The turbo Buicks have always captured my heart and on at least 3 occasions I vowed I would buy one. However, compared to the Monte Carlo SS of the same year (which I have owned) they are totally unfun to drive. The car feels like it is 5000 lbs. The SS is nimble and light and a joy to drive. I guess the Big HP of the Buick caused engineering to make it a "not so fun to drive" car so that people wouldn't kill themselves. Too bad. Maybe an Anniversary Firebird?

GN's made around 260 hp the same as the 01 Bullitt Musang V8! That Viper didn't give it all he had cuz if he did the race wouldn't have been 1 sided. The Viper coulda won but not without a good fight. If they had raced a little longer, The GN woulda lost since V6's are mostly bottom end and little top end. Viper pussed out. I love Mopars AND Buicks so I am kinda split. GN's are more practical and cheaper t get and much better on maintenance and gas. I had a 85 Regal with an 82 T-Type engine.

get your facts straight...... the first vipers were only capable of 160..... it wasnt until the last generation SRT-10 models could MAYBE get to 175mph, and it did so SLOWLY.
Vipers are the worst handling, heaviest sports cars i've ever driven or rode in. Period. Nothing like some lazy beer belly backwood "folk" that built a car that TRIED to look like an italian exotic.
the ACR is a limited production model, somewhere in the range of the hundreds.
Built SPECIFICALLY as a track car so there is some weight reduction compared to the standard SRT10 models. Lots of suspension tweaking, chassis reinforcement, and aero.
LMK what a standard SRT10 does in the Ring and get back to me, then you'll see exactly why I enjoy cars not from the US.
Domestics are typcially heavy, which is why they have to have 300+hp/tq engines.
My dads SRT8 Challenger dynoed 326hp/360tq at the wheels and weighed in at 3800lbs with him in it and can only do a 13.8@104
My FD weighs 2760 with me in it, makes 320hp/290tq at 14psi on the stock twins and i can do a 12.3@115
At the road course, he is 10 seconds slower for the first 5 laps and then i lap him halfway through our 30min sessions, he has 15 years exp, i have 3....
He paid $40k, i paid $12k.
And slightly modded FD's run in the high 7minute range. Mostly susp.
@rotor13 Tell your dad to take his car to the dealer and get it checked out, those dyno numbers are waaay to low, even for a heat soaked engine, that low. SRT8's average around 360-380 rwhp stock and run low 13's to high 12's in the 1/4. I saw one freekish, stock SRT8 300 C with the temp plates still on it run a 12.8 in the 1/4 mile. My car dyno'd at 376 rwhp when it was new and my MSRT8 weighs 4400lbs.
@rotor13 a 3800 pound srt8? with the driver in it? I call bullshit on that one, unless its been lightend. and the 13.8 is really slow unless you are quite abit above sea level.
You guys all think that Gross vehicle weight on paper actually means it weighs that much..... my dad took it to the scales at a track and yes.... a little above 3800, closer to 3900lbs curb weight.
13.8's were the best we could do in the car ATM because it was done in 105*F 90% texas humidity in August.
We DID run a 12.9 later in the year in December where it was an excellent 68*F and very low humudity with some better tires than what the car came with.
@rotor13 those cars are suppost to weigh 4000 without a driver. and it was a close rece with an evo that had more power and alot less weight and AWD? stock evos run low to mid 13's with 290 FLYWHEEL hp, if your buddy had 390, it was probably dynoed on a chassis dyno and had over 450 at the fly. I just dont see how the srt8 would be even remotely close in any race. especially since it only dynoed at 320. 320<390, 4000+<3300
My buddy has an Evo8.... they dyno 230hp at the wheel, equates to 270is hp at the flywheel. And im not talking Flywheel horsepower either..... which is not an indication of USABLE power. He dynoed at 390 at the wheels on a DynoJet Dyno, my dads SRT8 dynoed on the same.
Youre also talking about powerband here.... a typical V8's powerband is more at the low-mid range, where as my buddies Evo has mid-top end. The SRT's only advantage was the longer gear ratio.
@rotor13 Sorry but i dont see gear ration making up for 70 more hp and 700 more pounds, and I dont know where you get that evos have "top end", those cars are AWD and are known for being hard to beat off the line, they are actually alot easier to beat on the top end than they are to beat on the low end.
@rotor13 I think your missing the point, even though its modded, its weak point will still be top end, its AWD, AWD cars tend to slow down on the top end. they are monsters on the low end (dig) because of all wheel drive, power is going to all 4 wheels, which hurts the top end, because on the top end the car is still sending power to the 4 wheels.
so your saying that the powerband on an AWD is always going to be to the left? when his evo's graph is in the mid-top end of the scale?
Your not convincing me... his current setup is nothing but top end power now as of a few weeks ago. I've driven this car with the 50trim when we raced the SRT8 a few years ago, and again when he got his forward facing setup..... car has crazy top end.
@rotor13 now your talking about engine performance, im talking about how the drivetrain setup affects the performance of the car. of coarse the motor is going to make more top end power, its a turbo 4 banger. but the AWD setup allow him to rev it high and dump the clutch, making it rip out of the hole, the trade off for having such good traction is that the power that the motor makes has to be distributed to the 4 wheels. l
But still..... when there is MORE power going to all 4 wheels i still dont see how the AWD WOULDNT pull harder on the top end..... sure it takes a bit more power to get the same feeling of acceleration as a 2wd car, but its all an illusion really.
It really is about ratio, power/weight, power band, parasitic drivetrain loss etc etc..... Im simply saying what exactly the circumstances are that i was barely a fender in front of an Evo
@firechicken76 An example would be if you took an AWD eclipse GSX and an Eclipse GST (FWD) and raced them, same motors, one is Front wheel drive, the other All Whel Drive, The AWD GSX will smoke the GST off the line, but the GST will pull harder on the top end...even though they have the same motor.
The car was quick in its own right, hardly any imports had the guts to race us unless it actually had mods done to it. The best/closest race we had was my buddies Evo8 with just a TBE, I/C, 50trim turbo, and a JMS reflash for 25psi. He dynoed 390ish. We stayed neck and neck until the longer gears of the SRT8 barely edged out in front at around 140 by half a car.

A stock late 90's Viper will get demolished by something that's been built up, and GN's are proven drag cars. A grand national with any sort of engine build will take it out, no question.

13.8's were the best we could do in the car ATM because it was done in 105*F 90% texas humidity in August.
We DID run a 12.9 later in the year in December where it was an excellent 68*F and very low humudity with some better tires than what the car came with.

@rotor13 those cars are suppost to weigh 4000 without a driver. and it was a close rece with an evo that had more power and alot less weight and AWD? stock evos run low to mid 13's with 290 FLYWHEEL hp, if your buddy had 390, it was probably dynoed on a chassis dyno and had over 450 at the fly. I just dont see how the srt8 would be even remotely close in any race. especially since it only dynoed at 320. 320<390, 4000+<3300

My buddy has an Evo8.... they dyno 230hp at the wheel, equates to 270is hp at the flywheel. And im not talking Flywheel horsepower either..... which is not an indication of USABLE power. He dynoed at 390 at the wheels on a DynoJet Dyno, my dads SRT8 dynoed on the same.
Youre also talking about powerband here.... a typical V8's powerband is more at the low-mid range, where as my buddies Evo has mid-top end. The SRT's only advantage was the longer gear ratio.

@rotor13 Sorry but i dont see gear ration making up for 70 more hp and 700 more pounds, and I dont know where you get that evos have "top end", those cars are AWD and are known for being hard to beat off the line, they are actually alot easier to beat on the top end than they are to beat on the low end.

@rotor13 I think your missing the point, even though its modded, its weak point will still be top end, its AWD, AWD cars tend to slow down on the top end. they are monsters on the low end (dig) because of all wheel drive, power is going to all 4 wheels, which hurts the top end, because on the top end the car is still sending power to the 4 wheels.

Your not convincing me... his current setup is nothing but top end power now as of a few weeks ago. I've driven this car with the 50trim when we raced the SRT8 a few years ago, and again when he got his forward facing setup..... car has crazy top end.

@rotor13 now your talking about engine performance, im talking about how the drivetrain setup affects the performance of the car. of coarse the motor is going to make more top end power, its a turbo 4 banger. but the AWD setup allow him to rev it high and dump the clutch, making it rip out of the hole, the trade off for having such good traction is that the power that the motor makes has to be distributed to the 4 wheels. l

But still..... when there is MORE power going to all 4 wheels i still dont see how the AWD WOULDNT pull harder on the top end..... sure it takes a bit more power to get the same feeling of acceleration as a 2wd car, but its all an illusion really.
It really is about ratio, power/weight, power band, parasitic drivetrain loss etc etc..... Im simply saying what exactly the circumstances are that i was barely a fender in front of an Evo

@firechicken76 An example would be if you took an AWD eclipse GSX and an Eclipse GST (FWD) and raced them, same motors, one is Front wheel drive, the other All Whel Drive, The AWD GSX will smoke the GST off the line, but the GST will pull harder on the top end...even though they have the same motor.

The car was quick in its own right, hardly any imports had the guts to race us unless it actually had mods done to it. The best/closest race we had was my buddies Evo8 with just a TBE, I/C, 50trim turbo, and a JMS reflash for 25psi. He dynoed 390ish. We stayed neck and neck until the longer gears of the SRT8 barely edged out in front at around 140 by half a car.

He traded it in for a 2003 Audi RS6. A much better car overall in our opinion.
You cant get a twin turbo V8 with AWD and have so much comfort.
We already put upgraded turbos pushing 25psi on 93, a built transmission, TBE, FMIC with meth injection. Dynoed 576hp/610tq.
And is still comfy as shit to drive and with the great tune gets 26mpg mix driving.
The only things that beat us were Vettes, Vipers and liter bikes

@brandonf86 hey! thats the smartest comment yet. for some reason($) gm wont let any of their cars be faster than a vette.imagine an 87 vette going heads up against an 87 bgn.bgn wins with 2 extra seats,and 2 less pistons.camaros always get the de-tuned vette engines,etc.etc...thankfully the aftermarket guys keep our "lesser cars" on par or better than vettes and even when heavily modified still cost less.i do love vettes but a grand national is more in my price range.

The GN is fast modded, but stock they are not. The GNX was the fastest and went high 12's to very low 13's stock. They are nice cars and I would like to own one, but they won't smoke any viper stock for stock.
