But would Esther's and Mr. Jaundice's marriage be legal though? I know they are not blood related but it sounds a bit incestuous to me. I can't imagine their relationship ever being more than platonic.
@lyziette There wasn't anything illegal about a man marrying his ward, even if he'd brought her up since childhood. Some even saw it as ideal. 'Twas a different time.
I understand that some might find Esther's charachter a bit "too" good and virtuous, the ideal victorian woman, but i don't think she's so one dimensional. Considering her childhood -hearing from her aunt that she's a mistake, a burden to everyone- it's no wonder she has low self esteem and clings on to the first person (Jandyce) who cared for her and can't accept easily that anyone (Woodcourt) could truly love her.
@Wytchwing So true. I would have liked to see more of Rick and Adam for example. I hate Rick but they are interesting characters. And I adore the lady with the birds.I think she's been my favorite character up until now.
Poor Richard, my grandpa had tuberculosis, too. And poor Esther! I personally find her to be very interesting, she's one of my favorite characters. I still hope she and Woodcourt find a way to be together, somehow.
Esther really should have given Woodcourt a hint that she was already engaged before it came to the proposal. There are certainly ways to make things known discreetly.
Personally, Esther has come to be my favorite character. I think she is VERY interesting. :^)
poor dear esther. too good for her own good at times but always the epitome of Victorian womanhood: modest,, discreet and virtuous. And yes, a little boring.

As douchebaggy as this sounds, the best characters in this book/film, in my mind are Lady Deadlock and Tulkinghorn. Nothing like a good villain

I actually find Esther very interesting. I think anyone would be lucky to have such a friend like her; I know I never have.
