What button are you supposed to press to avoid the hand swipe? If I do down + X, all it does is his hand will just go lower then. So am I supposed to be doing something other than direction + X?

When you dodge him smacking his knee on the very first window thing you break, how do you climb up to hand? I hit R2 like crazy, even jumping up right next to his hand.
