I've listened to and studied Jeff Lorber for years. One of the funkiest cats ever to grace a keyboard! Brian Bromberg is just laying down the coldest groove here! Anyone can play a 2 chord song, it takes masters like these though to inject feel and enough variance to keep you listening after 5 minutes!
It just seems playing at a book store in Portland is a little beneath them though. Even though I know it's to promote Jeff''s CD
Well, we had a "guest guitarist" come up on stage with us, and he basically he and the other guitarist ate up about 15 minutes of the classes time soloing over the song. This class was set up for a certain amount of people to play in 1 1/2 hours, and we ended up kind of screwing the last group that came after us.
After that, the teacher declared "no more 2 chord jams". When he got a few boos and hisses, he said "maybe in 15 years"
I am not in that class anymore, but I doubt he would let us play that anyways. True, it is funk, but he would only really let us play funk tunes that hand jazz roots. Class was fun while it lasted though!
I Love the: groove, the exploration( chord subs, alternate scale work)the sound, love the blues in it, love the communication, I love how Lorber delays the tempo a quarter note or two, plays with the ear a bit, sometimes, love the players... keep it rollin!
You kidding, right? Brian Bromberg is one of the best there is. Unfortunately, he has never had any recording breakthroughs but that's due to poor management, not his playing. Anyway, he is as much in demand as Peter Erskine or Michael Brecker (was).
Hey, I was really kinda joking. I have followed him for a while now and enjoyed his column in Keyboard. However, I would like to see some of these great artists perform at schools and similar venues to promote good music and jazz. This had to be a thrill.
thanks for posting this video.. its cool.. thanks again and I hope you can post more of this kind of things.... it really help us in viewing these great artists around the world..

Brian Bromberg is a well known double bas player?? where he from?
hermandrum 4 years ago
Originally from Arizona. He plays quite a bit. Not exactly a traditional jazz style, but it is still extremely good.
