How could you not out walk out of that show and that performance and realize that you had just seen one of the greatest live performances and know that this band will be legendary from there on out?
Thanks for posting this awesome video. A quick correction from a fellow Police nut. This was not their first American tour. Their first tour of the states was in late 1978 when they were barely holding it together. The Outlandes video which this performance is taken from has a Steward Copeland quote about coming to America where there was a "need for the movemement but the bus hadn't yet arrived" and then cuts to this clip which is somewhat misleading. This performance was later.
i like the part when he sings: "daylight comes and you wanna go home". That is fucking great. The whistling sounds are also very cool. It's cool I can imitate the whistling. oohoo oohoo!
@vakeromty Not sure what you mean by that. Although they were a totally unknown comodity in the US in 1979, they were so amazingly great live that there was really never a chance of the audience not being completely blown away by them. THat's my take anyway. :-) Cheers
i met stewart at n.a.m.m. just before they kicked off their reunion tour. it was an hour and a half before he was scheduled to show up and my friend forced me to wait at the signing booth. by the time stewart showed up (on time) my friend followed the never ending trail of people which snaked all throughout the venue. as he asked, 95% of the people were there for stewart. im glad he made me start that line, for i was the first to meet him and get an autograph and picture.

@TheMissOuLaLa I saw The Police when I was 15 at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, August 24, 1983. They were and still are my idols forever.... God, Sting is at the peak of his fucking coolness in this performance. The ballbreaking energy of 'Losing You/Regatta' is just killer. Still looking to form my Police Tribute band in Philly at age 44!!! Know all the bass lines...
Having seen this show or any at that time; is there any wonder how one couldn't foresee this band being one of the greatest in rock history. The sheer talent outweighs many bands of that time and genre. Copeland is incomparable and miles from anyone else. And Stings vocals and writing stand alone.
Now look very closely, you little, shitty, faget boybands thinking you know it all... THIS IS how it's really done!!.....
Raw energy, musical skill, combined with synergy and chemistry!... Watch closely, again and again.. Then again, don't.. you'll never get to that level.
was born a gordon sumner fan...was my older brothers teacher in school, so wat the fuk r u talking about ye sad fuk...try coming from gateshead and find out wat ye talking aboot
I think you've misunderstood what I exactly meant here.I've lived for 7 years in Wallsend, Station Road..Exactly..What I meant with my remark, is that this video, is the best I've ever seen. Especially Sting's thundering bass and his fantastic, loud, "DEEOO"- scream. That's what it's all about. I think that todays boy-bands should take a good look how it's really done, by The Police. They're one of the rare bands who played live just as good and maybe even better, than on record. Relax man, relax.
@alpeartree lol if you think boybands have any pretense of being legitimate artists and aren't just a product of some label executive. lol how stupid you must be IRL
Visited Florida in 79 and I was there at this concert in October 1979 - I met the guys at Kennedy Space Centre where they were filming the video for Walking on the Moon and chatted to them, got their autographs and we got tickets for the gig. Took my cousin Sean. It was amazing.
WOW !!! can you feel the power, the drive, the energy. Sting is full of power, the drummer is full of power, but what's the matter with the guitar player? he semms so cool. the performance gives me a bang, perfect. pure power !!!
That's what I love about Andy, Stewart, and Sting... They never leave anything off the stage.. Every time they stepped out on that stage they gave it everything they had!
ROCK ON POLICE!!
You gotta tour again! Because we can't stand losing you!
the police are great at low or high volume....but this one....PLEASE turn up the vol....for max effect....this is what the police would sound like in your house....amazing.....MUSIC at it's best....just out of interest...as a guitarist, i used this vid to get the fingering right for the harmonics part of 'regatta'....long live the Police...i don't really need to say that cos i'm sure they will anyway :)
The moment at 2:16 is like shifting up to 4th gear in a Ferrari. When Copeland goes to the ride cymbal at 2:28 it's like shifting to 5th and burying the pedal! Thanks Stewart, Sting and Andy for this. It's been burning since 1979.
Damn, the sight of Stewart behind a set of Tama's is still the coolest and thrilling thing in Rock and Roll! Thanks for this video, it instantly brought back why I was such a Police fanatic in the 80s. Incredible.
Yeah, I saw them early in '80 at a 'Police Picnic' in Toronto, I think around Regatta de Blanc timeframe, and then again for the Synchronicity tour in '84 in Buffalo. Sting was the star, but it was Stewart's unfrickin'believable drumming that drew me in. All my friends were like, "Neal Peart rules!" and I was saying, are you kidding me? Listen to this guy!
This clip isn't as clean sounding as watching it on "Outlandos to Synchronicities: a History of the Police Live" but it is the best recording I have heard so far of Reggatta de Blanc. Copeland's drums sound fantastic. That Paiste ride cymbal he used sounded great on record, live, even on bootlegs.
since i was 14 years old, i've waited 27 years to see this wonder. in three days, i'll fly to barcelona to feel this sort of stunning chemistry and magnetism and power. a wish for everyone's dreams to come true, at least once
As much as I enjoyed seeing them together again, I wouldn't say that they had either the power or the chemistry that you see in this video. This is some incredibly powerful shit.
This was filmed live for the Old Grey Whistle Test show on BBC2 10-26-1979 Miami, FL Gusman Auditorium USA. A very rare thing for them as they always just filmed bands in their studio. They also did a one-off special called Police In The East. It's basically even more amazing footage and inteviews that comprise the Around The World VHS. Someone has to release this soon!
I love how they could jump from song to song and change the melody so fast...and yet do it so smoothly and flawlessly! The Police were awesome. Sometimes I think I was just born too late.
This is the Gusman Theatre in downtown Miami. You can't tell from the clip, but it's a very beautiful historic theatre, built in 1925. It's been fully restored and it really is breathtakingly beautiful.

thats another program man, its a vid called "outlandos to synchronicities - a history of the police" or something to that affect. i've got it on vhs at home XD its pretty awsome! it has a bunch of live preformances and interviews on it, if u can find it get it!
tienes que verlos ahora! Los vi con mi familia en Arizona el junio 18. WOW!!! Mi esposa estubo como una chica de 18 años~! y yo como cuando los vi la ultima vez antes de que se separaron en los 80's :) Se pasaron!
Andy who? Stewart who? OOOH. Those guys. Just teasing, I love them, too, but in a different way. :) They are GREAT at what they do. Now, as I was saying- wow Sting was sexy.
Regatta De Blanc is one of the best instrumentals i've ever heard. Copeland, Sting, and Summers give off absolutely incredible performances in that song...IMO some of the best I have ever heard. All three of these guys are among some of the best at their instruments at least in my opinion. The Police are one of the greatest bands ever....one of a kind certainly.
You're exactly right. How asinine to assert that one individual in a GROUP, makes the group. Especially when each in The Police provided a unique, and / or special sound.
Hate to be a stickler for details, but it says Miami, October 1979 at the beginning of the clip. Zenyatta wasn't recorded until the summer of 1980, and the tour obviously came after that.
Even before their heyday, the Police distinguished themselves by surpassing the mediocrity of their peers. This live performance of 'Reggatta de Blanc' captures the core essence of this magical trio. The Police were a musical powerhouse that radiated a shimmering, explosive energy. They channeled their immense talent and generated a powerful electric force, which kept them at the top, and propelled them further Up to the highest level of superstardom.
Funny that with time The Police almost seem like soft rock (I said ALMOST!), but watching this video reminds me of what a high-energy, nearly frenetic jam band they were. It's just crazy. It's like they're all over the map AND tight as hell at the same time. Mad, frantic genius. This is one of the great three piece rock bands of all time, in their finest form.
Copeland rules-listen to Nigel Gray on the 10 days or so needed to record Regatta de Blanc and the number of times he drummed with wrong sticks deliberately kept like that. Met Stewart in Ghent when presenting 8mm movie on touring experiences, demons are out of all 3 of them and they feel like rocking the hell out of everyone, how sharp they were at grammy´s. Cream, Hendrix Experience, Blind Faith, Police, say no more. Mitch Mitchell, Art Blakey, Ginger Baker, Stewart Copeland, say no more.
I'd much rather hear Sting scream Day-o at sporting events instead of Harry Belafonte

Always good to hear Andy live, Sting and Stewart would only give him like eight bars for his solo on the albums, but he wailed away live.

Let´s not forget to mentions andy summer´s exquisite minimalisim and sound that´s very much a part of Police´s sound

I agree. Andy Summmers' distinct style greatly contributed to the "Police Sound."
Here's a confident quote from Andy: "As far as I'm concerned, The Police didn't really start until I joined."

Holy CRAP. If this reunion tour this summer can generate one tenth of this energy, it'll be amazing.

>Stewart Copeland is not simply a drummer; he is a Master of percussion.
>Andy Summers' ethereal talent transcends space & time.
>Stings' Commanding presence on stage was absolutely magnetic; he knew exactly how to capture the attention of the audience.
>The Police are music icons.
