I prefer his more manly or somber voice over shouting. Come down in time aka stutter down in time is his best singing, best everything. Elton seems like a likable guy and is very charitable but he doesn't inhabit my soul like Neil Young or the Replacements. Studio version moves along a little faster if I remember and was better.. this is still good.

If I hadn't seen the makers mark on the side facade, I would have sworn that was a Steinway he was playing. His tuner must have been a master to make a cheap piece of junk sound like that. It's a miracle! The middle and upper registers were sweet, and as pure as you could dream for. The lower ones were kind of muddled. But all in all ....well what can I say more.

I love how his voice becomes deeper, raspier, and darker as he ages. It sounds and feels as though there is so much more soul and life in it than there ever was. He is like a fine wine, he just gets better with age ♥
He's singing this an octave lower than he used to. His tonal quality really improved over the years even though he's always had a great voice. I always laugh when George Michael gets on stage with him. Michael kind of sounds OK by himself, but he should be embarrassed to sing next to Reg. What a difference in vocals.
This is in the exact same key (c-major) as the '72 live recording and the album version. It is not lower at all. His voice does have a darker character though. Agree on the George Michael thing though:-)

@wilmil7545 No he's not. It's the same note. The someone can have a deeper sounding voice but still sing high notes, just as someone with a high voice can sing low notes and sound high.
A good example of this is Meatloaf - he sings insanely high notes for a man but because his voice sounds deep, it seems that he's singing lower notes than he really is but in actual fact he's singing higher than most men will ever be able to reach.

I much prefer his voice now than his voice as a younger man. I think it has much more character and seems to bring out the soulful side that is in much of his music.
I prefer his younger voice but I hear what your saying; as he's gotten older he seems to sing with something more bordering on conviction or personal experience. A good way for a voice to age, to sing with wisdom you know?

Didn't he have some kind of growth in his throat or on his vocal chords in the mid-80's that changed his voice? If I remember correctly, his voice changed suddenly and I thought some type of operation was the reason.

I liked him better when he was younger. Hes just not as good any more. Also, i never knew he had drug or alcahol problems. Poor guy missed a few steps over the years in my ears, but thats just me.
Well after all the hard drugs, drinking for so long, smoking and bulimia, you can't exactly not expect his voice to change. In my eyes, he's lucky to still be singing at all.
But I'm a fan of his new and old stuff and like his voice just the same. ow he can hit lower notes while once he could hit the high ones. Not a bad trade.

I love how his voice becomes deeper, raspier, and darker as he ages. It sounds and feels as though there is so much more soul and life in it than there ever was. He is like a fine wine, he just gets better with age ♥

He's singing this an octave lower than he used to. His tonal quality really improved over the years even though he's always had a great voice. I always laugh when George Michael gets on stage with him. Michael kind of sounds OK by himself, but he should be embarrassed to sing next to Reg. What a difference in vocals.

This is in the exact same key (c-major) as the '72 live recording and the album version. It is not lower at all. His voice does have a darker character though. Agree on the George Michael thing though:-)

@maxb162 is right. I think it's called lowering a half step or a whole step, however, this is in C just like the original.

@TheTomReid sure, hes stinging the same notes, but if hes singing it deeper ten he's playing it one [or two] octaves lower. for instance, instead of singing f4, hes singing f3. same note, only lower.

@wilmil7545 No he's not. It's the same note. The someone can have a deeper sounding voice but still sing high notes, just as someone with a high voice can sing low notes and sound high.
A good example of this is Meatloaf - he sings insanely high notes for a man but because his voice sounds deep, it seems that he's singing lower notes than he really is but in actual fact he's singing higher than most men will ever be able to reach.
Elton is not singing an octave lower.

I much prefer his voice now than his voice as a younger man. I think it has much more character and seems to bring out the soulful side that is in much of his music.

I prefer his younger voice but I hear what your saying; as he's gotten older he seems to sing with something more bordering on conviction or personal experience. A good way for a voice to age, to sing with wisdom you know?

I prefer his voice when he was younger. He can't hit the high notes any more. Ever hear him sing "Rocket Man" these days? He just can't do it. "Benny and the Jets"?? Same story. Likewise "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". Any song which has high notes just doesn't sound the same.
His vocal cords are all messed up. That's what sucking cock does to you. Especially if you swallow. That stuff aint meant to go down your throat.

@arod2222 He had vocal cord surgery in the late 80s. This very much changed the character of his voice but I fully agree: His voice now sounds so much more powerful and soulful. Elton, when will you come to Japan again? It has been too long...

Didn't he have some kind of growth in his throat or on his vocal chords in the mid-80's that changed his voice? If I remember correctly, his voice changed suddenly and I thought some type of operation was the reason.

I liked him better when he was younger. Hes just not as good any more. Also, i never knew he had drug or alcahol problems. Poor guy missed a few steps over the years in my ears, but thats just me.

Well after all the hard drugs, drinking for so long, smoking and bulimia, you can't exactly not expect his voice to change. In my eyes, he's lucky to still be singing at all.
But I'm a fan of his new and old stuff and like his voice just the same. ow he can hit lower notes while once he could hit the high ones. Not a bad trade.

Usually the loss of high notes as a singer ages ... makes their singing of the songs of their youth ... a pale reflection (if not parody) of their greatness ...
