כמה שהכתוביות והבלונים בסרטון מתאמצים להציג את זה כאירוע קטסטרופלי בקנה מידה עולמי, העובדות הפשוטות הן שיש כאן כינוס מדעי מאורגן ויש כאן קומץ שמפגין באופן לא חוקי. ההתרשמות שלי שהמשטרה הפרידה את הכוחות בסך הכול בלי יותר מדי כוח.

אפשר להתווכח על המשמעות של הממצאים ההיסטוריים לימינו, ועל השאלה אם נוכחות ישראלית במקום לפני 2900 שנה רלוונטית לסכסוך פוליטי של ימינו. אני לא נוקט עמדה בוויכוח הזה.

הבעיה היא שגם המפגינים לא. הם לא מנהלים דיון אידאולוגי, אלא משמיצים את הכינוס עצמו בטענה של פוליטיזציה של המחקר, וזה לא הגון ולא רציני.

Previously, we've seen demonstrations from the Left about Israeli policy, but here we see a demonstration against *research*. Is the research untrue, partially or entirely? If so, the claims made at the conference, of archeological findings in the City of David, should be publicly refuted, backed up by the relevant facts.

If, however, the findings are true, and the demonstration is only over the *intent* of those presenting the archeological findings, I find that extremely problematic. Because then what the demonstrators are saying is that they oppose presenting true research findings, who'se only "crime" is that they might be interpreted by the listener as providing a political conclusion as well.

There's no end of true facts that either side of the political spectrum highlight with the hope of swaying public opinion. Either we believe that people fundamentally have the right to draw their own conclusions, or we don't. If we don't, then this amounts to demagoguery against the very human values the demonstrators are trying to defend.
