Chrissie is one of a kind. This is a rocked out version of the song. PERFECT. Jewel looked like a little girl on stage when she did it. Chrissie looks like a Rock Goddess. BTW, that bassist looks like the needle did a little damage to him.
Chrissie Hynde is a total badass. In the '70s she was in fucking charge of her band when few women were. But do not ever forget Patti Smith when mentioning Chrissie, Joan Jett, or any of the other ass-kicking women of R&R.
ALL CAPS BECAUSE I AM NOT A GOOD TYPIST. BUT AMERICAN IS SPELLED W/ A CAP. AND ONLY A HIGHER POWER CAN (FOR ME) SAVE ME FROM ADDICTION. SORRY I WAS SO LONG REPLYING BUT I JUST GOT OUT OF DETOX FOR THE TOOMANYTH TIME.
Incredibly strong woman singing from the heart. All true to her heart and the losses she endured during those crazy years. Amazed I'm still here when I think back on it all. Milk blood to keep from runnin out. Jewel doesn't have a clue.
@GDS4VR Take it easy. And let me guess, you're an american that's aching to preach to all of youtube how christ will save our lives and stop everyone from ever thinking about drugs by using all caps
im a 45 y.o. punk and recovered junky....this song and version makes me sob.ive buried 9 of my best friends and it never stops calling you back. off the subject, ive seen them 3 times here in detroit and every show was better than the last.
Pretenders are a very, very good band. This song of Neil Young is one of my favorites. But this interpretation fails, sorry. A german colloquial : Shoemaker, go on and make shoes (and nothing else! ). Trying to imitate another is the highest form of reverence but this no good one, sorry again. It lacks both the unique voices of the singers as she's not using her own wonderful voice and is not able to reach the special moments of Young's.
Sorry, but I disagree with you, just think of all the cover versions done in blues, think of the Rolling Stones themselves...New cover version give a new breath of life, new feelings, new emotions... please reconsider...
@totoaklan@dsfddsgh is not being a moralizing conservative, just pointing out that being a junkie is a self imposed death sentence, just as the song is pointing out.
Great rendition of this song. I had this whole show on good quality vhs, but for some stupid reason transferred it to ep. Still have tit but not as good quality.
FUCK !!!!! Are all of you completely fucking brain dead !!!! You've all missed the bloody point . . . Mr Young could have written this exclusively for her . . . Pete Farndon and James Honeythingy, the original bassist and guitarist, her partner as well, both fell victim to the needle . . . there is no one more qualified to sing about the damage done, not to mention capable - quad erat demomstrandum, with the exception of Iggy, Keef, Eric and Nick !!! You're all caught up in your own shit !!!
@MfromFrance Crosby said that neil walked into the woods and wrote the song ohio in ten minutes the grouop was able to get the record out right away without the usual record company red tape
@spacepatrolman . . . apologies to you, Audry526 and MfromFrance . . . you guys did get it . . . just got overwhelmed by the vast majority's reaction to a most poignent rendering of a great song . . . . Spacepatrolman, you are most correct, Ms Hynde was never a junky but she certyainly saw, up close and ugly, the needle and the damage done . . . peace
Tough to do Neil's songs as well as the maestro himself. I saw The Pretenders open for Neil @ the Greek Theatre in L.A. (2003?) & she kissed the stage because Neil would follow her onto it...what a great compliment...& from the BEST female rocker ever!!!!!!
I love their rendition of this song. I remember when this aired for the grand opening of the rock and roll hall of fame and being blown away by the performance.

Chrissy knows of what she sings. She lost two band members to over doses. It happened, I believe, in the early 1980's, and was tragic.
