I saw in a documentary about Gould that (in his own words) 'by the age of 10 years old he had the entire first book of the Well Tempered Clavier under his belt.' His mother played piano music to him while he was in the womb and started him on the piano practically as soon as he came out. He said he could read music before words.
This is delightful -- charming, persuasive, unusual, full of insight. I find myself agreeing almost completely with Orannis.
Gould played with "attitude." so does Lang Lang -- in a completely different way. Both take a lot of flack for it -- most of it undeserved.
ALL performers should identify so closely with the music s these fellows. Greatness is never achieved by a mere following of "the rules." At the same time one must be aware of the rules in order to know HOW to break them.

At one time jerky and sedate, this might be the worst Scarlatti execution I have ever heard from a professional. As usual, Gould butchers the melody in an attempt at being original or, possibly, at pleasing the jazz crowds.
Oh please. Gould's playing was always highly eccentric, to the point of being historically unfaithful, but it was at the same time full of life and fire and beauty, and profound musical expression. I would rather hear his wild interpretations any day than the same boring, "appropriate" playing we hear all the time from more conscientious pianists.
Brilliant, I had forgotten how brilliant Scarlatti is. Glenn is a natural Scarlatti player, he plays it as it should be played, far ahead of his time Scarlatti was and Glenn shows us why.

Indeed a musical genius.

Genius of Gould is in his supernatural sense of every piece of music. He understood the same idea, the individual character of every one.

I find him really sexy in his youth.

Bach, Scarlatti, Berg, Schumann. God, I miss Glenn Gould. What a brilliant man. He burned too bright for too short a time.
