Ms. expertvillage has some great tips here, but if I may, as an experienced public speaker, and social scientist, add to her insight, and simply ask you to remember to always remain on point, to be organic, not clinical, to treat an audience of any size as though it were merely a small gathering of your friends whom you are ABSOLUTELY convinced MUST be moved toward YOUR particular perspective. You MUST always maintain controlled emotion, and pure conviction at ALL times, and maintain mastery. :)

I am not sure if leaning comfortably on the podium is a bad thing - yes, if you camp there for the entire speech, it is... but if you go around and back to the podium and lean, it shows some authority over the audience, as if "I can lean on the podium and this stage is mine".

Why is she so upset? It looks like she's been to many Mafia public speaking events. The only speakers who hide behind a tree are those avoiding being seen by police who suddenly walk in. Same thing - only Mafia bosses lean and hold on to the podium and say "YOu talkin to me?" and same thing with nervous pacing - - and smoking a cigarette - - planning their next hit.

When I delivered a presentaion in the State Bank of Pakistan I didn't use the pdium....There were a table for exetives next to that..so I had to come down the 2 feet high platform
