  • I'm doing a report for a class on West Fraser. I'm glad I found this video =]

  • I sympathize with those thrown out of work, but you all saw this coming, and if you didn't I'm sorry. Retrain and encourage politicians to diversify their economies....eco-tourism etc. Corporations are great consuming constructs, they will not stop until everything is gone, and they have pocketed their last dollar.

  • I'm all for the environment (sustainability), but this video is retarded. Cariboo aren't decreasing in pop. because of West Fraser and loggers. Or any other main animals for that reason. I work for a sawmill. What do you suggest for the thousands to millions of jobs lost by this type of radical non-factual basis of information. Some university/college/environmentalists are dumb and brain-washed into thinking everything will or should be green and non-civilized like.

  • Lawrence, your comment speaks for itself. Repeating the bogus claims of West Fraser won't make them true. West Fraser is the number one logger of Mountain Caribou habitat and their actions are directly threatening one of North America's most endangered mammals. Period.

  • You should refer to coldcitydweller's observation below that more environmentally friendly logging practices would actually produce more forestry jobs.

  • There are an amazing number of people who think if you stop companies from clearcut logging and make them use selective logging techniques that there will be fewer jobs. The reality is that the truly amazing massive machines that they use to clearcut forests do the work of 60 men. They would need more loggers not fewer to meet the demand for lumber using selective logging methods. Most jobs lost in the logging industry in the last 50 years have been due to "improved" technology.

  • Hi dissadent! I salute you for your boldness and persistence. I can't help but wonder if you belong to WF, are you? If you can respond and give evidence to support your view I will be more than greatful. Thank you very much.

  • ForestEthics I very much admire your method of attacking a very rich (and powerful) company. My question for you is that if you bring down West Fraser and those people lose their jobs, what will you say to those whose bread suddenly disappears from their table? If you brought up the problem you should give a solution. Caribou is important but you should also think about the people who will be affected too. I admire mohi001 for his honesty though I have to say neither is right.

  • Hi Kevin, good question. If a business model is based on the extinction of a species, then it's not a very good business model to begin with and it needs to change, even if that means a short-term economic impact. That being said the industry faces far greater challenges than protecting habitat for endangered species. In some cases wood supply is running low due to unsustainable cut levels. More importantly the BC industry needs to begin serving the market for sustainable wood products.

  • hey dissadent this is called a video showing a shit load of rainforest that IS destroyed. how is it horse manure. u are a fucking selfish pig.

  • Timberwaste...........Waste Fraser. They all care about money and nothing else!.

  • News Flash! Millions of acres of caribou habitat to be protected. Visit our website for more info - you know the address!

  • mohi001, your threat against caribou at the end of your post detracts from your contribution to the discussion.

  • The fact is there are plenty of trees for companies like West Fraser, they just need to learn to log them sustainably and in ways that don't threaten caribou or the world's remaining old growth forests.

  • I work for WF as do thousands of other people. What do you propose we do if we can't log? Logging creates good high paying jobs and making necklaces for tree hugging hippies won't cut it. So unless you can come up with an alternative I recommends you get used to it. It's easy enough to kill all the caribou, so keep it up and that's exactly what will happen.

  • I AM A TREE HUGGER TOO>>> AND A VEGETARIAN>> But, THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT MATERIALS TO USE BESIDES WOOD >WHICH WILL ROT <SOMETIME>>Then be replaced ,again. Brick, cinderblock, stuco, earthbuilt, strawbale, containerbuilt, metal, and more...signed treehugger

  • Dissadent - None of these campaigns are about "dissing" a company. They're about raising awareness. This video informs consumers and major customers that West Fraser is the number one logger of mountain caribou habitat. Mountain caribou are one of the most endangered mammals in North America...it's pretty simple. Once customers realize this, they can switch to another company with better environmental practices. We're already seeing this with major West Fraser customers.

  • We call these market campaigns, and basically by raising awareness and changing consumer preferences, we're able to change the business practices of companies like West Fraser - in this case, hopefully before mountain caribou go extinct. It's also important to understand that a whole host of other species are dependent on mountain caribou...everything is connected.

  • Hey forest ethics you should check out west fraser's latest monthly publication,Chip Chatter. All about the steps that WF is taking to help protect the enviornment, probably not all true but still a lot a lot more a lot more believable than the utter horse manure that you posted here...

  • West Fraser can chatter all they like, but until we see real protection for mountain caribou (one of North America's most endangered mammals), that's all it is, "chatter." West Fraser is Canada's #1 logger of caribou habitat.

  • Oh yeah I noticed that one of your cpu recycling plants went up in flames a few weeks ago,so again I ask is your feeding the plastics/electronics industry doing the enviornment any favors???Ummm yaeh thats what I thought,Hypocrite

  • Not sure how you're making a connection between ForestEthics and computer recycling?...though electronic waste recycling is obviously a good idea.

  • West Fraser will continue to be the subject of future campaigning because the company continues to log prime caribou habitat, and they log more than any other company in the world. The end result of their actions is that companies are dumping them as a supplier of wood and pulp products (e.g. Victoria's Secret). Until WestFraser changes its approach to one of North America's most endangered mammals, it can expect a continuing loss of business.

  • We need this lumber, the population is increasing, most of the structures across the americas are built with wood,at least in some degree. We are going need, more wood. And like every other living thing, the caribou will be driven to the point of extinction,Then and only then will people/govt step in and do something. Some times you can fix is most times you can't.

  • dissadent - your previous post using hateful language discredits a lot of what you have to say here. Your posts suggesting that all life needs to reach the point of extinction before we do something are representative of the very short-sighted thinking that continues to get us into the environmental catastrophes that we find ourselves in today.

  • Well, thanks for dissecting me.Short-sighted or not I'm being realistic. What are you going to do with that plastic keyboard thats in front of you, when you get a new faster computer, where will it go?You know it will take like a thousand years for it to de-grade.Yet you sit, using it in front of your children, kwnoing full well that you couldn't live without it,and once again as the population increases we will need more computers... where will they all land up...

  • 500 hundred characters isn't enough to say what I want to you tree-hugging fucks

  • OK this is how it goes.West fraser is now the largest forest company in north america.Being such it only makes sense that they would have to be cutting more logs. When weyrhauser was the biggest producer how come I didn't see any of this sort of news? How about canfor??You see,It doesn't matter WHO takes natrual resourses,it doesn't matter WHERE they take it from, its going to an impact on the enviornment.next

  • ever came along,Fact is by besmirching only one company it shows you are not seeing the big picture.People buy these resourses,No matter if its lumber,oil/gas,you name it and when we enjoy using these resourses,we[people]will at any cost.Dissing on company will not stop it,Dissing people will not stop it,It is in out nature to destroy...

  • Don't you know that Caribou are evil and must be destroyed? They threaten the security of the free world...

  • They run 24-7 Just to put more money in H.Ketchum's pocket. Now the market is flooded, prices are down, and competition is running to see who can stay afloat the longest. When they've taken from Canada, they will leave us with destruction, and move down to their newly aquired mills in USA. Screw the environment, and screw the employees! Bug kill's the excuse now. Harvest harvest harvest! They now have a super mill in Quesnel to rape us faster before they move on.

  • Not only do they disrespect the environment, but they have no value for their production employees. They union bust and try rob from us in ways of bennefits just to make the almighty buck. And when they run into trouble like this, they threaten our jobs for our support.

  • Nice video.

One solution could be to raise the money to buy the company. It is time to think outside the box as well as a time for Unity.

The more we connect with one another while doing more for our environment, the quicker we can turn things around.

  • AWESOME COVERAGE ON GLOBAL TV!

This video and the plight of Canada's endangered caribou were the subject of a recent story on Global TV - British Columbia's largest media outlet!

The reporter did a terrific job.

You can watch the story on the ForestEthics website under MULTIMEDIA.

    Check it out!

  • Dear friends,

Last week, West Fraser posted an announcement on its website attacking this video entitled, "West Fraser Corrects Misleading Statements" (April 26, 2007).

Ironically, their announcement contains many statements that are either misleading, unverifiable or simply miss the point.

  • To read ForestEthics' rebuttal of the West Fraser announcement, visit the ForestEthics website.

As always, we remain interested in meeting with West Fraser executives in order to discuss how the company can commit to supporting long-term biodiversity protection in its BC and Alberta tenures.

Unfortunately the company's latest response suggests an effort to obfuscate, rather than to take the action necessary to protect Canada's Caribou.

  • isn't canada supposed to be utopia like europe??? only america does bad stuff like this right.

  • great info...

  • money money money when the timber/trees/logs now its called fibre are all gone dont woorry the wood pigs will be gone too? signed THE TRAPPER

  • The top 25 contributors to Gordon Campbell the Liberal Party of BC are Forestry and Mining companies. This is what campaign contributions buys.Tell Gordon Campbell to permanently stop logging all Old Growth Forest and to bring in Endangered Species Legislation in BC.Are you really green Gordo or just spinning us again!

  • West Fraser sucks!!!!

  • Great Video.........and I live in the Cariboo area!!!

  • seen this on the news man

  • Exceptional~!

  • FE speaks the truth. Government of Alberta is complicit in this tragedy--West Fraser needs to be given an attitude adjustment!

  • Such a tragedy and so unnecessary!

  • Awesome!
