Please disregard my last post about the PT wood, I just saw the video previous to this one where you talked about it briefly. Even still, great videos! Thanks again!
@rwoodsr79 No problem. The paint I use is an outdoor wood paint I got from Lowes or HomeDepot. I can't remember which. But it is nothing special. I just chose a color off the wall that would match similar to the brick.
I've been wanting to start a garden in my backyard since we bought our house last year, but I've always been concerned about what type of wood to use for the beds. It looks like you're using pressure treated wood. Is that safe? Sounds silly to ask since you ARE using it. But I've read several "horror" stories about the chemicals in PT wood for vegetable gardens. Also, are you using a special kind of red paint or is it purely decorative? Thanks! Great videos by the way!
That looks a lot better and should give you more manageable planting area. It's a fun time of the year for a gardener... Lots of enthusiasm and neat ideas.
Oh, how my heart leaped when I saw those new beds and... how I laughed when I saw the four stakes!!! You're doomed, doomed I tell you, so you might as well put the next dozen new beds in now.
I'm not sure if you want to get the weed tarps kinda stuff under your bed. Tomatoes roots like to go deeper than the the height of the bed. Besides, all the weed that you get in the bed comes there via the wind. So the weedplastic doesn't help at all.
@JustFresh099 The weed blocker actually works really well for me. I've used it all around my house for my normal garden beds and you don't have to dig up or try to kill the bermuda which is a real pain. You just lay it down and the grass doesn't grow through. So it absolutely works for me.
Sure it works for the grass coming up from underneath. But the tomatoes roots from above don't go through the plastic aswell. Weak root systems means weak plants. That's the issue I'm worried about.
@JustFresh099 . Well all of my beds from last year have the same stuff in place and they grew plenty of tomatoes and peppers. I have the videos to prove it. Plus the roots would stop when they hit the hard GA clay anyways. With the raised bed or the squarefoot method you don't have to have the roots shoot down that far.
"if you are doing math ... In a normal way" LOL. If you like potatoe's maybe add one bed on top of another bed and add the potatoes as far down as you can in the bed. You will get huge potatoes. I have 4 foot high by 12foot infront of my house. I will be puting my potatoes in thoughs beds this summer. I just bought some ghost pepper seeds I dont think I will be able to grow them out side it takes about 8 months to grow them, If you like hot hot hot peppers try to get your hands on some of these
@crewlla Always glad when my lack of thinking turn funny :). I have followed some folks who did potatoes and I really don't eat a ton to try and grow them......at least yet that is. I'm actually putting in my last/new 2x6 bed. I decided to add that last one I mentioned maybe doing. I am going to give onions a whirl. Have you grown those? I read I can plant them now about 6 weeks before the last frost date since they are pretty tolerant to cool/cold.
@14dollarz since I live in alberta canada it is pretty easy to grow onions, potatoes and most of the cool (winter crops) I have a problem with cucumbers, hot peppers, pumkin, mellons and most of the vegies and fruits that have to have warm temps to grow. We have no problem with rashberries, strawberries, blackberries, rhubarb and sweet peas. However, I still try every year to see if I can grow things that normally dont grow here. Our zone is 3a. Some areas In bc have zone 8
@crewlla Gotcha. I tried onions my first year but they didn't grow, mostly because I think they got shaded out by my zucchini and I didn't know they would get that big. I'm in zone 8 i think and the peppers grow like crazy here along with cucumbers. Though it seems our fall and spring are too short to try some cooler weather stuff like lettuce.
@crewlla I also am going to post a video here shortly regarding onion questions. You inspired me to ask around. Thanks! Oh and I'm also showing off my last new bed.
@destroyahdes The liner works great. Especially for bermuda which is such a pain to dig up and try to kill. So smothering it with something it can't grow through seems to work great.
Your new beds look great!!! I watched all of your gardening videos and they have truely been inspirational to me and now I'm starting my own. So check out my videos and let me know what you think. Goodluck with your gardening season!!!
looks good jason! Is it just me, or is the lawn in your back yard getting smaller?LOL. Backyard gardening is so addictive, i think someone needs to form some sort of support group for us poor souls!
Looks good. Happy growing!

Like your idea with the larger bed and I think you should add another one just so you can keep everything close together and easy to manage.

I like the idea of the liner underneath. I think my beds have one more year in them before I need to rebuild them. This is coming along great.
