the substractionsign as you call it is called a dash when speaking about the characters, the OR-operator is referred to as a pipe. Not seldom the key for the pipe has a character similar to the pipe on it, only it is split in 2. Like 2 tiny pipes above one another.

This is especially the case when you have an old keyboard.

The easiest way to find the pipe on your keyboard is to search for the key that has both the \ and the pipe on it (if the el, i and 1 are confusing you).
