  • Hey I'm trying to make a Jacob's Ladder, with an Oil Burning Ignition Transformer, and I need help, and seeing how you've done it, I was reading some websites that said I need to disassemble the transformer to work like a neon transformer. I'm not sure if you did and just didn't say anything about it, but I need directions on how to either make it work like a neon sign transformer, or give me instructions on just how to make the actual Jacob's Ladder with an Oil Burning Ignition Transformer.

  • Hello larryyhi, the transformer is unmodified. It has two wires that the 120 volts A.C. goes into, and two knobs where the 10,000 volts comes out. The output knobs are where you put the "V" shaped rods that the spark travels up. The rods must be close enough at the bottom so that the spark starts there, and as the air above the spark heats up, the spark rises up the rods. Be sure the rods are NOT painted or coated. You can scrape them with sand paper to be sure. Good Luck, -EM49.
