The Band fell apart for a lot of reasons, but I think Robertson always had one eye on the publishing. Levon and the rest of the guys got pushed out financially. The fact that they made a serious effort to equal their first two albums was heroic but futile. Most authors have only one good book. Lawyers, drugs, alcohol, women, and money tore apart their bond. At least you can say they went out on top.

there's more to that Last Waltz story of Levon getting the short end of the deal then he put in his book. Without Robbie's friendship with Martin Scorsese, the film would never have been made. Robbie did most of the editing and some producing of the film. Granted he did get more then Levon but he didn't rob him. I love both of them, Met Levon & his daughter up in Woodstock. As you know he's very ill but many people came to his aid financially when he needed it. I wish both nothing but the best .

Time seems to have stolen some of Robbie's (considerable) guitar playing prowess from him....guess that's just the way life is....not that he couldn't still play circles around me.

Big fan of the Band and I think Robbie's solo stuff is great. For me he's done enough to earn the right to sing on his own records. The voice doesn't need to be great to make a good record. Listen to Dylan, Nick Drake or Tom Waits. They're not exactly operatic but the voices are perfect for their music.
