I know a circassian friend in Istanbul. Whenever she faces something scary she says Viy da Vish. After reading Gogol's story many years later I have always wondered if there is any correlation?

No, theres no correlation here. The Russian VIY (VIzhu, VIdet' ) is relative to VIzual, VIdeo and means "the one who sees", kind of a seer.
Your "Viy da Vish" must be in some other language, not relative to Russian.
