Sorry, i have to make a correction, the All Star cafe closed and re opened as Planet Hollywood. I visited PH around 2005 and that's when i saw the subway car prop that King Kong picked up and threw down.
I have a picture of it somewhere and i'll post it on my FB page when i find it. Not pumping my page, just thought some people would be interested in seeing it, for me it was a thrill to see the actual prop just hanging there inconspicuously in some tourist trap restaurant.
I'm not saying this is the best version because i enjoy all three but this one affected the doomed love story angle better than the other two and that's the real heart of the King Kong tale . Fantastic and underappreciated film with great acting, music, miniatures and visual effects.
Just a bit of random trivia, there was a place called the All Star Cafe in midtown Manhattan in the 90s that had the subway car miniature hanging from the ceiling. They closed and i don't know what happened to it.
I had the most profound emotional attachment to this version of the big Ape.
The original is untouchable but Kong was a pure stop motion monster, PJ's version was an unidentifiable cgi creation, there is something about this version of Kong that gives it a humanistic aura and thereby makes his fate profound and tragic.
Ask yourself this, who do you root for out of all three versions of Kong to survive, i cried when Kong gets killed in this version
The original came off like a horror movie which was fine in 1933. In fact I've always Grouped kong in with dracula and wolfman. I then saw the 1976 Version and I fell in love with it. I bought the music soundtrack. I thought the performances were top notch. I thought the snake scene was pretty good. When kong gets to new york, Thats where the FX gets bad. The big kong reveal was a testament about how bad things can look. I Still love this movie and freely defend what it was in 1976.
i watched it as its own film that was pretty hard. but i thought the dude made the movie decent. look at it this way its better than son of Kong ( witch sucked so much ass its not even funny.)
@mortalcombat312 look i will admit the movie did drag and when we finally see kong it is disappointing but at least it wasn't boring like son of kong. also there is no way this film could have even matched to original. the original was great in every aspect. but i could call this movie one of my few guilty pleasures
@darthbriboy whoops i was talking to the wrong guy but son of kong is rare and most people dont know it. i was supposed talking to the guy above ur comment
I used to trash this remake for being too different from the original. But honestly, I don't really give a shit anymore. In fact, I like how they tried to be original. The 2005 remake was okay, but was way too slow paced and got boring. So I agree that this movie's good. Not nearly as good as the original, but still a classic.
@showho: I also feel this remake, flaws and all, is better than Peter Jackson's poor excuse for an "homage" to the '33 classic. I used to hate it with a passion, but retracted much of my disdain after seeing the ridiculously overblown, pretentious '05 opus. At least it offered a different premise and didn't simply copy the original. I think popular opinion is shifting and more people are finding that KONG '76 is worth re-evaluating and that Peter Jackson's version is really quite perfuntory.
t's so hilarious how people love to rag on this movie. As if they've forgotten what an amazing benchmark it is in the history of movie making. Despite the obvious 'let down' of the 40 million dollar Kong robot which is only on screen for maybe 8 seconds, (which in itself is HILARIOUSLY bench-mark personifying what an amazing, EXCESSIVE era this was for filmmakers.) Anything went, and did! Even now people will sit through this, yet not necessarily through Peter Jackson's 3 hour long CGI fest
Great review, and i agree with everything you said. This version wipes the floor with the recent remake. It's emotionally powerful. I just can't get into a cgi version, the set design and visual fx are more organic in this version and the central themes of impossible love, loss and exploitation resonate more than they did in either the original or the 2005 offering.
LOL You're Arnie made me laugh!!! and you are right KK 76 is a good film despite its short comings. It is a 1000X better than that piece of junk Peter Jackson made
@leuk123 No it isnt i think... movie was to long and get boring because u dont see kong for the first hour.. en after that it doesnt get any better ... like Kong is iceskating in that movie ,.... COMON !!
@TheDifferentReview Yes it was better, the build up was great, i really felt something for Kong, i almost never have something like that for a made up character.
i thought this version was ok but has nothing on the original or the other remake

@thesanderson09 it tainted king kong badly. without 2005 to save it king kong would be much less popular.
