This version as some fine acting, but I must say it was rather boring. No one seems very "mad" and loony. Maybe mildly unsettled but nonetheless it lacks some entertainment. : /
I was the Queen of Hearts for Halloween but I looked like the one from the 1972 movie like on the playing card. I also made a costume based on the one form the 1985 movie.
i deny it leave that part out write that down if thats all you know you may stand down then you may sit down call the next witness give your evidence well thats that then well if i must i must what are tarts made of Call the next witness, Really my dear you should cross examine the next witness it really makes my forhead ache' what do you know about this buisness nothing whate ever thats very important
no!no! all the kings lines are wrong!!!! at the school i am attending now has diffrent lines i belive my school they say herald read the acusation consider your verdict call the first witness first witness you ought to have finished when didi you begin write that down take off your hat stolen the twinkiling of what of course twinkiling begans with a T! do you take me for a dunce go one
I like this version it is very close to what happens in the book and i like the sets because it looks like its a drawing and the costumes are beautiful but the acting i would give it a 3/5
The set is beautiful, but the acting is lifeless. The White Rabbit seems bored. He should be constantly flustered and on edge. I don't understand why he has a rabbit body but no rabbit ears. Alice seems smug. I did like it when she flirted with the Knave, though. It reinforces the nonsense of the trial. And I love the line "He stole those tarts!"
Initially, the Rabbit does wear a mask, but takes it off as soon as his character is established so the audience can see the actor's face. That's why the March Hare has no ears in this scene either. Director's concept, go figure.
It's faithful to the book, sure, and a lot of work obviously went into the production... but it lacks life and luster. I'd give it three stars (out of five) for effort and craftsmanship, but that comes with the proviso that it's, well, boring.
Well, technically, this wasn't the ending to this version. It was adapted from a Broadway production which combined the two Alice books ALICE IN WONDERLAND and THROUGH THE LOOKING-GLASS, the first act following the beginning of LOOKING-GLASS with Alice going through the mirror, then following WONDERLAND from Alice meeting the Rabbit up to the end of the trial scene. The second part resumes LOOKING-GLASS with Alice meeting the Red Queen, and going on to her capturing the Red Queen and waking.
I think they did it to avoid confusion with the Red Queen, who is often conflated with the Queen of Hearts even though they are completely different characters.
I Had The Pleasure of meeting Austin Pendleton At a Reasturant in Manhattan while i was celebrating a friends 50th Birhday! And let me tell you what a sweetheart this man is..he came over wish my friend a happy birthday let us take a picture with him..and as we were leaving ..he stood up to say goodnite and asked what was good on the menu lmao!talk about A Real person!
I got to meet him as well, at a screening of "Skidoo" here in Dallas, and I can attest to everything you said about him. I think it was nice of him to come at all, considering how terrible of a movie "Skidoo" is.
This has always been my favorite version, and by far the most faithful to the book if nothing else for the costume/production design. And you're right, Austen Pendleton screaming is the best part!!!!
its true a lot of people don't understand this adaptation, but it does have a faithful following of people who see it for what it really is. I saw this on tape when I was 3 (I'm 25 now) and I never forgot it ever!!
This version is appalling, the acting is so stiff, and there is little expression in the voice.

i think that the problem in this scene is not about acting...to me the problem is in the photography....

Aw, Željko Ivanek is so young in this! And I always love Austin Pendleton.
This is really great, I've never seen this version before. Thanks for posting!

Did anyone else think the ending seemed rather... Unsettling?
I mean, it seemed rather implied that Alice had her head chopped after rather than her waking up from a dream.
FartMaster4000 2 years ago 2
Haha.
I've never thought of it that way.
:D I agree.

Could NOT contain my laughter.
Ahem, anyway, it IS really really accurate. It's pretty much the book, moving. Great.
I love that book...

LOL this was pretty good. I laughed and went back several times to listen to HE STOLE THOSE TARTS!!!
I like Miranda Richardson as the queen from the 1999 version better, though, mainly because of her voice :P
I haven't seen a whole lot of "alices" that kept my attention, but this is definately one!
