Yeah man, I've been checking out a lot if your videos here on YouTube, you've been a great help. My drums has never sounded better. I was so shocked at the littlest details making the world of difference. Very glad I found your videos. Your a great influence.
@militia814 Well thank you very much militia! Means more to me thank you think... nothing like successful letters to keep both you and me playing and experimenting with drums!
All these quick tips videos are really great. I've been playing guitar for eight-ish years now and have been in various bands and decided to pick up the drums, so i know a bit about it already, but all this information is new and extremely helpful.
@Fyreswing That's good to hear. I wish I had taken up guitar but unfortunately that train has left for Clarksville!
It was the opposite for me. I did my post grad studies at Berklee, studied with the world famous vibist Gary Burton... played vibes for 10 years... no drums! Best move I've ever made.... your message of, play a secondary instrument is right on!
Thanks for the response, and for all the videos! I wish you lived in this area so I could bother you about teaching me some stuff, haha. Keep it up man, these videos have really inspired me to seriously pick up drums alongside what I already know from guitar. It's made the jams with my friends interesting so far, since i'm playing a completely different instument now, haha.
Thanks s much! BTW- I spend a good part of my day listening to sound. Been using the Sennheiser HD 250 Linear II's for many years. Great drum phones, I believe they saved my ears!
Not a whole lot. The upper tuning range of the 5" will generate more clarity and definition. The 6" will do a better job in the lower tuning ranges but flattens a bit more in the upper tunings. Also, if you are a hard hitter the 6" has more steam overall. Both depths are compatible in musical genres.
Anytime man. I am getting a custom built kit and no need to look anywhere but on these channels. I will though, give you this link of an artist which I really like (especially the bans he's in and the sound which comes out of his toms toms)
Sean Reinert of "Cynic" and other band named "Portal". The sound of his toms are exactly what I am searching for. You could look it up on youtube and let me know what kind of head and tuning might work.
hey bob... if you have a 6 piece drum kit... a snare, two rack toms and two floor toms and a bass drum... to what tune, note, scale (whatever) would you tune it too??? like you said you tuned the snare with C on the batter and A on the reso side.. and if the batter side is C and A on the reso side, what note do they make when stroked? thanks bob if you could answer these question! lot of peace there!
The snare drum does not behave like the toms. You should detect an "A" on the snare drum. Pitching a set of toms is not an exact science. Shell depth, type, suspension system, etc play a role in pitch orientation. Best to view the "tonal tuning" series on the channel to get you in the ball park. No silver bullets... you have to to experiment, experiment... experiment!
well, since you obviously are a fan of punk, i would go with ddrum because they focus alot on harder music. im thinking of getting a dominion duofade and i play alot of punk.
ive never really gotten into mapex that much, but im pretty sure they dont focus on hard stuff as much.
overall it probably depends mostly on the set more than the company
thanks 4 helping!! im just starting the drums and i only know rudiments on the snare but i barely know any notes!soo this will help me! i dont even know how to put a drum set together!!
oops... nevermind, i just found your two part series on it. i'll ask any questions i have after i watch them on those videos, if i have any. geeze your stuff is helpful
Hey bob, i was wondering... are there any cool quick tips or devices i can use to minimize the sound my snare makes when i hit other drums (the ringing of the snares underneath) without compromising the sound of the snare drum too much?
i really like the sounds of your drums, i dont actually play drums yet (although i know a few things) but i'm looking at a tama rockstar kit. i was wondering if you had any opinions on rockstar kits and if they would be a good for a beginner like me, thanks in advance
The Tama Rockstars are fine entry level drums. There are many others as well. Pearl, Gretsch, Pacific (DW), Ludwig make competitive products. Best to listen to them at a local dealer before a final choice.
First I would like to thank you for your effort on uploading this videos. They are really good help in every matter about being a drummer. Really, thanx!
I have a new drum kit. It is a Pearl vision series. I have a lot of trouble tunning the toms. I can't get the correct sound. It is not the drum kit, it is me dealing with the tune process.
Please, Can you help me? (tom measurements 10x12, 12x13, 14x16)
Oh please call me Bob, no formalities here. Take a listen to my latest upload, "Inspiring Drummers". then let me know if that's snare sound your after. The snare drum is a 5x12 DW Soild Shell tuned@ "B" snare and "D" Batter.
That's verry close to what i want. I like my snare to have a little more POP to i though.
I have a 3.5x13" piccolo snare by DW. I'm not sure what the heads are tuned to. I use it in my UTG Drum Cover video if you wanna hear it. I like how i have it now, but i want to love it, you know? haha
Bob, you are amazing. Not only do you have one of the best natural grooves when you play, but you tune eons ahead of most people, and you have all theses tricks to help get different sounds. Very Nice!
Another very inexpensive way to make your cymbals sizzle is to lay a beaded necklace on them. I keep a chain from a set of dogtags in my cymbal bag and I just put it on the cymbal as if the cymbal stand was a neck. I have also used light tape and taped the same chain inside the bottom hihat cymbal.
Yeah, I've seen danny using it with Tool. The retro screen is extreme innovation as it effects both feel and sound in a big way. The sound is truly retro (single headed BD sound) tons of attack, short sustain punchy. With the feel being very precise, "definite". I can understand how this works for Danny stylistically.
i used the tip from another vid about raising the bass drum up and it sounds great. couple questions: what depth is that 20" bass drum your using? also, i was wondering if mounted floor toms always have more resonence than floor toms with legs?
It is a custom made 17x20. In general, a floor tom with legs that are "shock" mounted will resonate more. However, the DW, (new) Gauger and Noble & Cooley suspension systems work quite well. The problem is in the sheer weight and low head tension of larger diameter drums being suspended from single point.
Hey bob, youre amazing, not only in youre drumming but in your video's aswell. They are relli helpful and now my kit sounds fantastic. Thanks for all the hard work you put into making them!
Bob, Thank you so much for all your tips! I have been drumming for about 20 years and this past Christmas was finally able to get the kit of my dreams. I used several of your tips and my kit sounds better than I ever imagined!!
I used your idea of not overtightening the snare basket, and putting the floor toms and bass on foam pads. I can't believe how much of a difference it makes.
Bob, your my dream drum tech!!!!i love your stuff man, have to admit,i was a remo man myself but i tried out the G-1s after watching one of your videos and now ive found my sound!!! and i recently got a power centre reverse dot snare skin that rocks. and i sware by your base tuning system!!!!!
I wouldn't be concerned unless your a real slammer. I have another set-up shown on the latest "Quik-Tips Pt. 3". You might find that set-up interesting, especially if your handy with tools...making stuff.

hey i got question, whats the difference between black(hydraulic i guess...) remo heads and white(coated) remo heads?,cuz i have a black one, but i hate the harmonic,is the black head doing it?
Most likely the hydraulic is the culprit. If your looking for an "open" colorful sound than stick with the single ply heads. Also, the feel is much more lively compared to the hydraulic combo. A great "in-between" choice would be the Evans EC-2's with a G-1 resonant head. Sorry about the plug but it's a fact.
bob you have expanded my drumming possibilities and it rocks and im getting an ayotte ( or dw ) 8 10 14 13 snare and a 12 in snare with zildjian cymbals k and k customs
Mics are very subjective but the SM91 does a good job on the "attack" characteristic. If you can afford two of them, place 1 facing (reso head) and the other towards the batter head and put em out of "phase"..no mic stands...great sound!
Oh Sure...this tip is directed to those who often, do not use a mic stand. I for one, use both methods to double mic for recording. Placing the mic in the drum is a space-saver and decreases the odds of damaging the front head from someone walking by and clipping the stand.
In actuality, a mic stand is about $30, so to accomplish the same low end capabilities for 30 cents is a very viable and cool option. Just a thought....

thats some good info there, however I think some people (myself included) would cringe at the idea of putting cymbals atop one another just for that "sound". Almost as bad as drilling holes if you ask me.
Hey, I learned tuning drums from your VHS instructional tape years ago! You are a great educator, sir. Should put out more instruction, not only on how to mess around with the drums' sound, but how to PLAY, which you obviously do very well, too :-)

Hi Bob, What are your thoughts on the Evans Retro Screen? Does it kill the tone of the bass drum too much? I know Daney Carey highly recommends them.
Jdrumz321 3 years ago
Yeah, I've seen danny using it with Tool. The retro screen is extreme innovation as it effects both feel and sound in a big way. The sound is truly retro (single headed BD sound) tons of attack, short sustain punchy. With the feel being very precise, "definite". I can understand how this works for Danny stylistically.

Hey, I learned tuning drums from your VHS instructional tape years ago! You are a great educator, sir. Should put out more instruction, not only on how to mess around with the drums' sound, but how to PLAY, which you obviously do very well, too :-)
