Wait...is this the same Iron Man from the Iron Man cartoon that ran concurrent to this cartoon? Because if so, *that* Iron Man's origin story was tweaked slightly; instead of his heart being damaged by shrapnel (thus necessitating the suit's chestpiece to keep the shrapnel in place), it was shrapnel fragments near his spine that caused Tony to develop the suit in order to use its integral magnets to keep the fragments in place so not to sever his spinal cord and thus paralyze him.
