He had a lot to say. He had a lot of nothing to say. We'll miss him. We're going to miss him. It's, so long. We wish you well. You told us how you weren't afraid to die. Well then, so long. Don't cry. Or feel too down. Not all martyrs see divinity. But at least you tried. Standing above the crowd, He had a voice that was strong and loud. We'll miss him. Ranting and pointing his finger At everything but his heart. We'll miss him. TOOL - Eulogy. About Bill Hicks. I miss you so much, Hitch
What this guy says about religion can be said about politics and love and any other human need. We need to undersand that religin is a human need. Deniying this need is stupid and harmful.
I don't wish the death of anyone; but now that Christopher Hitchens is dead I can celebrate the fact there is one less mouth talking bullshit from an inflated ego.
I feel like Atheists impose there thoughts or beliefs more than Christians do which is sad because Christians are supposed to go out and make Disciples. Yet here is this man writing a book to a mass public imposing his will yes his will on people and in this book he is making fun of people for imposing there will on other people... flawed?
@22Bunique If you don't want to be imposed upon don't read the book. It's quite different than pushing to have prayer in school, banning gay marriage and telling anyone who doesn't agree with you that they're going to burn in a place where amazingly enough exists a zone of no forgiveness. This is IN SPITE of the fact they they tout an "All Forgiving, All Loving" God. The hypocrisy and self-contradictory nature of the book itself is enough to convince me that it's a sham, nothing more.
@22Bunique Your view is flawed, yes. If you think Atheists writing a dozen or so books compared at all to the vast majority of the world being religious and having all their texts, sermons, speeches and papers on the subject, and imposing their will on laws in nearly every country, then you're a complete moron.
So sad to see Hitch is gone so early in his life, but at least these vids and recordings will exist as long as free human society exists. Kinda odd Jesus or other godly profits after waiting 100,000 years could not have waited another say 2000 to be recorded in such a way. It would have made their message much more powerfull or easy to dismiss. Go Hitch!
All of this , and if he is right , not as much as an " I told you so " to look forward to . Frankly I dont know why athiests bang on about there being no God , seems like a hell of a waste of their very limited existence , to spend so much of it talking about something they dont believe in , better to crack on with something else , and all will be revealed to them in due course ..........or not if that is the case !
I wouldn't harp about religion if its adherents weren't constantly trying to legislate their morality, and impose their beliefs on others.
Also if didn't believe that religion and faith themselves weren't detrimental to the entire species. Especially when the age old battle for the holy lands may well start WWIII and destroy the entire species.
So NO! It is certainly not a waste of my time, or anyone else's to promote reason and sanity.
we 'bangon' about it becuase you god bothers keep trying to foce your rubbish on us and on our kids. Keep your rubbish in your church it has no place any were else.
Hitchens maintained until the day he died that he would convert to any of the religions, provided he was given proof of the existence of its god. Not one of the billions of religious people in the world today could provide him with this proof. Not one.
@19640124555 Wikipedia: Hitchens has written of his homosexual experiences when in boarding school in his memoir, "Hitch-22." These experiences continued in his college years when he allegedly had relationships with two men who eventually became a part of the Thatcher government.
Was sodomite Christ' Hitchens' hollow death an early Christmas gift, or retribution for the total-war that he endorsed against the mothers & children of the Arab sphere?
@TheWorldFarOff I have a gay son, so I am used to people like you condemning people like him. I personally abhor all forms of violence, but it doesn't mean I can't agree with the more intellectual musing of any particular person. The beauty of not being locked into an outdated system is that you get to think for yourself and choose to be good and tolerant without the threat of a hell or a promise of a heaven or other fairy tales. Loosen those shackles and shake religion off - be free.
This is very hypocrite about you creationist.Christ never harm anyone, he just spoke what on hes mind (something that isn't very preach in creationist believes) here are you cursing a dead person to burn in hell and laughing insane that hes dead.
Even thought hell is very dumb it still not nice and goes again what you preach sow much unless your a west born baptist. But if your not then what happen with your morals that you seem to view as Humanitarian, as a guide for peace?.
It's funny, without slagging of this show, how Hitchens vocabulary and way of speaking seems so much more adult and mature than any of these shows. Especially how Hitchens never laughed, just gave a winky smile...
the threats of hell are only as meaningful as they are to the person making them. I don't quite understand how someone could ignore such an obvious fallacy. Please show me how hell exists, or why on no evidence for it how its ok for good people to go there.
@Johnf85 The issue here is what is justice? When it comes to hell, spiritual judgment, or even punishment in the secular realm, such as in government, we must understand what justice is. What is good, how do we know someone is good enough, and vice versa, when someone is bad enough? So how do you, or we as people, determine what is bad or good enough to deserve reward, punishment, or neutrality?
@jensenc86 There universe has no part in morality. There is no cosmic justice, rewards, or punishment. Humans, however, have the brain power (pre-frontal cortex) necessary to logically conclude what maximizes human well being, and behave and punish according. The divine instructions provided by "god" are immoral and unethical. Condemning gays, stoning people who work on the sabbath, slavery, etc. This causes good people to do BAD THINGS and is an example of failed ethical / cultural relativism.
@Johnf85 You stated a lot of information, in which I never necessarily questioned in my statement, and did not answer my question of how we determine what is deserving of punishment or reward in any sense? How do we determine that for humans, for God, for anyone when judging their actions?
@jensenc86 Excuse me? I'll repeat the answer to your question: Humans have the brain power (pre-frontal cortex) necessary to logically conclude what maximizes human well being, and behave and punish / reward according.
@Johnf85 Yes I understood that much, but I was looking for a little more depth. Obviously many people disagree on what is moral/ethical or just. So how do we use our pre-frontal cortex/brain power to decide these things? What is the process like. The way you explained it is as if I asked "how you hit a baseball?" and you say, "you use your arms." It is true, but lacking direction and substance, but of course I am not saying you don't have those, but merely left them out.
@jensenc86 Your example is quite off. Hitting a baseball is not abstract, and can be researched and understood at the level of the brain. But will you? Because you have been asking me enough questions, to where I have to conclude that you think I am either your personal librarian, or you are the type of person that does not take the time to learn, especially regarding the oppositions argument. If the bible was never written, we would behave according to our innate social contract propensities.
@Johnf85 Well, if you want to take my illustration really far, then yes, you can do that. It was simply to make a small point that saying we use our brain to decide is not a very good explanation. Of course we use our brain for that, just like we use our brain for everything we do. I enjoy learning and try to learn as much as I can with the resources I have. One reason why I was curious to what you thought about justice and determining morality.
@jensenc86 I gave you an explanation, and it wasnt just that we use our brain. I told you that human well being is a physical spectrum, to which we gauge types of behavior responses; neutrality, punishment, reward (your examples). Research Sam Harris for the granular neuroscience info.......You know, I'm not trying to be mean here, but you really come off like a young teenager with a learning disability... I've never seen anyone so inadequately summarize my arguments before, quite like you did.

Rubbish. You are in the most part a bunch of fucking assholes.
I believe in God, but I am openly critical of many of the adherents.
The great philosopher Bertrand Russell once said that if he died and discovered that God was real, he would tell him "I'm sorry, but you never gave me enough reason to believe in you."
If God by very definition is perfect, then isn't he by definition reasonable, too? If God truly is God, he understands.
I don't presume to know death, but I can't see a loving God sending people like Hitchens and Russell to hell.
@BasilFawlty4444 Why believe in God at all? It's only fair that you are free to believe what you want too, but surly you must find the evidence against any kind of deity overwhelming? Just asking ...
@TheDolefish Obviously not everyone is finding the evidence overwhelming, since at least a billion people believe in God and even more in gods. Is it possible that belief is not a burden or barrier, but could actually be freeing in many ways? There appears to be an overwhelming assumption that belief in God is detrimental and/or pathological in some sense. I believe in God and it has given my life purpose, meaning, and hope.

I'm not rejoicing because he's in hell, I'm saying, get on the right path now instead of his path. He spewed for cancer and bile towards Christians, women, entire races of people and even God. The same cancer took over his body.
Life is spiritual, it's not a coincidence. Get on the right path NOW!
@zander550 If you 'give' someone free will it isn't even free will. Free will is: The power of acting without the constraint of necessity or fate; the ability to act at one's own discretion. The simple act of being 'given' free will would break the definition right from the beginning.
free will is basically an illusion in the sense of it being free from the restraints of biology in the physical world. it wasn't "given", its simply the illusion of an evolved organism. we're biological machinery and our consciousness is the product of unconscious nuerological activity that operates through an input/output calculus that takes external and internal biological stimuli and perpetuates its existence within an evolved system of predetermined possibilities.
@JahJah920 listen this goes out to everyone, i should have just left this alone.my opinion is my opinion and your opinion is rightfully yours and i truly did not mean to cause a stir.i apologize.
@WetOMalcreadiitO Christians are pretty sick, you dare call us immoral? When you find the idea that human beings will be suffering excrutating torture and pain for an eternity funny.
The worst religion in the world is meism or selfishness. It can hide in any religion or non religion. The Arrogance of little man is amazing."look at me and my words I'm so smart".
If you find it funny that Christopher is in hell now, you will fit in very nicely with the god of the bible who commanded rape, murder, infanticide, theft, torture and many other horrible things.
I am very concerned for everybody who lives close to you.
On the video:
I sincerely hope that mankind will not forget you or your message Christopher.

@WetOMalcreadiitO Well if hell does exist, (and it doesn't), you'l be going there for saying this. I love that because people are extremist religious lunatics they think they'l automatically go to heaven even if they are an absolute prick to everyone else because they don't agree with their view. You need to learn some respect.
@WetOMalcreadiitO Hell was an invention and was inserted into the texts. As was satan. One day a few high priests were trying to figure out a good way to prevent people from losing faith.
"What about we tell them they will burn forever under the earth, unless they follow every rule?"
"Lets put some evil entity in charge of it"
"We could use the word that we normally use for adversary - satan, these dumb fucks wont figure it out because they can't read!"
A man who, despite his political preferences, was of stern independence. Hitchens perceived things as they were. He did not yield to the popular view, nor did his criticisms arise from ignorance, but from consideration. The man was an intellectual ruled by logic and reason. R.I.P. Christopher, you will be missed.
I have the book God is not Great. I am a Christian, but a friend of mine decided to give it to me for Christmas once as a joke... but the book is a joke. I'm not even saying that because obviously the main idea of the book goes against my beliefs, it's just rediculous in how it's written, etc. It's nothing more then pretentious verbal diahrea!
@joncoish ...........Posted, Ladies and Gentlemen, to show us how smart he is. Sorry, Pal; I can't take your statement with any degree of seriousness, as you incorrectly spelled at least 2 elementary words in your pathetic diatribe; A diatribe intended to undermine the writings and intellect of one of the greatest minds humanity has ever known. That alone negates any argument you may have had. Just keep reading your 2,000 year old book of fairy tales transcribed by illiterate desert herdsmen.
@joncoish Thanks for sparing me from buying it. I think you meant typographical diahrea!
La trahison des clercs! Translated: `The treachery of the intellectuals`. Julian Benda
All these WOULD be intellectuals, (Ex. xomiakas` comment, delivered with such eloquence) crawling out of their `enlightenment` for a moment, paying homage to a `cat`who gave the impression he knew it all. Hitchens was `right`; dead `right`.
@WetOMalcreadiitO Bullshit, kid, hell doesn;t exist, christianity is bUUUUUUUUlshit and you can;t prove us otherwise. Hitch was never defeated when he said this and he took it to the grave. His victory is final. And you, my dear bigot, would be going to hell too, by christian standards.Remember, you can;t judge, let alone be happy about someone roasting in hell.YOURE going to hell :D you fucking better repent your bitch ass, u cunt. And again, these is no god, grow the fuck up, you stupid bitch.
@WetOMalcreadiitO to assume you are a religious person, who is suppose to believe in peace in humanity and good moral values to be closer to your heavenly father, that is a terrible thing to say to any person especially one who understood more than you where by accepting the answers to why and how, one could better understand how we are. But to celebrate a death of a man who showed progress in the ideas in which we are trying to better understand is just a low blow dick move.
Pleasantly surprised at how few vultures there are among the posts. When Carlin died.the so called "christians" flocked from all parts to pick a his bones, but then YouTube was in full swing back then. Good to see anyone remembered well, especially those who simply tried to challenge logical fallacy.
You will be taken to hell, now know the truth, nor your atheism will save you! son of the devil suffers in place there will be more room for people like you who does not believe in Christ.
Thankyou for all the wisdom you imparted in your lectures, books, political activities and on television. Many people have progressed in this world as a result of your intellect. Life is there and then it goes away, some of us younger and some older. Love from New Zealand
@morpheusxnyc You may be right, but just about every time I saw him on tv he seemed to be insulting and putting down anyone with a different view from his...
@joncoish - Well, you didn't think they invited him on the show to AGREE with the other person, did you? lol... Naturally, they booked him because he had a sharp, well researched opinion that was contrary to the other person on the stage.
And also, he's known for being sharp tongued about things he saw were disingenuous, ignorant or hypocritical and he didn't hide his scorn for those viewpoints.
He could disagree respectfully, but he felt too much stupidity is already given too much respect.
@morpheusxnyc I think he`d object. Rest in Peace is a RELIGIOUS expression. Perhaps an evolutionary/atheistic expression would be more suitable. I can think of a couple.
@comanche66100 - Very true. I was torn about using it. So many phrases have entered into our idiom from religion that it takes some active thought to find naturalistic substitutes.
I've ever heard Richard Dawkins say, "Oh, my God" on occasion. lol..
It means nothing, of course. It's no more proof of God or the supernatural than saying "Holy shit", but it does reinforce the religious perspective for framing life and death, so I would be grateful if you could provide an alternative expression. :-)
I got an advert about being religious and using science.. screw this world

@Andy152R well at least ill have you for a guideline =)
zander550 2 weeks ago
@zander550 If you 'give' someone free will it isn't even free will. Free will is: The power of acting without the constraint of necessity or fate; the ability to act at one's own discretion. The simple act of being 'given' free will would break the definition right from the beginning.
BringAShovel 2 weeks ago
@zander550 Maybe Santa gave us free will? Or Harry Potter? Or any number of your imaginary friends?
publicanimal9 1 week ago
@zander550
free will is basically an illusion in the sense of it being free from the restraints of biology in the physical world. it wasn't "given", its simply the illusion of an evolved organism. we're biological machinery and our consciousness is the product of unconscious nuerological activity that operates through an input/output calculus that takes external and internal biological stimuli and perpetuates its existence within an evolved system of predetermined possibilities.

@WetOMalcreadiitO Well if hell does exist, (and it doesn't), you'l be going there for saying this.
Hell is an add-on.

I have the book God is not Great. I am a Christian, but a friend of mine decided to give it to me for Christmas once as a joke... but the book is a joke. I'm not even saying that because obviously the main idea of the book goes against my beliefs, it's just rediculous in how it's written, etc. It's nothing more then pretentious verbal diahrea!
joncoish 1 month ago
@joncoish ...........Posted, Ladies and Gentlemen, to show us how smart he is. Sorry, Pal; I can't take your statement with any degree of seriousness, as you incorrectly spelled at least 2 elementary words in your pathetic diatribe; A diatribe intended to undermine the writings and intellect of one of the greatest minds humanity has ever known. That alone negates any argument you may have had. Just keep reading your 2,000 year old book of fairy tales transcribed by illiterate desert herdsmen.

I can think of a couple.
comanche66100 1 month ago
@comanche66100 - Very true. I was torn about using it. So many phrases have entered into our idiom from religion that it takes some active thought to find naturalistic substitutes.
I've ever heard Richard Dawkins say, "Oh, my God" on occasion. lol..
It means nothing, of course. It's no more proof of God or the supernatural than saying "Holy shit", but it does reinforce the religious perspective for framing life and death, so I would be grateful if you could provide an alternative expression. :-)
