Broy wasn't killed in real life. He survived well past the Irish Civil War and the IRC never found him out. He lived well into the 1970s. Wonder why the film said he was captured and killed.
@pmalone4 He's a stand-in for all those who were found and killed. In short, as is common screenwriting practice, he was merged with a number of other historical people to make a single easy-to-understand character within the movie.
from @03:46 still shocking that the offical british army back in those years could just go into a football game and shoot civilians- innocent footballers/people watching the match ! :O
@29lisamh It didn't quite happen in the way shown in the movie. It was still an atrocity, but it wasn't that the British just mowed people down otherwise being peaceful and not moving. Rather, the British had been sent to search for enemy members in the crowd and when some ran at their approach they over-reacted by opening fire by assuming those fleeing were guilty and trying to escape. What happened was wrong, but it wasn't just mindless revenge, but a tense situation handled (very) badly.
Though many specifics of this clip are inaccurate (the tank massacring the spectators of the game, etc.) the Black and Tans did kill innocent Irish civilians in retaliation for killing of members of the Cairo gang.
What a horror story for the British Isles. Humanity can only hope that ethnic hatred in the Isles is forgotten and is healed the world over.
@OpeningSalvoe It is. The Anglo-Irish treaty in 1921 didn't "beat" the British Empire like Collins says somewhere in the film. Far from it as it happens. But oh well
@TalonMercenary Of course we BEAT you, we drove you out of 5/6 of the country just as we'll soon have you driven out of the remaining 6th and this movie is a great retelling of just how that was achieved. It's not propaganda it's HISTORY whether you like it or not lol.
@OpeningSalvoe Collins himself knew that the agreement he came away with was heavily favoured to the British, and though the civil war was fought over it, it was still accepted how it is today. The people of Northern Ireland WANT to be British. Deal with it
@TalonMercenary I couldn't give a flying FUCK what the people of Northern Ireland WANT. I will NEVER accept the ILLEGAL occupation of part of my country. What the people of Northern Ireland WANT is entirely IRRELEVANT. Collins DEFEATED the british because the british no longer have a presence in 5/6 of Ireland. DEAL with it.
@jonoessex Look dude. I'm Irish. I'm also Protestant. People don't judge me by that because I'm not full of shit trying to say I'm English. Hate to break it to the people in the north but YOU CANT BE FUCKING ENGLISH IN IRELAND!!! ITS BLOODY IMPOSSIBLE!!! just like I can't decide I'm gonna be American in Germany!! I don't know how you can think the English murdering millions of innocent Irish men, women and children is ok. I don't think discrimination is ok and I'd like Ireland to be united once
@IL0veAllTimeLow thats my opinion,i think that the whole religion thing was created by english propaganda, prodestant or catholic, were all christian. the real struggle is ireland for people born on that island aka irish
@shanekeane200123456 The film leads the viewer to believe that the Real IRA are fighting an independence war because unionism is not explained to them. Americans gave money to PIRA for years. I never said Schindlers list was a celebration of Germany. I said it was a celebration of a German therefore it was not anti-German. I am not a defender of the actions of the Black and Tans but I believe that people's view of them in ireland is clearly coloured by patriotism.
@shanekeane200123456 The viewer would not know unionists existed from watching this film. Therefore they will believe that the people in the 6 counties want independence but are denied it by the brits. This could lead to people giving money to the Real IRA. It could result in IRISH people being killed.
@shanekeane200123456 Schindlers list is essentially a celebration of a German hero. It is not anti-German. The British are very passive about viciously anti-British films like this. If blacks or jews were presented the way the Brits are in films there would be uproar. To say brtis are indoctrinated into imperial nostalgia at school is a nasty slander on the british education system. It is untrue. The misrepresentation of partition in the film is not trivial.
@shanekeane200123456 I haven't said anything at all about the BE being humane. it was built on exploitation. However I'm talking about the dishonesty of the film. If you're admitting to me that bloody sunday was presented falsely (it was ask any historian) you are admitting that the film is not historically accurate. The Germans don't moan about Schindlers list that's right. I fail to see why a German would moan about a film celebrating German heroism.
@shanekeane200123456 You could have shown British soldiers entering the ground then for instance one soldier shouting "there's an IRA sniper in the crowd" and then the soldiers firing into the crowd. This would have been closer to the truth of what happened. However the goal of the film-maker is to show the British as totally evil and totally cowardly. The best way to do that is to lie to the viewer and show the british firing indiscriminately and deliberately at civilians from a secure vehicle
I can't believe that whenever I talk about the Black and Tans and this massacre with some of my classmates in my Scottish school, they demand that I say English Soldiers, not British Soldiers. It's maddening.
@libertycap666 I'm British/English and the way we acted makes feel ashamed, especially the Black and Tans. I know that 'sorry' doesn't cover what we did, but I am sorry for it. Palestine and Ireland. Two small countries that have had to endure decades of bloodshed because of colonisation.
@19996669991 Educate yourself and look up the events that led up to bloody Sunday, it's not so black and white. I wouldn't go too much by this movie as even Jordan himself claims it's not historically accurate.
5:11.............such craven cowardice! hiding in a tin wagon like old weak women! how shameful it must be to be one unfortunate enough to be descended from chicken shits like that!
@TheAvarusAnimus The british did not send an armoured vehicle on to the pitch and start shooting indiscriminately at the crowd. This is an anti-british propaganda version of what happened. If you go into wikipedia michael collins film misconceptions this backs up what I'm saying
@jonoessex I was talking about the massacre in general. The armoured car part is fiction but the RIC did fire indiscriminately into the crowd and that comes from eye witness accounts which I have read in University. The film as you point out is full of inaccuracies.Neil Jordan said he had to make a film people were willing to watch for 2 hours rather than a historical documentary filled with minute detail which is a little annoying.Only one massacre out of hundreds that are untold unfortunately.
@TheAvarusAnimus The massacre could just have easily been presented accurately. Jordan just wanted to put in anti-british propaganda. As a result he is spreading ignorance and hatred. Anyone making a film about such a sensitive topic is under an obligation to be truthful.
@jonoessex I agree it should have been shown accurately. It still would have shown a massacre though so the film would never have been Pro-British either as the Police did kill unarmed innocent people in a football stadium! On Wikipedia it states Neil Jordan changed the scene because showing policemen do the shooting would have made it "too terrifying" for the film's tone.So I suppose he used a little too much artistic freedom there!Blame Neil Jordan :P
@TheAvarusAnimus All I ask is that the film is accurate and truthful. It would still have presented the british in a bad light but that's fair enough. I object to lies. The shooting did not happen in that way and Jordan has presented it in such a way as to stir up hatred of the british. I would have thought an armoured vehicle driving onto the pitch and shooting indiscriminately was more terrifying. I think this Jordan guy is dishonest.
@anonymous11441144 Aye it was the 2nd part of Bloody Sunday 14 people died out right on that single massacre while 3 people died later while 14 died earlier when the IRA killed 12 agents and 2 auxiliary

@garethella There were 2 options facing your country: Let Ireland do what Iceland did (in which the UK would collapse) or start repaying your own deficit (which is much higher than Ireland's).
@garethella yeah we do..Both countries!UK national Debt stands at over £900 billion and rising! If Ireland hadn't been given money and had collapsed,Britain would have collapsed practically over night! It was in your interest to help as friendly neighbours do!Id like to say THANK YOU to all those actual tax payers in England, Scotland, Wales & NI who have helped out their neighbour in a time of crisis....that shouldn't bother you Gareth as your on welfare getting a bail out every day!
@TheAvarusAnimus ,the difference being we are a developed industrial nation with the means to get out, whereas ireland is a giant farm filled with low foreheads, to give money to ireland was like giving a gypsy a loan of £100, we deserve all we get for that true, but the irish are in much deeper shit than us, we should have let the bastards rot, theyve shown that they cant run nations.eat shit.
4:30 they didnt roll in with tanks they went in with infantry, still it was a terrible spectical 13 people were shot dead and over 20+ wounded. these were innocent people
@Nutkin57 Hindsight is always 20/20 I guess,we now have the benefit of ninety years of history to consider what would have been the right and wrong way to go about things. I am a huge fan of Collins myself but I realised that if I had lived then I probably wouldn't have supported the Treaty he brought back as it still involved swearing an oath to a foreign king, not many had his foresight that eventually we would achieve The Republic and this Treaty was a stepping stone in the right direction.
If i was back in their i would have taken out Dev!! he was a Fool.. didnt have a clue what to do in WAR!! if a small Army is to fight a big Army you Hit and Run, just like the VC done to America in NAM.
Thanks for posting. I couldnt finish my comment, Collins is like the irish george washington, only we didnt kill our george. It is as tho devalera pulled the trigger himself on this true irish patriot. THe irish civil war was a waste. Too bad no one pulled on devalera. My hat is off to the Irish patriots who stuck to their wish for freedom. This is from an american. God bless ireland
I didnt realize what a douceback devalera was. He let Collins take the hit for the supposed bad treaty, which actually gave Ireland what it has today. the northern mostly protestant counties are with UK, the is the republic.
@Topnotch121 Fuck you. Croke Park was a really bad thing, and all you do is mock the great leader Michael Collins.... Why are we Irish or IRA supporters terrorists when the Brits massacred people at Croke Park, took one part of our beautiful country, and use Belfast as a training ground. Fuck the brits, up the RA
@borachan Michael Hogan, Irish footballer and one of 15 people killed. He was a member of the Irish volunteers. He and several other players actually got into a fight with members of the Linconshire regiment and was advised not too attend the match wether he was an actual target or was killed by coincidence he was told before hand to return to Tipperary and not attend the football match.
the croke park part makes me feel so sick, how could they shoot up innocent people there just to watch a match..cunts!!!! and then they did it again in derry..
And what the hell does my observations about the similarities between the BATF and the black and tans have to do with you? Stop talking to me if you don't like my comments....I don't need your pro government bullshit either.
I'm an anarchist. I'm not pro-government. But how are the black and tans and BATF similar? The BATF is a government agency. The tans were more like mercenaries brought in to suppress the rebellion. The BATF is corrupt as hell but you're drawing parallels where they don't belong.
The BATF murdered those people at waco just like the black and tans did to people in Ireland....Their status as mercenaries or a government agency either way, is of no consequence....The parallels that I am making are fair ones and therefore they do belong.
Actually, most are and were like the BATF.....Historically, the state is the leading cause of unnatural deaths all over the entire world, and in every age....Human history is very OFTEN about man's inhumanity to man.
I'm very much in agreement with your last two statements, but to compare them on the basis of "they are an oppressive governmental organization that murder people" is really weak, since you could make a comparison between any military and police force ever using that logic. And enough with Waco, the US government committing crimes here or abroad ain't new or unique
That is why I said "most are"....Which means that not ALL are....I know there are good guys and bad guys in every walk of life, including the military and police.....Simply put, I am going on the basis of the BATF's track record.
As a proud irishmen i despise the tans i think of them as the scum of the earth but i find it funny how much hollywood blows stuff up the tans didnt drive into the match and kill like 50 people the auxilliaries the tans backup leaned over the walls of the park and shot 12 people i think.........
still doesnt make the atrosities they commited against the irish accepteble fuckin scum bags
Disgusting, to think of what Mick Collins died for when you see the corrruption in ireland now. Fucking disgrace. Its not the country he and so many others died for, makes me sick.
jimmy27paul is right! I was in Leeds 2 years ago and my friend's grandfather kept apologising for what happened. Sure he had nothing to do with it! If only he stopped mimicking my accent so badly!.. :P
Irish history made another english ex friend (long story!) of mine feel very uncomfortable when we were taught it in school.
British government were fucking awful psychologists. Had they come across nicer and acted democratically like they claimed so proudly to be there's a good chance there would still be union jacks flying in Dublin today.

God bless ireland
maddkraut03 1 year ago
I didnt realize what a douceback devalera was. He let Collins take the hit for the supposed bad treaty, which actually gave Ireland what it has today. the northern mostly protestant counties are with UK, the is the republic.
maddkraut03 1 year ago
Michael Collins is on the same par as Daniel O'Connell in terms of his service to Ireland. Dev was a coward. Tiocfaidh ar la.

@borachan come to think of it, you're right...maybe some random person killed in the massacre
30secondsflat 1 year ago
@borachan Michael Hogan, Irish footballer and one of 15 people killed. He was a member of the Irish volunteers. He and several other players actually got into a fight with members of the Linconshire regiment and was advised not too attend the match wether he was an actual target or was killed by coincidence he was told before hand to return to Tipperary and not attend the football match.

What the hell does the BATF have to do with the Irish rebellion? Stop spamming up good videos with your fascist conspiracy bullshit.
NYanarchy08 2 years ago 2
And what the hell does my observations about the similarities between the BATF and the black and tans have to do with you? Stop talking to me if you don't like my comments....I don't need your pro government bullshit either.
TheFeralFury 2 years ago
I'm an anarchist. I'm not pro-government. But how are the black and tans and BATF similar? The BATF is a government agency. The tans were more like mercenaries brought in to suppress the rebellion. The BATF is corrupt as hell but you're drawing parallels where they don't belong.
NYanarchy08 2 years ago
The BATF murdered those people at waco just like the black and tans did to people in Ireland....Their status as mercenaries or a government agency either way, is of no consequence....The parallels that I am making are fair ones and therefore they do belong.
TheFeralFury 2 years ago
concur entirely
Topnotch121 2 years ago
Finally, someone who has common sense!.....I don't know why NYanarchy08 couldn't see that.....Have a good one sir.
TheFeralFury 2 years ago
Ok...so they both murder people...that's your evidence...
So I guess every military and police force in the history of humanity are also like BATF too...
IneptTroopr 2 years ago
Actually, most are and were like the BATF.....Historically, the state is the leading cause of unnatural deaths all over the entire world, and in every age....Human history is very OFTEN about man's inhumanity to man.
TheFeralFury 2 years ago
I'm very much in agreement with your last two statements, but to compare them on the basis of "they are an oppressive governmental organization that murder people" is really weak, since you could make a comparison between any military and police force ever using that logic. And enough with Waco, the US government committing crimes here or abroad ain't new or unique
IneptTroopr 2 years ago
That is why I said "most are"....Which means that not ALL are....I know there are good guys and bad guys in every walk of life, including the military and police.....Simply put, I am going on the basis of the BATF's track record.
TheFeralFury 2 years ago
Nope....Try again.. I am comparing the BATF to the black and tans and pointing out the similarities in their behaviour.
TheFeralFury 1 year ago
@TheFeralFury You're comparing the citizens of Ireland to the Branch Davidians? Are you joking?

The people on the field got shoot for what having fun. This is why people like the IRA are fighting the English to gain Ireland freedom.
