Great. Time to call feminists on their ridiculous unapologetic sexism. You tell them that because apparently, we guys have too much "privilege" to be allowed to say anything about equality.(the MRM makes some great points btw)
Again, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry on behalf of all the males of all species who ever did anything bad. Doesn't matter how mild or "zero bad" it actually was, the WOMAN'S FEELINGS are what truly counts, always and I apologize. Sorry.
As much as I like anti-feminism, but your rant had to much attacks on person, and to little on her actual facts and/or arguments. That combined with calling her a "stupid bitch" just makes you sound like another trash-talking woman. You can refute someones worldview without swearing, trash-talking and attacks on person.
@Pikabolch3 No you cant. Swearing and not using arguments just shows you dont actually have anything behind your words, just idiocy. Somewhat like you.
Thank you for this video. Becky's problem is that she doesn't recognize her own privilege. Women have the privilege that they can accuse any man of doing them wrong, and most people will automatically believe them. It's not necessarily a bad thing. Accusation of rape or battery are worthy of serious consideration. Becky enjoys the privilege of calling ANYONE a misogynist whenever it suits her purpose, and she got caught abusing that privilege. She is now effectively the girl who cried wolf.
I am a skeptic, both philosophical and scientific, and Rebecca Watson is one in name only. She, like Shermer, uses skepticism as a niche market to push an ideology.
As a gay man working for lambda legal I got in to a huge debate with her claiming that women in America are in the same boat withthe LGBT community . Telling her I was lacking `1700 rights, state and federal. I asked her what rights is she lacking , she sniped, at me with " You are a sexist pig" LOL
"Scientist or idiot"? Are people under the impression that Rebecca Watson is a scientist? Because she isn't. She has no background in science. Her degree is in advertising.
Also, you say that being hit on is not the same as FGM. I agree. I don't think RW ever implied those two were the same either, or even referred to FGM at all regarding the elevator story. Dawkins and others brought it into the conversation. Again, not stating my opinion on it, just pointing out what was/wasn't said.
My comment has nothing to do with opinions on RW or her arguments. Just a point of fact: The calendar she and other skepchicks posed for was not for personal profit. It was a fundraiser for a secular activist group. All proceeds were used to send contest applicants to the James Randi Educational Foundation's TAM event, who could not otherwise afford to go.
@maddoxsarahe I don't think the point was about who profited from the calendar, the point was about her being in it and her seeming fear of being objectified by others, when she seems OK to objectify herself, double standards and hypocrisy.
Excuse me but finding an ideolog among skeptics doesn't make skepticism bullshit. This is the 'guilt by association' fallacy. Actually it goes right along with the tenants of skepticism that no one is immune from this tendency. We are hard-wired by evolution to get 'hooked on an idea' and blinded to our bias. What you are doing with this video is exactly what skepticism prescribes (well, except not really providing us with much evidence for your opinions other than bald assertions).
@vaytw I didn't mean to say all skeptics are full of crap, just this one for proclaiming so loudly to be part of a group that welcomes rationality and free thinking and clearly not following her own advice. I had more points but the video was growing rather long... I could write this in the form of a fully researched academic article if anyone would read such a thing. For the record, I think my assertions have a full head o' hair, or at worst a receding hair line :)
@blastedgoat That's cool. And I don't necessarily disagree with what you're saying about Watson. I listen to SGU, so I'm aware of the whole 'controversy' and basically support Dawkins. I just mean if you're going to lambast someone so badly, you should include a lot of representative quotes by that person to demonstrate your points, but in my recollection you have only one Watson quote here. And LOL about the "full head o' hair, or at worst a receding hair line".
You hit the nail on the about how her women's advocacy is limited to promoting one female, HERSELF!
Skepticism has become synonymous with atheism. Now the door is wide-open for quasi-religious ideology, including feminism. She has successfully exploited this group of female-deprived nerds and spoon-fed them her version of feminism. Pissing people off yields 10x the attention that inspiring or elevating humanity does. Hypocrisy is very effective for accomplishing this goal.
Your conclusion that "Skepticism is BS" is ironically delicious. RW is one of the key players in the "Skeptical Movement" who's stated mission is to promote "critical-thinking". In a nutshell, CT is described as evaluating the evidence before forming a conclusion. Ironic that you've done just that and concluded that skepticism is bullshit. LOL
The movement was desperate for female members, so they put up with her crap.
@Laursaurus I hope people evaluate things on their own. I don't have a problem with most skeptics out there as long as they follow their own rules. But thank you so much for calling me awesome :D I don't get that everyday lol I will call people out on things when I feel I have a good reason. I hate stupid women, they make the rest of us look bad. Stupid and quiet women I will leave alone but anyone claiming to "champion science" because they married a scientist is so missing the point :D
Having been a lurker for a long time in the skeptic community, watching it grow and evolve, in some cases actually undergo negative evolution, I can say that from the first day I experienced Watson I have had some negative feelings which I couldn't really put my finger on, but would not give up on her. Later, as Watson came out as the feminist nutjob she is, my suspicions seemed warranted. When the elevator nonsense descended my mind was finally made up. She does not deserve my respect.
Rebecca has never offered anything to the community other than snark and lame attempts at humor. To much attention whoring. She's a trick short of being a one-trick pony.
To this day I cannot fathom why she receives such an elevated position within the skeptic/atheist communities... though it might have something to do with the way she exploited her sexuality in the early days.
Be warned; you will no doubt be labeled "jealous" and/or a "gender-traitor".
@qarnos yes, snark and lame, you describe her humor perfectly! I'm starting to get backlash for this video a bit now but luckily those who actually listen to the words coming out of this girl's mouth found me first! I'm so jealous of Rebecca and anyone who makes a good living being a moron. I would love that work, it seems so much easier than what I'm doing now :)
Political animal. Stranger to the truth. No substance. At two conferences I attended she gave 'talks' with minimal preparation & no referenced material. "This is true because I say it is so - believe me." She was drunk for the first one & hung over for the other. In effect myself & the rest of the audience paid her to sneer, ramble on & get pissed. She has been 'busking it' for a long time & it's getting old.
{applause}. Thank you for that. Perfect summation of a very selfish, clueless, spoiled, entitled and privileged brat. The Pudgy Pink Princess in a nutshell.
You're doing it wrong. Has Watson failed to teach you how to be a proper woman yet? First, you make a long series of claims, and then cry sexism if people disagree.
@blastedgoat sorry, no. I wasn't. It ruins the gay angle I'm using to get women to trust me. Ask Watson - practically every man in existence wants to screw her. She goes down a list at every 'lecture' she gives.
I think for any speaker (male or female) at these events, we should be able to question just what it is that distinguishes them from the audience such that they are the ones talking rather than listening.
Whenever I see RW speak, I often think that surely there must be members of the audience who are more academically qualified, more interesting and more knowledgeable, and who should be speaking in her place. I personally know MANY women who should be speaking but are not even considered.
@Slossius1983 I know! Normally, I wouldn't care if this girl just had a podcast and said some of this stuff but colleges PAY her? I don't know how much they pay but she travels and represents Americans and women, a sad day for all!
I agree with nearly every point, for what that is worth.
But it *is* important. Watson is single-handedly destroying bot the Skeptical movement, the Atheist movement and the Feminist movement in the same stroke.
If the bozos who hire her for talks do not wake up soon, these important movements will become like the CFI, which is already in the gutter, gasping for credibility.
@MichaelKingsfordGray Totally! Even if I don't normally associate myself with these movements I feel they should be fairly represented. I can usually get behind things they stand for but Rebecca is so silly I can't take her seriously. It's almost as if she's there as a joke. Could that be it? Thanks for your input. Hopefully, real members of these communities wake up and take the wheel from this wild woman before she drives them off a cliff!
Decent video. Watson gets a lot of undeserved abuse but she does cover a large streak of pettiness with a thick veneer of self righteousness which can get pretty damn obnoxious.
@ejak1991 so, people who are petty, vindictive and self-righteous enough to exploit a power imbalance to silence dissent who get called out on it doing so don't deserve it? Saying someone is a lying, arrogant, ill-educated hack whose only claim to being known is that she's able to suck up to people who are known for merit isn't abuse. Or, if it is, then her 'christians stop saying stupid things . . . you executed Galileo' is egregious. (But no one call her on it - undeserved and all)
Great. Time to call feminists on their ridiculous unapologetic sexism. You tell them that because apparently, we guys have too much "privilege" to be allowed to say anything about equality.(the MRM makes some great points btw)
