These guys break the stereotype that all modern American metal bands suck. They aren't doing break downs or writing your typical Metalcore / Mallcore stuff.

They don't look like emo kids or wanna be goth kids. Honestly, just from their looks they look about as credible as At The Gates. They do have a Trashy sound, which is more American....but they def have more that classic Gothenburg sound than anything.

This is the ONLY American metal band I've heard to impress me. (12+yrs listening to MDM)

I don't know why some of you feel the need to separate this from Melodic Death Metal. This sounds VERY close to older melo-death, back when the Gothenberg sound was popular. Melodic Death Metal was and is still very awesome, and you should not take it as an insult to The Absence to classify it as such. Hell, even Encyclopedia Metallum categorizes them as melo-death. I do agree that it doesn't quite fit, however.

I've been a fan of this band ever since I heard a clip of the guitarist playing on an ibanez guitars video, I looked up everything they'd ever done and was instantly hooked. They also call Florida home, and so do I, so I thought it just couldn't get any better. I can't wait till they get real big. All hail Florida death metal.

I don't know how you can't hear the Melodic death metal sound in these guy. These guys are extremely good, and you can hear the same kind of stylings used in In flames and Arch enemy. It's nice that we've got some americans who can hold their own with the swedish sound.

I think this is true Melo-Death just like Lost Dreams but for people that think In flames is Melo-Death will probably think this is more Core-like and there's a big difference between European Melo-Death and American!! American Melo-Death is a lot heavier for most people.

@UnrealGeeMan In Flames is MDM, or at least they used to be. They were one of the 3 - 4 bands to start and define the whole genre. Theres no way they can't be MDM lol. I'm not a fan of anything with "core" in it. I've been listening to this stuff before it was even called MDM, then it was just Gothenburg metal. American Metal is heavier sounding, but metals about more than just being tuff. Older MDM bands like At the Gates just had more DEATH in the mix than bands like In Flames.

I really hear LoG guitar work in this but that's great for me because Willie and Mark are very talented guitarists as are these guys. They're not better than EVERY band on Metal Blade but better than about 99.9% of the metal bands coming out these days that make it big. The Absence is great, talented, melodic, brutal.
