Very interesting to see this in comparison to what I saw in Japan this summer. One could say the Japanese people lost more because they had so much more to lose (cars, appliances, stuff). While recognizing their loss, it's important to remember all the people who start out with so little.
When I ask people to donate to disaster relief I encourage a general donation that the NGO can use anywhere rather than donating to a specific location. The next disaster is just around the corner, anywhere.
