  • btw this the best version imo

  • this my jam right here!!

  • 1984. Tabu Records

  • Yes to those who know this is the original bad...bad tunesay yes to da sista

  • Yes to livinglivingMindfully1975...I remember that part of the vid...that was BAAAAAAd for an ape to do that back that.....Break dancin' ya boyyyyy!!

  • This kinda sucks, My bad for watching,

  • mariah was better...in my opinion!

  • @MusicGurl2501 I agree. Mariah's version was equally as great.

  • @terelon Mariah shyt wasnt equally great, fuk u talkin bout!!!!!

  • slaps!!!

  • Oddly enough Jam & Lewis recycled the chords in this song when they composed the song "I Need Your Loving" for the Human League two years later.

  • love this song and i havent heard it in such a long time, i am proud of the uploader and i would like to say that this is the kind of music we need to open up our hearts to being inlove with each other and ultimately the world is defiantly in need of some love and i cant help to say sometime i need to be love too. Anybody wanna dance i'm bout to get up right now and hit the living room floor, let me see if i still got it? yeah i got it, a little rusty though!!! LOL PEACE and LOVE

  • Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis , are masters of the key boards and bass synthesizers, , they programmed the drums too...hella funky, masters I tell ya, masters...very cool music even now and back in the day.

  • sounds like Prince.

  • these were the good old days bac in the day had a lot of fun.

  • CLASSIC

  • CHERRELLE rolled

  • 2 people dont know how to get turned on

  • Hell yeah!!!

  • A TRUE CLASSIC THANKS JAM & LEWIS

  • Paula Abdul sounds similar to her.

  • I'm sure this is THE original.

I remember Maurice White (EW&F) making a big thing about Robert Palmer's cover scoring big in the charts while the original hardly got played. He made a 'racial thing' out of it.

  • @WorldWideWish He's right....Just like the Beatles scoring big off of Motown songs....But it's expected...the developed world mirrors those that excelled financially during those days....Now everyone has the ability to shine..However the musicianship, vocal ability and authenticity that was prevalent in the 1900's is gone...Sometimes segregation brings out the best in people....

  • 2 people hate this????

Must be beiber & gaga fans.....damn!

  • DAMN I WOULD FUCK THIS LADY SHE IS FINE AS HELL

  • @maadyl Palmer's song was made two years after this one

    .

  • @electrictroy2010 really, didnt know that.both good classics.u remember the remake on the above the rim soundtrack?

  • Comment removed

  • @maadyl Palmer made a remake not the original

  • Man i remember my dad used to play this all the time...Gotta love the old skool

  • Wooooooooooooooooooo weeeeeeeeeeeeee, this was the jam!

  • This is also one of my all time favorites.

  • holla! Cherrelle!

  • Didn't Robert Palmer record this song too?

  • @Eseercam yes...he took his cover version to #2 on the pop charts in the summer of 1986!

  • is the gist of this song "please don't date rape me"?

  • @ap181706 Not really. I guess that's an implication, but it's a little more complicated than "Please don't date rape me." You've never interacted with someone and they've gotten the wrong idea, then you feel kind of bad because they're not a bad person, you just didn't mean to turn them on?

  • @scientrophic True. I think my post was due mainly to listening to the Robert Palmer version and the very different reactions they elicited in me.

  • @ap181706 WTF???? Happy feel good music from the 80's. Where's your mind?!?

  • @regina7177 My mind is listening to the lyrics. That's actually one of the reasons I like 80s music- the mood of the music often contrasts with the mood of the lyrics/ subject matter (Alphaville's "Forever Young" comes to mind).

  • Jam & Lewis' greatest production ever, next to "innocent" by alexander o'neal

  • Yea she rocked and still does, did an outstanding job at the BET awards the other week, poor Alex all i can say!!!

  • PURE HEAT!

  • CLASSIC 80s R&B

  • this is a hot production

  • thumbs up if you're old enough to remember this video, with King Kong break dancing in the video!!

  • @LivingMindfully1975 i remember this shit back when mtv played videos

  • @vibebuzz yes i do remember the good ol dys. I remeber when my mom would come back home late from the clubs with all her friends and they would jamthis and the kids had to stay in the room. Loved this joint!!!!!!!!!!

  • @LivingMindfully1975 heck yeah i laughed so hard when king kong started popping, great song great video.

  • @LivingMindfully1975 I remember

  • OMG, this is my jam. I need to thank Mariah Carey for turning me on to this song from the Glitter soundtrack. Cherrelle really did her thing on this track - awesome. The original and Carey's cover are both hot like FIRE. Love it!

  • Mariah Carey's Remake from the Glitter soundtrack is better than the original!

  • @GOTNOTIME4BS ...NOOOOOOOOO WAYYYYY!!!!!

  • @LivingMindfully1975 GOTNOTIME must be from the 90's, not to appreciate the music from the 80's.

  • 2 people obviously don't know good music....

  • im a 16 year old male and i BLAST this shit in my room. fuck it if my friends laugh. i dont give a DAMN

  • @Skyy301 are you gay? cuz i am..let's be gay together and dance to this;.... woo hoo!! !!

  • @badtznikmaru WTF?? hell naw im not gay, i LOVE pussy for LIFE kid

  • Wow....it still sounds good after all these years!! Basement Party!!!!!!

  • I know this came out in 1984, but this sounds like something The Neptunes would produce lol. classic joint.

  • much better than robert palmer's version by millions of miles :)))))

  • oh shit!! it's time for another 8- Ball reference... who's gonna talk shit when I say "Boy I sure could go for a 8-Ball while i listen to this and some Keith Sweat"...

  • @mnemrod LOL, hey, do your thang playa. Me on the other hand, I feel a need to make a reference to a different kind of 8 ball. I could sure go for listening to this, some Al B. Sure in my 8 ball jacket. HaHa

  • She is the original Fly Girl as Pebbles said

  • @mercedesshalay I hope they do a Unsung of Pebbles, and Karyn White!

  • My Fave prt on Unsung is when Cherelle and her cousin Pebbles where singing this and they PAUSED at the same time they were crackin up i was lolololololol too!!

  • @blakvegas hahahaha..yes that part was funny...i had no clue that pebbles was her cousin...she grew up with connections....

  • @mercedesshalay connections AND MONEY! Shes a valley girl straight from Beverly Hills

  • I saw her story on Unsung last night....and this woman is pure fire!!!!...As a 90s baby I enjoy finding out where the original sounds came from!!!!....She definitely turned me on to her music :)

  • The video to this song is one of my favorites of all time.

  • Funky Electronica.... :D

  • @oceania68 LMFAO

  • This song makes me wish i had a 8 ball of crack...

  • @mnemrod dude sori but thats a no bueno! Nothing should make you wish that. Real talk.

  • @sweetnessnbk Lol!

  • @mnemrod Go get it and overdose... Nimrod.

  • EXCELENTE VERSION

  • luv it classsssiiicccc

  • jam and lewis's finest production, next to alexander o'neal's "innocent"

  • All this time I had no idea that the Robert Palmer song was a cover :O ...This is one of those tunes that gets stuck in your head out of the blue...

  • rest in peace real music

  • even thought ima 90's baby... this is myy shxt.!!!!!!!!

  • cherelle new what was up. i've had a lot of men that felt i was leading them on & i had no intentions of doing that. i just wanted a friend but he wanted more & even now living in winona,mn i have met men that i wanted 2 turn on but they didnt want me so i am looking 4 someone that wants love like i do & isnt looking at color

  • ....missed all of it. Message music of the 60's, Funk of the 70's and 80's, Nu Jack of the 80's and 90's, MJ, EWF, SOS, Confunction, Commondores, Issac, Isley's, Maze, Prince, Time, Temps, Tony Toni Tone, Bar Kays, damn can't remember them all but them too. I miss them all. And what do we have in exchange? MC light, Snoop dog, MC nobody, and track and mixing bull shit. We have miss 20 to 30 years of new creative talent that has passed by without an opportunity.

    Shameful (music industry)!

  • I miss the 60's, 70's, 80's, and parts of the 90's. You had to be a musician to get a record deal. Today you just have to act the biggest fool in the joint and be dumb enough not to know how to negotiate a contract and you will be signed for 2 CD's. Russell Simons is the biggest record whore on the planet. He started this bull sh and defends it saying that its talent to mix and rap. Yea right.

  • i miss these songs

  • I don't mind when people prefer a cover to the original as long as they know which is the original and understand it takes more to perform an original song than to remake someone else's work. Too many people just decide "if it's the one I heard first, it's the original". Check first before you say something dumb.

  • @young1belly Sorry but it was L.A. Reid, Babyface producing partner and former executive of Island/DefJam Records, who married Pebbles. Terry Lewis married Karyn White, do not know if they are still married.

  • WITH ALL DO RESPECT TO ALL THE GREAT FEMALE SINGERS FROM THE 80'S,THIS LADY HERE WAS AS GOOD AS IT GETS.TO BAD ALEX GOT TO HER BEFORE ME.CHERRELLE WAS CERTAINLY ONE OF A KIND&ONE OF THE BEST FROM THE 80'S.

  • Anyone remember the break dancing gorilla from the video? LOL!

  • Jam & Lewis pet female vocalist project, that is until Ms. Janet came along and then Cherrelle & Alexander O'Neal were kicked to the curve. What a shame.

  • @eric2181965 one of them married Pebbles who was Cherelles cousin- kicked both of them to the curb for Janet LOL

  • wow

  • Its the original..nice:-)..but I prefer Robert Palmers Version..it sounds cooler

  • NEED MORE MUSIC LIKE THIS NOWADAYS-HOW COULD YOU NOT LIKE THIS?

  • Rob Palmer's version was 2nd This is the Original and way better than Rob Palmers!!!

  • Some of the best synth in a song....changing bass lines,solos............niiiiiice !!!!

  • NOW THIS IS A CLASSIC

  • :( I miss the music from the 80's

  • I've heard several remakes of this song, but this is my first time to hear the original, and I gotta say it's pretty damn good

  • this track is pure FIRE!!!!!!

  • I dig this song and Palmer's version, too. Mariah...nah, forget her.

  • @71666kdb HOLLLLLAAAAAAAA lol

  • Holla if you miss the 80's!

  • @71666kdb love this song, michelle, pepples and her was the queens of this sound

  • @71666kdb whoooa, cant stop the replay!!!!!!!! and the rocking out that consumes me!!!!!!

  • @71666kdb ...U better know it babe! The best, simply the best times ever!!!!!

  • @71666kdb I'm from the 80's YAY!

  • @71666kdb HOLLA HOLLA HOLLA;)!!

  • @71666kdb THE 80'S WERE THE BEST YEARS...SOME GREAT MUSIC BACK THEN.

  • @71666kdb AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

  • am only 17 ndd i knw this whole song i love it ! even tho this way before my time !

    I LOVE YOU CHERRELLE ! <3

  • Most (not all) women are lying when they say the title to this!

  • This takes back to the day in which I used to go rollerskating during my mid-teens.

  • And go figure, Robert Palmer's far inferior, musically anemic version became the bigger hit a couple years after this. Cherrelle's original remains untouchable.

  • @merlynwise Nothing to figure out. We all know what's really up!

  • the 80's, corny maybe, is truly the last era of originality. miss songs like this very much.

  • @VonSchlerrgenberger I'd say the 90s was the "last era of originality" I witnessed the 70's and 80's and after the 90's everything started to suck.

  • thats one long ass song DAMN!

  • @jaevilla that's the beauty of old school: it's not 3-4 minutes of BS

  • I love 80's music, although I wasn't born until '87. I've got a mixed feeling with this track though. It's an awesome track, but the message of the song kind of tears open old wounds :-) Two girls in my life didn't mean to turn me on, but I understood it otherwise...

  • Great hit from the 80's love it....

  • aaayy que recuerdos.....exelente

  • Yes, ma'am this is my shish.

  • thank u Doctorphilly

  • @shiggadee!! listen to mariahs version of this!!! its sooo much better by far!

  • I was trying to lead you onnnn<333

    SICK JAMM!

    :)

  • Hmm...I like both versions.

  • i like mariahs one versian better, she makes it sound sexy. thats what the songs about isnt it? ('didnt meant to turn you on') no offence to the people that likes it, but she sounds dead singing this LOL.

  • EPIC synth solo at 2:42!

  • I strongly disagree with alot of people here. Mariah's cover of this song is brilliant, she sounds fantastic and does put emotion into it, as she does with every song she does.

Hey, don't get me wrong. I mean, the orginal is always the best in the end <3

  • tMariahs is soooooooooo much better that this!!!!! almost makes u not want to listen to cherrelles version again . sry but true

  • @Jannfann21I strongly disagree, Cherelle has the perfect voice for this. It sounds like Mariah is doing a cover whereas this IS Cherelle's song. You can hear the emotion in her voice unlike the cover. You have to listen to this loud because the cover is already a lot louder due to modern compression. I guarantee this version sounds far superior if you had them side by side. Much better voice.

  • @maccagrabme i agree ...mariah just sang over the same beats...mariahs version has no emotion...

  • @maccagrabme i just heard mariah's version i thought i was at a funeralthe original is better

  • @Jannfann21 such a dumbass..

  • 1 of the greatest!

  • Mean it or not...YOU TURNED ME ON! Thank you so much! APB

  • I actually really like this. Even if it is cheesy guilty pleasure 80's music. It is 80s right? Or 90s maybe, idk.

  • @kmacmuzikmafia27 1984 I believe

  • @kmacmuzikmafia27

Definitely 80's, listen at that beat, very characteristic...pure sound out of a Casio or something lol

  • good song but........ mariah did it better

  • Wait who all did this? Robert Palmer, Cherrelle, Mariah Carey... Who was first even?

  • @thegreatklaid

    Cherryl

The song was originally written and produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis

  • I <3 this song!!! Love you Cherrelle, continue with your songs!!

  • FUCKING MOST SICK SONG I EVER HEARD ON AN IRISH RADIO STATION!

  • HAHAHA GOODTIMES WITH MY LOST CAUSE

  • i like this song, but i think mariah carey does it better

  • @usherrules11

Well I like Cherrelle's better. She has more soul. .

  • @usherrules11 yeah, we know you were born in the 80's or 90's. you crazy and young!

  • Thanks for posting. When I moved to San Diego in 1984 I remember radio station 92.5 playing this song quite a bit.

  • cherelle was rocking out on monique's show singing this joint!

  • I just don't understand why she didn't have her own pic on this album ... it was great and she is beautiful!

  • Sob....brings back memories as a teen. God, I still remember the BET video for this song! her with King Kong! classic!

  • I used to g crazy over this!! Young, out of high school and acting a fool!

  • Jimmy JAMming @ 2:44 - 3:16!

  • This that music that takes me back to Tichnor & Alameda 1200 Blocc STC....Compton baby!! Them Crip Crazy 1980s....thangs was cool back then... RIP Wink Loc

  • Loves it !

  • I can't believe she's going to be 52

  • Thanks to John C Reily mentioning this on Jimmy Fallon tonight, I had forgot all about this song... Memories of happy times :-)

  • love it!

  • @dezandkamsmom SHE GO SO HARD RARE SONG

  • woot loves it!!

  • Did Prince write this song? It has his distinct sound to it.

  • @Beyjay09 No Prince didn't write it. But the reason why it has a "distinct" sound is b/c it was produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis who are part of the 80's band The Time who are from Minneapolis along with Prince, who are good friends and toured together during the Purple Rain days, also they (The Time)were featured in the movie. So you are hearing that Minneapolis Sound.

  • @MissB2483 I was thinking the same thing about that Prince sound--thanks for clearing that up. Good thing Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis developed a new sound by the time they starting producing Janet Jackson or her career might have never taken off.

  • @jsyersiii yeah when people hear that Minneapolis sound they automatically think of Prince, and rightfully so b/c he brought it to the forefront but The Time and Prince & The Revolution are the real masterminds behind the sound. But they all grew as musicians and their sounds grew also, thats why Janet didn't have the sound, thank goodness lol.

  • Nice Robert Palmer cover

  • @shedale19

Not true. Cherelle made this song first. Robert Palmer covered it and made it popular but this version is much better IMO.

  • @lequory I didn't know that he covered it. He made it popular and I prefer his version but Cherelle certainly is very good.

  • @shedale19

Robert was given this song after Cherrelle recorded it. So actually Robery covered it and not Cherrelle.
