I've always admired the body of work that Mr. Simon has done...I'm so proud of him that he won the first Gershwin Award. (You can buy the entire concert on DVD...it's truly beautiful.) I love the way he made this song his own. Sheer genius.
if you watched this with closed captions the lyrics were the same as always, but paul didn't sing them that way.some say he messed up; some say he changed the words up.
@StimpsonJay But the best songwriter being paul simon and the best singer being wilson,in the case(after all is not art garfunkel singing),of course...well,while wilson was writing about fun, fun, fun and surfer girls simon was writing about the sound of the silence and about the wednesday in the 3.a.m...and the melodies, well, not as rich in arrangment as brian´s,but much more deeper
This brings back the time when I was seventeen in so many ways. I still feel as if I am still standing at the seashore, listen to that song and have HIM in my heart :) Its so long ago...
What a marvelous rendition and the liberties he takes are actually quite nice. Sometimes one doesn't want to just hear a by the numbers cover. And his voice? My how it has aged like wine. In fact he hits the higher register notes better than he did in many respects with S & G. Of course those were usually left for Garfunkel but the way Simon transitions vocal registers on this clip is quite stunning and very fluid. Quite nice!
This blows my mind every time I listen to it

@StimpsonJay That statement would still be true if the roles were reversed. Both absolutely brilliant singer/songwriters.

Paul Simon has one of the best male pop voices of the 20th and 21st century. His Rhythm of the saints concert in Melbourne in 1992 was mind blowing.

Touching performance. So elegantly stripped down in sound he could have been on the stage naked and no one would have noticed.
