hey, sorry i couldn't make it to the cities, money's been tight, plus we had the flood to deal with so i had even less money, (out working on dikes and such rather than working, etc) Registration for the fest is soon!
two topmasts, two yardarms, two gaffs, 4 booms, 1 bowsprit, 1 martingale. All of these are much smaller. The topmasts gaffs and yardarms will be hollow.
I hope this doesn't sound like a dumb question, but how are you going to get all that weight to float in water. After you've put all the pieces together, it will weigh a lot.
eureka archimedes. Ferrocement as a building material for boats becomes lighter than wood at about 50 feet long and up. The hull is only 1 1/8" thick.
It is not a dumb question. When something is in the water it displaces the amount of water that weighs the same as the thing in the water. If the something has more area than the amount of water it displaces it floats. If the thing is smaller than the area it displaces it sinks. If this does not help, look up archimedes principle. archimedes is the guy who yelled"Eureka!"
What would stop somebody from centering the mast on a jig which can rotate it? Much like a lathe would, but with a rotating centre at one end and an elctric motor at the other, geared down of course. Then you could just turn it down with a tool mounted on a runner, I'm thinking this is too complicated already, much easier to saw chunks off :S
There are such things as pole lathes. I have more time than money, so I kept it simple. besides, it was satisfying to find out I was capable of making them myself. The locals have informed me that I am looking less and less insane.
Capt'n, you are one courageous and steadfast dude. Once your ship is ocean-bound, what are you gonna do about the hundreds (maybe thousands!!) of people who have followed your progress to the end and want to ride the waves with you and Iris? lol P.S. I'm in Montreal and we have a big port here... nudge nudge wink wink

Ok, I'm guessing the "next dozen" was a joke. :-)
What, are these masts going on? A Ketch? Are they going to replace old rotted masts on an already floating boat? Or are they going to a new boat?
(by the way: I don't know much about boats)

The next dozen refer to the booms,gaffs,topmasts,bowsprit,etc...
This will be a tops'l schooner. The lower masts will be replacing the old masts.

Using a pole-lathe for this job would not be a soulfully fulfilling, I would think.
There is something more enduring satisfaction-wise by the good Captain's method. I suspect that if we younger, then he would hand-hewn more often!
Working with hardwoods and fruitwoods, applying friction, generating fumes and sawdust is a great experience. More people should try it I think.
Grilling beer-can chicken doesn't even come close to the same feeling!

which is why the ballast and the keel weigh a lot more.

Buoyancy is a function of the weight of the displaced volume of water as compared to the weight of the vessel and all the crap you can cram in there!
Engineering schools often make the student in the "Concrete/Cement" class design and build a concrete/cement boat; then they race!
