used to be air enthusiast, the helis being used here most likely are not going to top that boat with around 120 knots top.(helicopter) Although i could be over guessing the power to weight of the boat. i have herd of using Diesel in powerboats but once again it comes into power over weight.
The power to weight ratio is a major plus, but you also need to consider the hull design and balance of the weight, unlike heli's, at 120 to 200 mph boats have both aerodynamics AND friction to consider... and that frictions is not consistent on the ocean... a recipe for fun.
not to mention wide open in 4 foot seas would mean bigger jumps which means less time the prop is in the water equals less thrust, not to mention the rough as hell, in smooth water the boats will do 210, in a offshore race 80 to 90
Your slightly incorrect. Its depends on the helicopter being used. The one in this vid appears to be and R44. In this case you would be correct. Some teams have Astars or Jet Ranger III, both of which can cruise at 130kts with little effort.

Hi olaguma, I'm not aware of diesel engines being competitive in offshore racing, We have rigged a performance boat with diesels... not too much performance though due to the power to weight ratio of diesels. I guess using the advances made by Audi in winning everything in endurance auto racing with their diesels would work... but the money required is a barrier. Turbines have such an amazing power to weight ratio and they can run on diesel, kerosene, natural gas, bio fuel etc.
Our turbines would keep running with blade parts , vanes, etc going out the exhaust , while ITT rose and torque dropped off, but still making lots of power for a while. (aircraft) I raced hydros back in the early 70's when turbine boats came out, Lyc t-53's or similar, salt building on the compressor blades a big problem back then-used particle separators-how do you beat that nowadays.?
Alvinsky100-thanks for the reply-its been awhile but I think I was referring to the video that showed a high speed inadvertent shutdown of the motors-vid said near disaster at 160-I was referring to an aircraft I used to fly with a turbine that the over speed probe would shut down the fuel controllers over an exceedance of 101.5 percent. That was near disastrous to me when the over speed probe malfunctioned-hence I said manual control and warning annunciation is better. .
Give me a 36' skater with triple promaxes- you will have fun all day outrun most stuff and will not have to call vessel assist. It would be cool to ride in something like this.
Automated systems that save the engines but put you in a position of no control is not good-- make it a driver or throttleman operatied shutdown-save yourselves---
The system let's you know that there is an issue... big red flashing light... it's your choice is you want to shut the motor down. These turbines can run when they're 90% falling apart, that's why the military and helicopters use them. We've found that 99% of issues experienced are from basic marine stuff, water pumps, etc. These turbines will run forever and it's very very rare to have a problem... racing is different of course as it is with any motor sport.

This one has TM 1450's so she'll run 140 mph all day long. Light fuel with two guys and good air she'll probably top out in the 160's. The Nor-Tech hull is quite heavy and strong and she has a lot of accessories.

How is the boat propelled? Is it just jet thrust or is the power transferred through props?

No thrust... all of the power is transfered through the engine shaft to a gear box and drives. The engines are from military helicopters. The big exhausts are water cooled for safety, which is why it looks like thrust.

ok your right i did forget to think about friction and on the ocean/gulf the waves, not wanting to beat the boat to death. Im on the Mississippi where it smooth mostly and we can run them wide out from point A to Point B. and there im thinking the boat, with twin turbines, would outrun tour average citizen heli that films most of these videos. feel free to inform me more positive comments welcome.

as a major boating and used to be air enthusiast, the helis being used here most likely are not going to top that boat with around 120 knots top.(helicopter) Although i could be over guessing the power to weight of the boat. i have herd of using Diesel in powerboats but once again it comes into power over weight.

The power to weight ratio is a major plus, but you also need to consider the hull design and balance of the weight, unlike heli's, at 120 to 200 mph boats have both aerodynamics AND friction to consider... and that frictions is not consistent on the ocean... a recipe for fun.

not to mention wide open in 4 foot seas would mean bigger jumps which means less time the prop is in the water equals less thrust, not to mention the rough as hell, in smooth water the boats will do 210, in a offshore race 80 to 90

Your slightly incorrect. Its depends on the helicopter being used. The one in this vid appears to be and R44. In this case you would be correct. Some teams have Astars or Jet Ranger III, both of which can cruise at 130kts with little effort.

@alvinski 100: I have a question which isn`t related to this video.
I heard rumors about that in Powerboat racing there was not just Blown V8 & V12 Lamborghinis and Turbines but there was also very succesful diesel variants??? they were canceled because it was somekind of cheating??? do you know any +/ - about that in powerboats and if you know if they were 2or4-strokes and what kind...a V8/V12 or other and how many turbines they had???

Hi olaguma, I'm not aware of diesel engines being competitive in offshore racing, We have rigged a performance boat with diesels... not too much performance though due to the power to weight ratio of diesels. I guess using the advances made by Audi in winning everything in endurance auto racing with their diesels would work... but the money required is a barrier. Turbines have such an amazing power to weight ratio and they can run on diesel, kerosene, natural gas, bio fuel etc.

Our turbines would keep running with blade parts , vanes, etc going out the exhaust , while ITT rose and torque dropped off, but still making lots of power for a while. (aircraft) I raced hydros back in the early 70's when turbine boats came out, Lyc t-53's or similar, salt building on the compressor blades a big problem back then-used particle separators-how do you beat that nowadays.?

Alvinsky100-thanks for the reply-its been awhile but I think I was referring to the video that showed a high speed inadvertent shutdown of the motors-vid said near disaster at 160-I was referring to an aircraft I used to fly with a turbine that the over speed probe would shut down the fuel controllers over an exceedance of 101.5 percent. That was near disastrous to me when the over speed probe malfunctioned-hence I said manual control and warning annunciation is better. .

Give me a 36' skater with triple promaxes- you will have fun all day outrun most stuff and will not have to call vessel assist. It would be cool to ride in something like this.

Automated systems that save the engines but put you in a position of no control is not good-- make it a driver or throttleman operatied shutdown-save yourselves---

The system let's you know that there is an issue... big red flashing light... it's your choice is you want to shut the motor down. These turbines can run when they're 90% falling apart, that's why the military and helicopters use them. We've found that 99% of issues experienced are from basic marine stuff, water pumps, etc. These turbines will run forever and it's very very rare to have a problem... racing is different of course as it is with any motor sport.
