For those wondering about the combat, play the game on the hardest difficulty (I did on my FIRST playthrough). Every hit hurts you, and you don't even get spider-sense warnings to counter.
The combat is not repetitive and it's not mindless. What you're saying is exactly the same with the Devil May Cry series 'cause pretty much every standard enemy in that game can be defeated by mashing "stinger", but it rewards people for being stylish and doing different variations of attacks and it's the same with Arkham Asylum. Love the review Phil. But I gotta admit the gripe you have about the combat isn't exactly repetitive as you think. The way the game was designed is for the combat to have a flow to it. In a combat scene you are actually able to use many different tactics to defeat your enemies with a NEVER ENDING combo. There are special attacks if your combo is high enough. Just FYI. my only gripe on it was that id rather have a few head to head fights with bosses rather than just fighting henchmen, then animation attack on boss, more henchmen. Kinda wish they set up that one part where clayface pretends to be a guard, you let him out then you have to fight him straight up.

If you smash the button you get a poor score and it not look great. You can get variation bonuses (using the batarang, batlaw, etc, etc...), you must get a perfect timing in the hit... Actually I freaking love the combat system, it's extremely fun, and not that simple (play the challenges if you don't believe me)
Phil I think that they should of put in a chase scene with Kiler Croc against the batmobile then he destroys it (instead of the henchmen) and you do a battle against him using the batclaw to trip him. Just my opinion.
The first big boss, your fight him then scape, but surprise he follows your, so you crash the batmovil on it. (batmovil is destroyed and te boss is defeated)

My two cents...the game played out like the true to comics stuff does. Batman doesn't really fight if he can figure out another way. So...fighting would have been a last resort (even though he is a blackbelt). The bosses to me were fine...the only thing i wanna say to your Killer Croc comment is, he was the only boss not released...so of course he'd have to have his collar on. And second of all...he's huge more brawn that brains...of course he's not smart enough to stealth fight Batman.

I wonder if DSP tried the game on hard mode. There are no blue indicators when the badguys are about to hit you which I found made the combat a lot more fun. Also the throw and the instant takedowns are sort of like super moves =P. But then again I don't play very many different games so to me the combat in this game was really fun.
I totally agree with you about the final boss battle with joker (aka super shredder)lol....I was really hoping to fight him head on but instead you have to fight more of his goons. It was way to easy IMO. Poison Ivy was my favorite boss in this game by far....great review Phil
I love this game, i got every riddle and tape, even solved the last spirit of arkham w/e. Let me tell you if you use a strategy guide for this game, then it'll turn right into a beat them up. the real fun for this game is solving everything in here. Plus hard mode, no more flashing to tell u to counter. Seems like nothing at first, until you die, in the first 2 rounds of mobs.

I really, really really enjoyed this game, and I hope they'll do a sequal with more of the villains they didn't actually have (Two Face, Mr. Freeze, maybe an actual fight with the Riddler, and possibly bringing back Croc for some better fights or something).
It seems that there's a lot of possibilities in a sequal, and if there's gonna be one, I can't wait. Bottom line: If you like Batman, go get it.

When I first saw Phil's demo walkthrough I thought he was a total tool with his commentary, but hey, this is a really well-done review (although a bit long). Good on you.
I love ya videos phil but the comment about the combat all the tools and stuff you get, you can use all of em and they are useful (so there is variety) especially when your wanting to chain together 40+ combos
and it isn't complicated but as the same time it sorta is cause you do need to concentrate quite a bit and on the harder difficulty you do not button mash. You need to know what enemy your going for with each square button atack (ps3) and all the rest.

Mark Hamill is THE best Joker voice IMO. Loved him. And im glad we dont have Christian "grumble grumble" Bale as the voice.
Unfortunatly, the only part of this game i didn't like was the Boss battles, thankfully being so few in the game it DOES NOT bother you.
The Riddler challenges i found to be FUN to find, i couldn't believe i enjoyed them.
The combat seems bery basic and im very against mashers but i found the Batman AA combat very enjoyable.
I can also see myself playing this alot!

i give this game a 9 because i kind of agree, the killer croc fight wasnt what i expected, although they wanted to keep it realistic because lets be honest, batman cant win in a fist fight so they needed to do something other then that, but they should have had something better then blowing up the floor, also at the end of the game fighting the super joker, i think it would have been awesome if batman got injected with the shit the joker got injected with and they both got all huge and

The combat is awesome and the point of it is to keep the flow going which frankly you didin't by mashing the strike button and counter.

I really, really really enjoyed this game, and I hope they'll do a sequal with more of the villains they didn't actually have (Two Face, Mr. Freeze, maybe an actual fight with the Riddler, and possibly bringing back Croc for some better fights or something).
It seems that there's a lot of possibilities in a sequal, and if there's gonna be one, I can't wait. Bottom line: If you like Batman, go get it.

you play inside the prison everywhere inside it so from that place to the mansion and everywhere else this game is probably the best superhero game so far hands down

I love ya videos phil but the comment about the combat all the tools and stuff you get, you can use all of em and they are useful (so there is variety) especially when your wanting to chain together 40+ combos
and it isn't complicated but as the same time it sorta is cause you do need to concentrate quite a bit and on the harder difficulty you do not button mash. You need to know what enemy your going for with each square button atack (ps3) and all the rest.
Besides that, good review
