  • I'd like to know how the fuck you can leave a pet behind, but get the rest of the family out. There is no excuse for this. No matter what anyone says.

  • @Windowpane767 Many owners had to leave there pets behind because the shelters who take them. Or did you not hear.

  • @90sfanforever I think that is a stupid excuse... nobody would leave their children behind... why their pets? No matter the disaster, if a person considered their pet family, they would not leave it behind. If Ilost everything in a disaster my dog would come with me reguardless of the situation.. if I had to live in my car, well so would he.

  • These people are wonerful! :)

They can manage to care for many dogs as individuals, as though they were each one piece of an entire best friend!

What's more, they are so determined. When they have an aggressive dog like vivian, they don't give up and say "Eh, let's try again another day." They feed and clean after her daily, inspite of her lashing out.

  • Yes, thanks to the Human Society.

  • i have a horse, and if that would happen(i live in a country where this type of things dont happen), i dont think i would be able to take him with me!D:

  • I hope that all the pets' owners can take their pets with them when the next disaster happen, they are part of the families, life hard enough for those pets and the owners to go through terrible storm then they had to be superated. I wish the government do more for all the victims during the Katrina, I still cry when I watch all the news today about all the people that had to suffer during that time. Hard to believe that was in this country to see people screaming for help for water and food.

  • @Seasonchange1

Thanks to the Humane Society of the United States all pets may now be taken to a pet only shelter with their human family.

TY hsus for all your hard work and saving so many pets from certain death in locked homes.

When the police would not let families back in to rescue them.

  • id stay with mine

  • one reason i want to be a vet, i want to help

  • I don't think I could live my home without my dog in a situation like this.

  • A lot of people with pets in the poorer parts of the city couldn't even afford to leave. Lots of people drowned while their pets survived. Also, the army shut down the city and no one could return to the city for 6 months once you evacuated without a permit which we somehow managed to get. Overall, New Orleans was seriously not prepared for Hurricane Katrina. In case you're wondering my house didn't flood and my cats are perfectly fine but got really really fat from all the food.

  • I'm from New Orleans and I had to experience Katrina. The reason why a lot of families left their pets at home is because first of all nobody expected majority of the city to flood for days. Also, traveling with pets in the car is a severe pain in the ass especially if you have a family of four or more. I had to leave my cats at home (we left 3 months supply of food and water at every level of our 3 story house in case of flooding) because the hotel we were going to didn't allow animals.

  • I dont give a damn i would never leave my dogs alone even if we have to evacuate,

  • o my god, i would hate to have to leave my pet! im so attached to them, and my cat is so old now, im afraid for him because il be so devastated when he dies...

  • One of our purpose in life is to take care of what nature has given us. Otherwise the universe will take it all from us.

  • poor pups..

  • Based on my experiences I would save a canine over a human 95% of the time. Humans rely on nobody, dogs rely on humans.

  • this is why you suck at being a human jimmy, dogs will never turn their back on you and are totally dependent on humankind and you'd just look the other way? what a waste of flesh you are.

  • @Lotusleaves

Sorry but Rex is my first priority in life to me.

Most people treat me like I have no feelings due to my disability.

I talk funny and often run into trouble with people who don't understand when I speak and many don't know how to sign.

But Rex didn't know me but still gave me a chance to love and teach him what a forever family is.

I'm just the lucky guy with the dog who loves to sit with me and just be there for me.

  • Some of your arguments are stupid. Yes, if I were forced to choose between saving a human life vs. my dog, no doubt I would try and save a fellow human being. These dogs were abandoned by their owners. I live in Florida I've gone through 5 hurricanes a few of them major. I would never leave my dogs behind. They are my family. I'd never put a human life above theirs but no way on this earth I'd leave them behind to fend for themselves. They wouldn't leave me behind.

  • First of all the government had no evacuations plans for pets.

Many people were forced to leave their pets behind.

The cops later took animals and shot them to death.

Those officers were filmed laughing while shooting and killing people's pets.

I left the region last year after Gustav for fear if another Katrina happened my current dog I rescued would end up as target pratice by some redneck hillbilly cop.

I love my dog to much to let that happen to him and yes some people are evil.

  • @happymike44

I've gone thru five hurricanes like I said. There are no evacuations plans for pets here either. None of the evacuation areas allow pets. So like I said I'd never leave my pets. N.O. is different vs. where I live there homes for hurricanes pretty much suck. Gone thru five here in Florida, newer home, dogs with me, winds of 150+ mph. Home was fine dogs were with me in bed. Never would I leave them, even if my house were built of straw they'd go wherever I go.

  • @Grrngirl.

You sound like good people to me.

Rex and I moved far away from the ocean and New Orleans last year.

But prior to that year I had extra dog food and clothes packed and water for us to drive to Texas if not further nothing in my home is worth both of us not being together.

If a storm is coming pack a bag and extra food and water for yourselves lock up the house and leave to someplace safe.

Take care and god bless from Rex and Happymike.

  • oh my thats terrible :(

  • omg if i was ina hurricane or tornado i would save my dog instead of myself. sure she is a little whiney barking brat but i still would save her instead of my self

  • its not about whether he or she is family its the bond you make with them. if you make a bond with a dog then you would think of it was your family even if it has a tail and you don't.

  • if you want to see a new show, dogs from Hawaii- go to the video, 'theDogSoup (com)

  • i think its obvious that the people had already been saved. and then the animal rescues were allowed in to get the animals weeks if not months later.

  • nobody's talking about saving a dog over a human. The humans were already gone and the dog's were left alone, stranded and starving. how is that not clear??

  • dogs are helpless, be considerate.. ur the one funny here

  • dude, the humans were already gone WEEKS AGO!! Rather than agreeing with some shit, try to get informed! It jsut sickens me when someone says something without knowing nothing about the topic!!!!!

  • You Have two arms and two legs one brain to figure out and solve it and you can ask for help!

I prefer to save the dog than your useless life

  • Wow lil harsh?

let me ask you. lets say a street dog was stranded on top of a house and your mom/dad/etc was drowning and there is a rescue boat ONLY for dogs. What kinda rubbish is that..

Everyone/human is a family of someone else... A dog is a pet. Trust me I had a dog for 14 years. She died 5 months ago.

If my brother died I wouldn't be able to eat for months.

  • If there was someone drowning they would have saved them too but no one was because people already got saved but couldn't bring there dogs

  • i want a katrina dog so bad

  • i sow this documentary today in national geographic HD! and i would like to know about vivian, did she began the dog that i think she was before katrina? did she find a home?

  • i live in louisiana

  • oooooooooo i m can t go tu the georgia

  • o.. it makes me dad..

  • Call CESAR..!!!!

  • poor dogs

  • Poor Vivian. :(

  • I wonder how many of these poor Katrina Dogs/ and cats have been put down. I am glad someone is working to save them. And Kudo's to all who have adopted one!

  • 40% of the pets left behind drowned in thier own house because it flooded and they couldn't get out. Entire barns of horses and stuff drowned too... I tried to adopt some of the rescues but they said I had to be 18 first...

  • I can't imagine what these animals went through. I mean, take a human's experience, then add having your only family escape without you, you not knowing why they wouldn't take you with them, then being left-- sometimes even trapped--in an empty house, with a limited supply of food and fresh water. You didn't know what's going on, how long it would last, if you'd ever see your beloved again, or even if you'd survive 'til nightfall. I'm so glad that such benevolent, noble people are helping them.

  • AMEN

  • 2:26 handsome dog

  • My heart goes out to all the saltwater crocodiles some New Orleaners kept in their swimming pools ...

  • OMG,=(

  • Dogs are pretty amazing. I just recently go my dogs put on my bank checks so each time i write a check, I can show people my dogs ;) A friend suggested i get it done through dogbreedbankchecks . com

  • I have a second generation Katrina dog, a Rat Terrier mix. She is an awesome, awesome dog. She won't go out in the rain :(

  • If you love dogs search "KONAS CHIPS"

  • my sister has a katrina dog named beuford.

he goes nuts whenever it rains or there is thunder. he goes running from window to window in the house barking and crying. its so sad to watch

  • poor Beuford

  • that so poor dogs and cute

  • If you love dogs search "konas chips"

  • nah because they knew it was coming and did nothing to prevent it, and blew the leveys this isnt somthing to be debated it was already done you can hide behind the people you rely on to take care of you all you want someday youll wake up but i pray that its not to late then

  • Yeah because they dumped millions of gallons of water on top of a city with their giant flying elephants

  • we have giant flying elephants??

  • Didn't you see?!

  • Annimals are awesome to survive !! Woaw

  • They're not traumatized, they've gone feral.

  • awhh

    i live in louisiana

and i was here during katriana

and it WAS the saddest thing ever

  • this makes me depressed T_T

  • i'm from L.A California, and i have 3 dogs that we are going for a walk in... 2 hours. i have some time......

  • hope you had a nice walk : )

  • aww poor doggies!! i wish i cud adopt them alll!!!!

  • omg!!!

thats the only thing i like from USA...

Here, in mexico, is much diferent, thers no fuckin culture for the pet's care...

  • This made me cry! I so want to go hug my dog right now. Poor babies. :(

  • i get hugz too? \o/

  • I don't know you, but sure. *Hugs*

  • im from gulfport, ms and i was there for katrina. it definatly had nothing to do with what race the owner was or if they were bad owners or not. people were being evacuated by bus, train, car, whatever and had to choose between their pet or not being allowed on the buses and things. it was simply and extreme situation that produced extreme results. can you blame a dog getting hit by a car on the owner not taking the dog to work? or because he was white or black? dont be arrogant.

  • if there was a hurricane or a tsunami in my country area, one thing im sure, i wouldnt leave my dog alone!i would take him with me, because he´s part of my family too!i hate people who abandon animals!

  • sure jus blame it on the black people the dog cant be traumatized by the flood n lack of food?

  • Its owners were from New Orleans, which means that the chances are they were bad owners. The dog's anger is probably from either owner abuse or just poor raising - at least, that's what I think

  • how sad, poo dogs!!!! I just hope theyre able to find their masters

  • omg i cried and only 2 movies/ videos in the WORLD have made me cry before!

  • saddddddddddddddddddddd=(

  • poor babies

  • i am a part of this orginazion and i helped bring home 300 dogs with my partner finding there families.

  • if it meant putting my life in jeopardy i still would have found a way to take my beagle with me

  • omg i have a beagle too

  • I wouldn't be able to leave my dog behind. I'd take him with me no matter what.

People who rescue animals must be the most kind-hearted people in the world <33

  • oh god... that is so sad.. i love animals so much, i can't imagine having to save them... many people tell me i should work with animals becuz i love them so much, but i couldn't do that due to things like this. I would flip out trying to save an animal and seeing it die on me.. god bless these people!

  • fisher1972-you should be shot, your a waste of human flesh.

  • We have a lot of these animals (cats and dogs) in our shelters here in Canada.

  • stupid hurricane katrina

  • poor dogs i would of taken my animals no matter what :)

  • That is the saddest thing ever, ): Why couldn't the dogs be taken with them?? Im glad most of them got back to their families though

  • aww...that's so incredibly sad...just imagine your own dog or cat having to be left behind...feeling like their family left them :( but it wasn't even their choice...OMG that's sooo sad poor dogs. i'm glad that most of them were returned to their owners

  • lol

  • you must be a gook?

  • I really couldnt give a shit less about humans, but I do feel horrible for those animals. Hope they save each and every one of em.

  • i love how people contribute to saving animals in need

  • Poor doggies... ; (

  • exelient

  • hey!!! one of those dogz... is my dawg! he was in katrina and he was the 1 in the boat... his names Jack now...OMG

  • you shouldnt have left him.

  • why do i feel more sorry for dogs than people?.. is it just me or is it a sense of helplessness the dogs possess in a situation like this?

  • a normal person would feel sorry for the helpless animals.

but feeling more sorry for them than for humans is plain wrong.

  • Some humans like dogs more than people. That's their prerogative.

  • lol why should dogs be more inferior than humans?

  • No one said they are inferior. The guy said feeling MORE sorry for animals is wrong. I agree. Its okay to feel sorry on the same level but MORE sorry seriously is a little wrong...

  • 喜欢看动物世界!

  • dont be such a cunt!

  • Ok. Thanks for the warning.

  • Great video! Congrats! *****X10^6!

  • bullshit

dog-eaters hang them slowly to make them suffer, beleiving adrenaline cures impotency

anyone who does that knowingly for their little willies is not capable of "feeling bad" ... they are sociopaths

  • I would not move even one centimeter if my dog doesn't go with me. I can not leave him there. He comes with me or I die with him. And yes, I call my dog "him", because for me is more than just "it".

  • If I will think like you, I should eat human too, because the muscles are pure carbs and proteins. And we don't eat each other.

  • I feel so sorry for the ppl and animals after Katrina hit. Only thing that bothers me is why the govt would let ppl live in sub-level areas and not build homes in areas that are sustainable with such catastrophes. If they CAN'T do this for the people they should at least be there ASAP when a disaster occurs!

  • What a ignorant motherfucker.

Like the government have enough money to make EVERYONE live in land with a magickal force that protects you from hurricane and earthquakes.

Get your imagination out of the real word.

Try to fit 300,000,000 people in a "safe" city.

  • Japan.

  • Long and traumatic? Its a dog i know it has feelings but. It was so hostile probaly because it was in a cage after a massive change in its life not having its owners and its same surrondings. Give it a good home and a month and the dog will settle down.

  • Someone, lines below, has ventilated the idea of sending these dogs to Africa in order to soothe the widespread famine there. This seems quite an absurd thing. Think of the way your government was quick to aid BANKERS. Meanwhile, New Orleans was not a speck of a matter to consider for them, nor was it its own people... Why, then, should the dogs pay the bill? Remember Saint Francis of Assisi... No matter your faith!

  • watch EARTHLINGS!!! the gov't, society and the world dont give a sh*t about animals. It's a pretty good documentary!!! you'll enjoy it!!!

  • Thank you very much for your kind suggestion. Be sure, I will watch.

  • snoopy here?

ahah,so clever & brave dogs, a friend of human beings

  • whoopy

  • Not a bad idea..

  • aww i hope it finds a good owner who wud give it luv nd care :(

  • Que Dios bendiga a todos los seres humanos que son capaces de ayudar a un animal.

  • Sorry. I love dogs, but there are so many that need help and you are wasting your time on a dog that should be put out of it's misery.

  • poor.... i'm sorry about that

i love animals you know espcecially dog

they are so cute i love dog better than cat

  • Pets can be so great, they show you a lot of love (cats, dogs) when you treat them right

  • "dog inside" :(

  • I know isn't that so sad???Brass Shackles

  • this will b true after u die,

  • it's good to know that there are many people able to actions like that.good look.sincerely,it breaks my heart.

  • My name is Vivian!!! go "best friends!" go "dog town!" may you live forever!

  • When you go some where else from the hurricain you dont leave your poor animals their!!!!!

  • Well they kinda have no choice really because they have to get out as soon as possible.

  • you bitch.

  • Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..... Ecsquse me?????

  • God Bless you

  • It's nice to know that some people care about our little friends. A couple of months ago I started feeding a starving stray dog (I can't take her in since I have three pets and little space). All I got from the neighbours was flames and sarcasm. They didn't find the sight of an emaciated dog insulting. But slowly some of them have begun to give it food. I find this encouraging and hopeful, not just for the dog's but for their sake as well.

  • Breaks my heart... as a dog breeder I take the TIME to find the best homes that I can for my puppies! That means I turn away buyers that could prove potential threatening to the dog. How you handle a personality says everything, the answer is not 'kill the dog', I appreciate what Dog Town is doing for Vivian, perhaps now some dogs will be given a second chance when it is the owners not the dog that created the dangerous situation! Blessings... ENTICIA

  • you just know those katrina dogs have eaten 3 old katrina ladys each...minimum.

  • I'm an ardent supporter of Best Friends. I hope Nat Geo will continue the series "Dog Town," and will consider future episodes not only about the Kanab sanctuary but about the other work done by the group. When other major groups advocate killing animals or breeds of animals, Best Friends is always the strongest advocate for them.

  • aweh :(

  • will someone please watch the movie EARTHLINGS!!!

  • no way, your on your own

  • Aww, hope all the dogs get adopted.

  • yeah that's a second chance

  • poor dogs =(

  • this is just sad...there is no excuse to leave behind your dogs!!!pathetic people like this shouldnt be allowed to own dogs!

i dont want to hear any bullshit about hurricane katrina...its a hurricane they had warning!!!

  • (5)*****

  • um, no. dogs shouldnt die just because there are too many of them. Theres too many people here in the us,.. why dont U volunteer and die?? yah didnt think so.

  • Stupid.

  • I love my little dog, can't stand somebody talking this kind of shit!

  • Poor doggy, my doggy is lucky, it hump me and it on my account

  • my dog of eleven years is like this to other people and other dogs. but he is a good dog to me. so i keep him around and away from others.

    peace....

  • it's the owners fault that dogs cant behave around other people.

  • thanks for judging me!!! if i could only be so good and saintly as ironchopsticks!!!!!

    peace.....

  • A wonderful video!!
