I think the movie was filmed in high contrast to make it easier to colorize and create the digital look.

I never really noticed the similarity with the contrast before.

The scenes inside the computer were filmed in black in white. The color on the suits were filled in later, and the backgrounds were done with a backscreen (like bluescreen or greenscreen). If you look closely at the programs' faces, you can tell they're black and white.

3D isn't what TRON first did. it is the first movie to use live animated images(now known as CGI) and backlit animation (now known as the green screen). on another note, this song makes me cry, i don't know why, it just does.

actually, Green screen (or "traveling matte', as it was known when it was first invented) has been around since the 1930's. Tron was just one of the first films to make major use of it in almost every shot.)
