just a tip: right after you are done clipping put him in the regular tank, or the recovery tank if you wish, and you should create bubbles around the fish by waving your fingers around it or put them under the filter return to get air past their gills. also be careful with that clove oil it could possibly kill the fish in high concentrations.
how much clove oil did you use? i think its only supposed to take them like a minute or two to be back to normal after being put back into tank water.
thanks for posting this. I tried to trim my puffer's teeth without clove oil and is was ok and he is fine but using the clove oil looks much easier. I am going to try that today :)
I've currently got 6 SAPs together with some tetras and apistogrammas. at first none of the puffers ate flake, now after six months 3 of them eat flake but snails as well. we learn as we go :)
I'll try to make a video if I'll get to trim some SAPs teeth.
FYI - this puffer had access to live snails 100% of its life in my aquarium. Furthermore, there were often live ghost shrimp and/or dried crustaceans available. Instead, this puffer (unlike my others) chose to eat the flakes and soft food that were also available. Ultimately, his teeth grew to the point that he was loosing a lot of weight (relative to a 2 inch fish) and cutting his teeth became my last hope to save his life. No doubt the video sucks (sorry), but the results were successful!
Its definitely possible. A pain, but possible. You have to raise ramshorn snails for them, just set up a rubbermaid tub with aquatic plants outside and they will proliferate in the summer. In the winter, give them the smallest crab legs from the store that you can find, which sounds expensive, but really, they eat so little of it, its not. amazon puffers arent for "sit back and watch" keepers. Those who have a bit more time can keep them without trimming, and traumatizing both fish and keeper:)

Wow, it seems you both did a great job! You performed the "surgery" swiftly, and cleanly.
That clove oil was no joke - how much did you put? It was very effective LOL!
Also, what happens if a puffer fish breathes in too much air? And what would make it breathe too much air? If it was out of the water for too long?

This comment has received too many negative votes show
why could you do that while it was in the water. You should have filed them. that was really cruel, unless your a surgeon. I hiope he's okay now.

Wow, fascinating. I love puffers, they really have individual personalities..and so curious!

Still, because of this experience, I only keep puffer fish in tanks without fish that eat flakes and/or other soft foods.

by the way, your puffer is really thin, you are not feeding it the proper nutrition it needs

maaaan, you should learn how to take videos

how far do u cut it? just before the gums?
initbludz 3 years ago
Flake food is really bad for any type of puffer. Not only does it not wear down their teeth, but it also lacks the appropriate nutrition.

whats up with your crappy videographer. I didnt even see you do the trimming.

shitty filming...don't even see you trimming its teeth
ultrafishaddict 3 years ago
They should never be trimmed as it is to stressful for them, they should be propperly cared for with feedings of snails at least twice a week.

they overgrow regardless
hoohainstated 3 years ago
if they overgrow regardless, who trims their teeth in the wild? Of course their teeth can be maintained with a good diet...
daintyhyena 3 years ago
in the wild they are literally eating snails and crustaceans all day long, you simply cant keep up with that in the aquarium

Definately looks like he swallowed air--probably when you netted him out of the tank.
Pufferpunk 3 years ago
Next time you clip his teeth, you should video it.
snotbog1 3 years ago
It would help if you actually held the camra to wear you can see him clipping.
