@AJ83x My 2009 thinkpad with 8gb ram and a 64gb crucial c300 running on sata1 boots in 15 seconds. And it's a 1.8ghz core2duo not a fuckin i7 .. something is wrong here.
@djruinerdotcom It is said in the description that this is a very bloated installation of Vista, there is lots of crap installed, so bootup takes longer. The boot time is not comparable to another computer, the video just shows the difference on THIS PC and installation between a raptor HDD and vertex SSD. Now i have a fresh installation of windows 7 and ofcourse it boots much faster.
@AJ83x Ok well all I was saying is I hope its an old laptop, you could have just said. No, but it was a bloated install of vista : P Post the win7 video. And same ssd?
my pc boots in 20 secs.. and my HDD is 5600 rpm.. 4gigs of ram ddr3 and my cpu is an athlon II x4 635 @ 2.9ghz.... . . . i would espect ur rig to be a lot faster...
Im sorry but this is stupid coz for one, how often do you restart windows on a normal day? and two, how often do you open all those internet browser sessions and a program? Ye i agree the difference is plain and simple, but in the real world how often do you make FULL use of the ssd? sadly we wouldnt see much difference. I will stick to my WD raptor, does the trick for me and i have the patience to wait a few seconds here and there lol. Thanks for the vid though
@gary63693 It is not just the bootup that is faster, it is every piece of software you start (located on the SSD) Your computer will be more responsive overall. I do have 20+ tabs open all the time in firefox, i like to use it that way, with normal harddisk that would be much slower to start.
If you have some spare RAM in your machine, you should try using a RAMdisk for your temporary internet files to enjoy the fast browsing experience like an SSD.
@AJ83x um...a RamDisk would without doubt destroy a SSD. With ram we are talking 2000MB/s+ (thats only ddr2) read/write. shame its only real use as you say is just internet temp files and possibly if you're video editing or anything with a lot of i/o power needed.
@gary63693 That's the whole point: I used to keep my computer ON 24/7 because hibernation didn't work always and booting up when needed to do something quickly was a pain in the ass. With G.Skill 120 GB drive, the booting is a snap, and launching program(s) which haven't been cached yet start fast anyway. Also, Windows "cheats" a little bit, sure it gives you the explorer view and desktop, but it's still churning in the background loading shit & doesn't respond very well.
@gary63693 SSD does everything faster. uses less power. no chance of mechanical failure. WHICH RAPTORS are NOTORIOUS for. fact is. you having a raptor is moronic as the gain from 7200 rpm vs 10000 rpm isnt much at all. oh then there is the fact SSD do not defragment. produce less heat which in turn helps to allow more overclocking of the CPU. i could go on and on into more detail but then i dont feel like giving you IT lessons...
@atekido Gee thats funny, you act your well educated but one thing i pick you up on is the my raptor HD has lasted me about 4 years without any trouble whatsoever..... FACT!
So the reason why someone should upgrade to a SSD is coz they can overclock? Oh my! STFU!
lol. With Win7, I booted in 45 seconds using: Core i5 stock speed, 4gb ddr3 ram, hitachi 7200 1tb.
(I'm now at 1.5x overclock on my i5, 8gb ddr3, and on a SSD. Not sure of the boot speed now. It's fast enough I never really think about timing it. :p )
wow more than a minute faster...impressive. I just ordered the OCZ agility 60gb and it should come tommorrow or at least by sunday. problem is im waiting on a replacement processor too and i don't even know if my computer will work after that:/
Cenot4ph does not know what he's talking about. Even SSD vendors suggest you never defragging. It doesn't matter if the SSD is fragmented, seek times are still instant. Windows 7 already cleans and optimizes upon file deletion through the TRIM function.
I am wonderıng about one thıng that, ı ve core ı7 860, 8GB 1600mhz ram, dual hd5870 crossfıreX, wındows 7x64 and wd velocıraptor and ı am gettıng 5.9 wındows poınt, ıts the lowest score cause the major hard dısk, ıf ı get ocz vertex, what wıll ı get?
@vernoncougar yea man know what u mean dont feel to bad no matter what platter drive you use all of them even 15k ones will max get a 5.9 in vista or 7 my dad got an crucial m225 128gig and it gets a 7.3 in windows7
@vernoncougar the windows score is not acurate....for example, i have a seagate 7200.12 500 16mb sinple plate...and get from windows score the same 5.9 you have, my e8500 stock speed gets a 6.8 and overcloak gets maximum, ( rams to )
but windows score is very limited becchmarking.....
I've got a 120GB version of the OCZ Vertex Series SSD, just got it today. Can't install it yet, it was the first piece of a new rig. But I'm looking forward too it so much I couldn't hold my excitement. You releaved some of that, thanks.
Did you upgrade to the new 1.5 firmware? I have this drive here in RAID 0 and get ridiculous speeds now. Also with the new firmware, it has GC(Garbage Collection) and TRIM(which isn't yet supported in RAID) so you get the best of both worlds...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@AJ83x: It doesn't hurt SDD lifetime at all and defragmentation is useful because of continuous reads. If the disk is fragmented heavily it still requires a seek before data is read. This fact doesn't change from regular HDD's. Continuous reads are faster both on SDD's and on regular HDD's.
It does hurt lifetime. A cell in an SSD can handle a certain amount of writes. An algorithm makes sure the writes are spread evenly among the cells during the lifetime, to make sure all the cells keep working for the longest time possible.
Also, since the seek time is 0,1ms (opposed to 10ms for HDD) there is almost no difference when you defrag a SSD. Windows 7 also disables automatic defrag when it detects you run on a SSD.
Cenot4ph -> please learn to do some research, before posting made up, theoretical nonsense. Did you know that engulfing your SSD in icewater will speed up the system because of superconductivity? ;o)
@12x8u It's not theoretical nonsense. It's in fact based on logic. And ive indeed read the fragmentation issues in SSD. It's seems the firmware itself takes care of internal defragmentation to avoid speed drops. So doing software defragmentation would most likely not even work. My theory still holds with respect to continuous reads and writes.
@Cenot4ph No, you're thinking of write amplification, which is very different from file fragmentation. Fragmentation on an SSD is irrelevant, since seek times are equal to any part of the SSD (no mechanical drive head to move).
A mechanical hard drive has no write penalty to write to free space, even if it has old data on it. An SSD does...if free space has old data, it has to read an entire block, then erase an entire block, before it can write new data to it. This is write amplification.
He was referring to the raptor of course. 2 minutes = 120 seconds. The SSD was 50 seconds. Learn to do your own research you pompous, ignorant, condescending hypocrite.
Did you know that's possibly the dumbest comment I've ever heard. To sink an electronic component in water is utterly foolish(even more so if it's not pure water). Superconductivity is currently limited to temperatures below 170 degrees kelvin (-103.15 degrees Celsius); far cooler than ice water. All you'll end up doing with ice water is damaging your SSD in exchange for slightly lower temps.
@Cenot4ph defrag on SDD is not recommended and will cut the lifespan of your SDD short AJ83x is right. Solid State Drives arent Hard Drives so dont treat them as such.
@officialbloodymayhem: SSD's take care of defragmentation themselves. So in that regard you are correct, however defragmentation still occurs and for the same reasons as regular HDD's.
ppl need to know that the raptor hdd has the same write speed as the fastest ssd but the ssd has a 35x faster read speed. considering the raptor gets fragmented has seek time and makes a high pitch hissing sound the ssd is the smarter choice. but the only current con is that ssd is often three times more expensive. a Corsair extreme 256 costs £560
making an ghost image wasn't the best because while installing windows 7, and recognizing it as an SSD, it disables defrag/ready boost and more... And did you really add typing your password into the counting? I get around 30 sec start time with same specs...
I know, reinstalling would be best. But for comparison this is best, because it is exactly the same. I did add typing in the password. If i would`ve reinstalled, i`m sure it would`ve even boot faster. But im lazy :) I`m waiting for release of win7, then i`ll reinstall. For now i`m happy as it is. (i already did turn off defrag+readyboost however, thats also better for the SSD lifetime)
Stop comparing this to your own pc`s. I already said this install was bloated, and had a bad bootup to begin with. I`m trying to show the difference the installation of a Vertex SSD made.
You may know what you download but you dont know what downloads itself. There are things that can get on your pc without you knowing so you should always have anti virus.
just goto msconfig, then on that program, go to the 'boot' tab, then check the box that is named 'No GUI boot'....evidently there was a tweak!!! Somebody went into msconfig before recording...
just goto msconfig, then on that program, go to the 'boot' tab, then check the box that is named 'No GUI boot'....evidently there was a tweak!!! Somebody went into msconfig before recording...
somethings fucked dude i have a 7200rpm 250gig hdd pentium dual core 3.0ghz oc 9800gt 4gig ram windows vista ult. and i boot in under 30secs idk i take care of my computer and dont have any startup items but still the raptor shouldn't take that long
Again, i assure you, both are standard startup. They may be out of sync 1 or 2 secs`s, but dude its not a scientific test, i`m just showing my experience with this upgrade. I`m glad i pulled out my wallet for this SSD, and i`d recommend it to anyone, especially laptop users. Since the HDD is the bottleneck of most laptops today.
I'm very disappointed.. Just got my first velociraptor 150 gig yesterday and its no quicker than my 320 gig 7200rpm sata hd. well you live and learn...guess i should have saved up for a ssd drive
the old raptors are slow the newer velocraptors are much faster but for price the wd 1tb black is a better buy because its close to same preofrmance for 100 bucks... so price per gb you cant match it.. with the raptors... Im not too impressed with ssd drives they too small I want speed with large copacity at least 500gigs.. and I want speed it will come sooner or latter..
No but.. over all the 1tb a better deal price to speed wises beats the raptor in some test but as a boot drive the velocraptor wins with ssd even faster.. (if you get a good one)
hi its not about the softeare he have he might have like 1000 program runing at startup now thats bad BUT! he copyed all the 1000 :P on both and u can see there is not def for that small ssd beast ^^
Sure the SSD is impressive, but if you are incompetent and can't set up your software correctly you will always have problems, no matter how good your hardware is.
I`m not saying the setup is optimal. It is about the difference between the SSD and the HDD. Both installations are the same (how screwed up it may be) and the SSD manages to perform despite the fact its a bloated install.
Nope, i didnt even install vista on it. I installed vista a couple of months ago on the old disk. Now i made a diskimage of the old installation, and restored that to the SSD right out of the box. No tweaks or alignment.
could you tell me what the song name is? I like it, its real chill lol, but also iv been looking for ssd vs raptor vids and yours the only one i found, I want to build a new rig but dunno if i want ssd's in raid or a few raptors in raid 0, what do you think? thanks

If i would`ve reinstalled, i`m sure it would`ve even boot faster. But im lazy :) I`m waiting for release of win7, then i`ll reinstall. For now i`m happy as it is. (i already did turn off defrag+readyboost however, thats also better for the SSD lifetime)

dude are you sure you got ssd and raptors, , maybe you dont even have the i7 920 , ,
my vista 64 boots alot more faster on 160gb segate sata1 hdd with 2mb cache,
bigdima3 2 years ago
Stop comparing this to your own pc`s. I already said this install was bloated, and had a bad bootup to begin with. I`m trying to show the difference the installation of a Vertex SSD made.
AJ83x 2 years ago
what if u use 2 vertexes ?! in raid 0, ,
bigdima3 2 years ago
It depends what programs you have on start up. maybe you have shit all on start up and AJ83x may have a crap load.

sorry for a mean comment,
to be honest i dont like installing programs on my pc, even though i got i7 920 i still dont have an anti virus software cuz i know what i download
bigdima3 2 years ago
You may know what you download but you dont know what downloads itself. There are things that can get on your pc without you knowing so you should always have anti virus.

yea true,

lol my hdd is faster than your ssd

just goto msconfig, then on that program, go to the 'boot' tab, then check the box that is named 'No GUI boot'....evidently there was a tweak!!! Somebody went into msconfig before recording...

somethings fucked dude i have a 7200rpm 250gig hdd pentium dual core 3.0ghz oc 9800gt 4gig ram windows vista ult. and i boot in under 30secs idk i take care of my computer and dont have any startup items but still the raptor shouldn't take that long
bobthecatkiller 2 years ago
A Core i7 machine booting into Vista in 2 minutes! That's really SLOW!!! even on a regular hdd. A defrag perhaps? Great video!

Ok. This test is so bad made so I have no words for it!
The computers starts from diffirent kind of modes, and not at the same time!
andrefantastisk 2 years ago
Again, i assure you, both are standard startup. They may be out of sync 1 or 2 secs`s, but dude its not a scientific test, i`m just showing my experience with this upgrade. I`m glad i pulled out my wallet for this SSD, and i`d recommend it to anyone, especially laptop users. Since the HDD is the bottleneck of most laptops today.

I'm very disappointed.. Just got my first velociraptor 150 gig yesterday and its no quicker than my 320 gig 7200rpm sata hd. well you live and learn...guess i should have saved up for a ssd drive
leezaal 2 years ago
erm the raptor boot is not a boot it's from sleepmode .....
roblamper 2 years ago
You are right.
TheCrazeGamer 2 years ago
I can assure you both it`s not.
AJ83x 2 years ago
the old raptors are slow the newer velocraptors are much faster but for price the wd 1tb black is a better buy because its close to same preofrmance for 100 bucks... so price per gb you cant match it.. with the raptors... Im not too impressed with ssd drives they too small I want speed with large copacity at least 500gigs.. and I want speed it will come sooner or latter..
haha48 2 years ago
You can't compare access times to throughput. 10000 RPM > 7200 RPM.
Jedi2155 2 years ago
No but.. over all the 1tb a better deal price to speed wises beats the raptor in some test but as a boot drive the velocraptor wins with ssd even faster.. (if you get a good one)

SuperTalent UltraDrive ME 128/256gb with 2,30€ per gb :)
not much worse than a raptor...

lol, the software set up is screwed up, I boot at 27sec with a WD 640 black
sonicmainliner 2 years ago
hi its not about the softeare he have he might have like 1000 program runing at startup now thats bad BUT! he copyed all the 1000 :P on both and u can see there is not def for that small ssd beast ^^
KingStivan 2 years ago
We don't see how many progs start up.
Sure the SSD is impressive, but if you are incompetent and can't set up your software correctly you will always have problems, no matter how good your hardware is.
sonicmainliner 2 years ago
I`m not saying the setup is optimal. It is about the difference between the SSD and the HDD. Both installations are the same (how screwed up it may be) and the SSD manages to perform despite the fact its a bloated install.
AJ83x 2 years ago
Hey the Raptor one came from sleep mode.
TheCrazeGamer 2 years ago
can u pls do another video with 2 raptor hdds in raid0 configuration vs. an ssd drive
Dskater101 2 years ago
Did you flash and align your Vertex before you installed Vista?
123456iambelial 2 years ago
Nope, i didnt even install vista on it. I installed vista a couple of months ago on the old disk. Now i made a diskimage of the old installation, and restored that to the SSD right out of the box. No tweaks or alignment.

Great video. I'm also curious as to what the name of the song is.
decyx2 2 years ago
could you tell me what the song name is? I like it, its real chill lol, but also iv been looking for ssd vs raptor vids and yours the only one i found, I want to build a new rig but dunno if i want ssd's in raid or a few raptors in raid 0, what do you think? thanks
