Sempre splendido Placidone...

Have to agree with you. Domingo maybe the best conducter of the famous tenors but when it comes to singing he´s overrated and here it´s absolutely obvius if you just listen.
Indeed... should we not all? I mean to learn and grow... and not just in an artistic way. Only the fool does not learn. Turandot is one of my fav operas :) You? I send my kind and warm regards my friend in music.
Adoro Domingo.
Maybe Mr. Inquisitive would like to post a video here showing us what real opera should be like, who knows maybe he can sing better than Mr. Placido Domingo (my total respect and admiration for this man) the best tenor in the world, the world!!!! Is there someone else that can sing like him that forgets what's around him when it comes to interpreting, his soul and mind is one. Simply the best of the best no one can sing with all that sentiment.
Azteq-Try the liked of Corelli, Tucker, del Monaco, Bjorling, Pava etc etc..you'd get an idea. Italian repertoire should be sung by someone who's got an italian sound. A hooted and throaty sound with a limited vocal range doesn't cut as seen here.
''Is there someone else that can sing like him that forgets what's around him when it comes to interpreting, his soul and mind is one.'' True ! But that is the case with Domingo, not with me - the listener ! Sorry, but I could never really identify with most of his performances. For me there are more suggestive singers then Domingo.

Charro-While you were living a mediocre life in a shit hole in Venezuela, I was listening to opera in most reputable venues. Get a clue you little idiot. You're too unrefined to know what's superb and what it not even if your feeble life depended on it. You're just another latino/hispanic belonging to the Domingo hooligans.
shit hole? jajajaj, thank god i have more than i would need for three lifes on a road and a house with enough space to make my own theatre. Probably if i present opera here I will invite you and all your family. All of that because i'm a "latin-domingo's hooligan-mediocre-oil seller-living in a shit hole venezuelian". ahhh and a tenor studying by the way.
Charro-Domingo does lots of things with equal mediocrity. He's the jack of all trades, and master of none. As a conductor, he even managed to get booed in one of the most tolerant top opera houses, the Met. He tried composing, and ended up being a joke. His singing career is a laughing stock among inner circles of opera. I'd suggest you get a clue. High notes are not the only problem he's got. He sounds hooted, throaty and pushed. He would have made a good mariachi singer, but not a tenor.
the insult is the last weapon of an animal who doesn't find reason in IT'S thought . why are you mad? is he your husband, your wife is not getting late whith you anymore? your'e a poor idiot trying to do critics. the man is considered one of the best by million ignorants including me, so what? get a gun and kill yourself, or a dildo or simply stop writing bullshit. probably you tried to sing and couldn't do it, your'e frustrated. i doubt you will ever have the 100th part of the knowledge he has.
Mr.Inquisitive, how could someone like yourself possibly know what the inner circle of the operactic elite think seeing that you are not a singer nor probably an high profile aristocrat. So, stop being so pretensious.
Basso-it's called connections through friends and family. I'd suggest you find some too. Otherwise you'll be scraping the bottom of the operatic barrel as a career and singing in 3rd or 4th tier venues.
You're free to like whomever. It's a free world (most of it at least). As far as Mingo's singing is concerned...well the proof is in front of your eyes. It's overrated and inferior in many ways.
No. I am not Australian. But let me veture a guess: You're an untainted moron. People call him Mingo for a specific reason. Go do your research. Pinhead!
TheInquisitive4Ever: A man that started playing a piano in a bar, formed to be tenor being baritone, is a wonderful orchestra director and sang in the most important theatres of the world is not a joke, we probably, the Mediocre and ordinary people, are a joke next to him. Excuse my english, is fatal but i hope you could get the whole meaning of this. P.S: This one was not a good performance i have to say but watch and listen to his recording whiht Leontyne Price and Eva Marton.
Charro-Get your facts straight. Domingo has been a top salesman for opera houses. What ever they told him to sing for pay, he did while the publicity machine backed him up for commercial reasons. Service to the art form was never his purpose like the ones who have gone before him. He was a box office success thanks to unsuspecting and ignorant people like you.
Dear TheInquisitive4Ever, I think about now every opera lover and user of YouTube has got your message about Domingo, Villazon a.o. Your point of the lack of technique by singers is lawful and very often to the point. (Sometimes you don't reckon with a few matters - but ok, you have a very good hearing). Your tone on this medium however is sad. About that one could probably say it's "monochromatic and pushed". Not everyone is a musician or music expert, so for God's sake just let everyone enjoy
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Fabbrizzio-Try to makes sense. As a hispanic you do not need to act as an surrogate to MINGO. The production you're watching here was a pedestrian performance by any standard one might apply. Have you even listen to the likes of Corelli, del Monaco and Tucker. DOmingo is a joke next to them. Instead of being an ethnocentric zealot, try to acquire some knowledge.
everybody knows domingo's problems whiht high notes but that is not it, is not enough. Acting, preparing a roll, musicality. why do you think he has been so acclaimed during all this years? media? no, he is, whith or whithout a high B or C one of the best interpreters of opera, and probably that makes you mad because not having corelli's or del monaco's natural and phisical qualities he achieved success, the highest any tenor can get in a career.
Charro-What are you talking about? Singing, or I should say, decimating 130 roles is not called artistry. It's called artistic prostitution, and shows a complete lack of desire of artistic excellence. Physically, it it impossible to develop a role to excellence when one sings 130 roles in a 40-45 tear career. What preparation are you talking about? Singing for the sake of singing, thereby mostly delivering mediocre performances is not called artistry.
@mrcharro Perhaps the assumption is that Del Monaco had natural qualities, But he had to build his voice 1 step at a time.Del Monaco could not be heard past the 3rd row when 1st appearing on the scene.Don't you think a world class tenor should have good hi-notes?& stay within the repertoire that is suited for him?I think many of the spinto roles were just too big for his voice& many times he became strangled in the passaggio in spite of his interpretations&beautiful quality of voice.perplexed
Bjorling is one of my fav tenors but his Calaf was too lyric as he was a light lyric tenor. The best renditions of Calaf was by the likes of Tucker, del Monaco and Corelli. One can safely say that Corelli pretty much owned the role of Calaf along with Radames in Aida. Note that all the tenors mentioned here a master technicians with a beautiful voice. It's a matter of matching the voice to the roles at this level of excellence.
Listen again, this time with the heart, not the mind. Drop your pre conceived notions, they get in the middle. Domingo does not know you, and holds you no grudge. Why do you?
Birdie-You might like a darker timbre. But do you also like a hooted, throaty, monochromatic and pushed sound produced by a fundamentally flawed technique, which doesn't have the upper register to support "expect" top notes? Such hooted hispanic voices do not fit well with the Italian prepertoire which calls for a bright and resonant voice which is full of harmonics. I highly doubt you know the difference though. Most Domingo fans do not LoL
"hooted Hispanic voices do not fit well with the Italian prepertoire which calls for a bright and resonant voice which is full of harmonics"
No they fit, veeery nicely. Domingo's voice here is beautifully mellow. In fact I have not heard such a beautiful merge between singers, choirs and orchestra that here occurs. This aria in particular is very tender and sensitive. So " hooted and Hispanic" very nice here.
Sorry Inquisitive4ever, but Domingo has his flaws and his virtues.
I've always thought one of the really nice things about Placido Domingo is that, besides having a beautiful voice, he looks like a leading man. Tall, dark, and handsome, you know? I'm partial to his rendition of this song over Corelli's or Bjoerling's... I tend to prefer a darker timbre. But that's just preference.
@musicsongbirdie It's wonderful that You like Domingo over Corelli.but in no way is Domingo's voice darker than Corelli's.I saw them both live.Corelli's voice is much darker and FCreally controls&dominates the aria with mezza voce and a better vocal line without straining. It's not just interpreting the role, but the voice should be suitable for the opera. There are also many recordings with Domingo that are enhanced to make his voice sound larger, which I find very deceiving to fool the public
I'm with kl2000kl. Bjorling was the most complete Calaf, it's a shame he never performed it onstage. Perhaps the most powerful was Del Monaco, the most heroic Corelli, the most lyrical Pavarotti. But Bjorling had it all, an amalgamation of all the above qualities.
As much as I love Bjorling as Calaf, the fact that he (and Pavarotti) could sing that part is evidence of outstanding technique. If mere mortal lyrical tenors try their hand at Calaf, they're likely to ruin their voices. Bjorling apparently even told his daughter that he had to go full-bore when next to Birgit Nilsson in Turandot. With his technique, he could do that without damaging anything. I know tenors who have been less lucky.
Jussi Björling was the best Calaf of all time. Many people forget that this is a very romantic role not just heroic. That´s why he´s better suitet than Corelli for this role. Corelli is the second best Calaf though.
So was mine, corelli´s voice was only maid by god to delight us all with his role of calaf, it was divine, subline, the powerful sound of corelli´s voice was unique. I agree my friend.
not as good as the 1988 performance that someone posted. It's a little flat.

There are pros and cons in this performance...
Bad: 1:48 to 2:07 is weak. The high Bb is really strained.
Good: :57 to 1:03 is very good. There's some ringing when he sings "con te." Also some nice phrasing.

TheInquisitive4Ever 2 years ago
Mingo? Let me guess, you're Australian?
runbambirun 2 years ago

TheInquisitive4Ever 3 years ago
Dear TheInquisitive4Ever, I think about now every opera lover and user of YouTube has got your message about Domingo, Villazon a.o. Your point of the lack of technique by singers is lawful and very often to the point. (Sometimes you don't reckon with a few matters - but ok, you have a very good hearing). Your tone on this medium however is sad. About that one could probably say it's "monochromatic and pushed". Not everyone is a musician or music expert, so for God's sake just let everyone enjoy

TheInquisitive4Ever 3 years ago
everybody knows domingo's problems whiht high notes but that is not it, is not enough. Acting, preparing a roll, musicality. why do you think he has been so acclaimed during all this years? media? no, he is, whith or whithout a high B or C one of the best interpreters of opera, and probably that makes you mad because not having corelli's or del monaco's natural and phisical qualities he achieved success, the highest any tenor can get in a career.
mrcharro 3 years ago
Charro-What are you talking about? Singing, or I should say, decimating 130 roles is not called artistry. It's called artistic prostitution, and shows a complete lack of desire of artistic excellence. Physically, it it impossible to develop a role to excellence when one sings 130 roles in a 40-45 tear career. What preparation are you talking about? Singing for the sake of singing, thereby mostly delivering mediocre performances is not called artistry.
TheInquisitive4Ever 3 years ago
@mrcharro Perhaps the assumption is that Del Monaco had natural qualities, But he had to build his voice 1 step at a time.Del Monaco could not be heard past the 3rd row when 1st appearing on the scene.Don't you think a world class tenor should have good hi-notes?& stay within the repertoire that is suited for him?I think many of the spinto roles were just too big for his voice& many times he became strangled in the passaggio in spite of his interpretations&beautiful quality of voice.perplexed

Beautiful setting, great synchronicity between all involved in this production. Magic.

I like Domingo, I always liked his great voice, but here he's very week. Actally, his voice broke. Listen 1:59-2:3.

TheInquisitive4Ever 3 years ago

Fairness is a +.

Ricciarelli's hat is hilarious :D
musicsongbirdie 3 years ago 2

But Bjorling had it all, an amalgamation of all the above qualities.
fitzhorgan 3 years ago

Corelli is the second best Calaf though.
kl2000kl 3 years ago
Five stars! It´s down to personal preference.
For me Corelli is better in this role.

Hear to Domingo at Metroplitean production 1988, maybe better then Corelli

So was mine, corelli´s voice was only maid by god to delight us all with his role of calaf, it was divine, subline, the powerful sound of corelli´s voice was unique. I agree my friend.
