  • I suggest doing staccatos light and near the middle of the bow. Great job

  • for my opinion, your notes are sometimes low and too high, I suggest that you should consult a private teacher because self learning is not effective in such instrument. it'll be better if you really have a private teacher :)

  • Get your arm away from your chest and straighten your posture other wise you are amazing for learning by self lessons.

  • YOU ARE SIMPLY AWESOME!!~~~!~! :))

  • whats the brand of your violin? i need to buy one and have no idea of what to get... i cant afford anything very expensive... so something good at a reasonable preice if you have suggestions

  • @pinkhotgirl

look up KK music store on the internet, $100 for a beginner is pretty good price for everything you get.

  • ur really good :D just straighten ur posture a little bit bt besides that u sound really good! :D

  • as long as u keep calm u'll be fine.i've benn playing the violin for two years now and ur better than i thought. u have talent! use that to keep u going.><

  • wow I'm self teaching too~ its only been about 2 months and I practice every day for a good couple of hours. Hope I'm that good when i get to 5 months :) I need to practice vibrato >:/

  • GrEaT!!!!!

  • i can play gavotte (that) in violin! but im not too good!!!!!!

  • I love how you self taught ! This is very inspiring for me, ive always wanted to learn how to play the violin and with me being homeschooled I have plenty of time to put in practice .... Just hope I don't annoy my family :/ lol

  • I like the tempo, speed (some vids i saw was too slow or too fast... yours was just right though i guess it could be more just by 1 tempo.. probably) Mistakes were alot. But Over all Could've been more perfect :)

  • Ur arm is wrong.... ehehehhe but sound ok...

  • Without a teacher... you tend to do a lot of mistake... If u r playing for fun.. then it's ok...

  • Really good job! I'm 22 and I've been playing violin for a couple of months now, and your playing is truly inspiring. It makes me realise it IS possible to learn to play violin as an adult and even without a teacher, and it's a lot more impressive than those kids doing it. Keep up the good work, show the world it can be done!

  • Wow,very good.

    I speaking spanish:

Muy bien el video aunque lleves 5 meses esta bastante bien tienes mucha suerte yo quisiera tocarlo pero no puede se.Animo

  • eu adoro essa musica apesar na minha opinião e mais chata de se aprender no violino

  • everyone who sees this video should go to Raywilliamjohnsons channel on you tube! he is the best, i hope you hear this, im trying to get him more fans! :D ok thanks!

  • @gigsters42 Fuck raywilliamjohnson.

  • oh and also i bet your alot better now and i would also like to say that you should play more closer to the bridge, ok, thanks! oh and also,

  • very good, i would like to say though you need to hold your violin up a little higher, oh and practice practice practice!, i practice everyday ecept for saturdays :D. oh and i would like to say that i am better than you and i am olmost 13, lol! no insult intended.

  • very nice.....

  • Esta es mi cancion favorita. xD

    Gracias

  • Really good! Quite inspirationgal ....keep the videos coming. Congrats!!

  • you're the epitome of what i'm trying to be... i'm also self-studying the violin...

  • Some tips: Look where your bow is, it was pretty close to the fingerboard it sound be over the 'f' holes. Your left elbow is way too close to your body and your right elbow look too far away (I can't tell, it might be fine but your left elbow is definitely too close). Holding up your violin sound solve that problem or having the music at head level so you're not looking down.

For only playing 5 months this is pretty damn good! :D I'm assuming you've played other instruments? Keep up the work!

  • Hey great job I loved it! I have been playing the violin self teaching for maybe a week or two. So any advice and what is vibrato and staccato? I don't even know notes yet! But I love the violin so I will learn! This is a piece I really want to learn!

  • Ah, this video brings back memories of school. You make me want to pick of the violin again.

  • This is my favourite performance of this piece to be found on youtube--thank you very much! More Suzuki pieces would be great to see!

  • wow thats really good. now Its one of my favorite pieces to:)

  • hmm.. for the stacatto, u don't need to bow it.. it should be short.. (play-lift).. but I just know this.. XD say, can u find this book on the net?

  • hmm.. for the stacatto, u don't need to bow it.. it should be short.. (play-lift).. but I just know this.. XD say, can u find this book on the net?

  • i have been teaching myself for about 3 weeks and i can play this just a lot slooooowwwwer. and i cant do staccato or vibrato.

  • wow u taught urself this in 5 months i am learning how to play to i am on this song to on the same book but i have lessons and i have been playing it for over a year

  • this is my one of my favorite songs! im still on book one, and my teacher is teaching me a fiddle piece right now but there's no way I'm going to pass up learning this song :) and for 5 months your really good!

  • have you played something before? possibly a string instrument? awesome playing for 5 months, generally takes years to get this good!

    goodjob

  • i'd like to get sheet music for this... cuz i have a different one but its short ... it stops about wher u stop at 1:04

  • Omygosh. You're so good! I mean for someone who only learned by himself, really you're amazing!

  • since when was there pizzicato (plucking) in this piece? anyway keep it up and be more confident, if you're nervous, the sound that will come out will be like a screeching cat

  • i luv the violin! good job

  • awesome..;p

  • hey how to play the staccato part of this song?

  • Whatt?! Only five months?! You're good!!! I wanna learn this song very badly! Where did u get the book? :)

  • yeah i would also say word on ur posture i know my teacher gets on us for that and try workin on ur dynamics........as for staccato ur more bouncy then short make then short and crisp

  • Hold shit dude. Keep it up.

  • We have the same book

And i just bought mu violin yesterday! Wohooo i wana be

Like you! I like gavotte a lot

  • Hi. I think that you are great for self teaching and have only doing it for five months. Good job! Keep it up. =D

  • i like that very nice

  • i just learned this song. wow your good

  • GOOD! My favorite song from Susuki n_n

  • wow ur really good

  • bravo it's really good am on this peice to but am having troubles. on the slurs

  • wow , you have thought yourself for only 5 months!? this is too good .

  • What brand and model violin are you using? It sounds great for just beginning.

  • Also, if this is a passion for you, invest in a music stand, and not one of the crappy folding ones :) In looking down at your music, it ruins the nice set up you have going on. The stand should be eye height so your chin and, subsequently, your instrument, should be parallel to the floor. Bow hold and left wrist (perpendicular to the floor) looks great. Keep on working you have a very good start :)

  • *been playing for almost 20 years...*

Not bad at all. The staccato you are attempting to use is a more advanced technique called "flying staccato" or more accurately "spiccato." At this stage in your development this is not necessary. Practice the staccato with your bow always in contact with the string, making each stop clear and crisp. (see next comment as well)

  • nice bow hold !!! 5 months,sweet ! (: nice pizz .

  • nice im buying a violin and going that the first song im going to lern

  • woah very nice... im teaching myself too for 5 months but still i cant play gavotte continously... i think i have to work harder to catch up with you.. keep up the good work and gud luck

  • ive been playing fo 5 years n ur kinda better than me.haha.good job:)

  • your left arm should be much higher... but... omg im going to cry couse you are learnig 5 months and you really can play it... better than me, Im playig 4th year at school... of course there are mistakes..but its becouse u dont have a teacher... Im jaleous.. :| nice work. pozdro z polski :D ha :P

  • where did u find the book???

  • play the staccato higher up the bow! in the top half!

  • Relax your bowing wrist it's tooo stiff...if you don't you'll get a stiff sound during the legato parts of the song...:) Great job!!!

  • the tune's a little bit (1.5%) off

  • you need longer bow

  • u'r pretty good just doing vibrato in 5 months?! woow..i'm learning violin for 1 month and 7 days, still learning vibrato..hope i can do that..keep it up!

  • Hey, i began to play this after 5 months too ^^

My opinion is, you're doing quite good with your staccato, but i suggest you try to lower your bow and dont give it much pressure. That's how i roll :D

By the way, love you vibrato ^^ I only mastered the vibrato after about 1.5 yrs :D

  • here's my comment: keep up the good work!

  • haha...now i'm on suzuki violin vol 3, yet i still practice back on this song often...this song is kinda catchy....yup, you're playing very well for a 5mths...

  • Vibrato??? After only 5 MONTHS!!!! I've been playing for almost 10 years and vibrato is still my toughest challenge!

  • u missed a ritardo

  • dang u nice =D

  • Beau travail!

  • You have good skills, but I think that you completely misunderstood the mood and feeling of this piece, try listening this piece to professionals.

  • Hi! I'm also learning this piece. Please explain what you mean by "misunderstood the mood and feeling of this piece".

  • Have confidence, and when it comes to 0:18- 0:20, try to make them loud but as short as possible.

In 0:22 - 0:28, the crotchets are too long, and graceful, it should be staccato and detached.

  • It's supposed have a nice, happy and jumpy feeling to it. His is too blah.

  • make sure your vibrato is not TOO "warrbely" and on the high notes let it ring sweetly. And have some fun with it! you are pretty good for only 5 months.

  • Wow that is cool! You also learned vibrato yourself. Cool.

  • Good job for 5 month by your self. When I play I find it help full to use a stand if your not. If you do try rising it, I find it help full with posture. (Unless you were looking at the fingering. Then you might want to get it taped.

  • wow your awesome this really gave me courage because I'm going to start playing the violin too although i'm already 15 year old but I want to play the violin just because i like it but my parents hated it so i've only convinced them them now to let me learn to play the violin so thank you verry much for posting this vid and keep it up im sure you'll become a great violonist if you want ^_~

  • hey man, i am 23 and have been playing the violin for 3 months, im just learning this song. I love the violin. Its never to late to start

  • you be more happyer..hmm how about more Happier. And if he is having fun thats all that matters, I would say to him, getting a teacher usually helps with everything.

  • that was sooo awesome....!! =D

  • I wouldn't use brush stroke... Just seperate the notes more. I didn't really like you approach to sticatto. don't lift the boy either. but your really good. So keep it up!

  • did u play this my ear or did u have the music sheet?

  • i luv this song idk Y but it makez me cheerfull XD

  • Where/How did you learn the vibrato?

  • practice practice practice

  • hello sir, I could send parituras of the Gavotte is that I want to learn to play violin in it? would be an honor for me

  • YOU ARE F..KIN GOOD AT VIOLIN

  • Well done - your bow arm looks great. You might want to reexamine the music one more time. (In the first part you are playing some notes staccato - e.g., sequence: D1, D3, A1 which should not be). You might also try experimenting more with loud/soft, large/small strokes, brash/gentle to see how that feels and sounds.

  • all i would say is try with your vibrato not to shake ur whole wrist as it makes aslightly eratic tone, just instead try and pivot on your finger to give a wider, broader tone

    well done !

  • this piece is not too hard....just let that bow GOOOOOOOOOOOO....and the more u practice...the less afraid u are from ur instrument!!...

  • Please can someone tell me if this is a hard piece to play???

I want the sheet but i cant find it....

    plase help me xD!

  • i put up my kids violin lesson practices for her distant family to see. its extremely basic stuff. it may or may not be helpful for you.

  • You know, I was learning violin by myself too, and was getting quite discouraged, 'cos friends and family kept telling me that I couldn't do it. This really put me right back into track. :D thanks.

  • dont listen to them!!hahaha

just get a good teacher to teach u some GOOD basic skills so u don't go on for YEARS learning bad habits.....and then just practice eeeeveryday for 2 hours ...

then u WILL eventually get good at it

  • Bravo

  • its okay but some of it is out of tone..haha

  • i'm only 11 and I think you are amazing by self learning and only 5 MONTHS!!! The only advice I have for you and I hope you'll take it from an 11 year old is use the middle of your bow and stay closer to the bridge, not the fingerboard. You'll see how much better it will be!

  • Self learning is not easy. But that is really good for self learning

  • like someone said, spiccato is supposed to work by itself. you start and then the bow's natural flexibility should carry you through. forcing it will make it harder to play it right when you have to play faster stuff. Itzhak Perlman playing the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto uses spiccato now and you can tell he doesn't force it.

  • that sounded nice considering it was self thaught. you should take lessons. you might be the next mozart.

  • I'm buying a violin. I sure hope i can teach myself to play like this :)

  • Wow Your Great!

  • Great work! I am thoroughly impressed, considering you're self taught! Definitely keep up the good work!

A suggestions if you would like :)

Practicing Vibrato: It appears your vibrato is developing very well already after 5 months. Make sure your hand and fingers are relaxed, and it will greatly improve! Practice on one note, with a metronome on about 50-60 bpm. Start by doing 1 pulsation of your wrist/arm per beat and increase up to 6 as you feel confident. Stay loose, no tension allowed ;)

  • Awsome!! really good and totally amirable. Ur a complete genius! Keep on playin. U have talent unlike me ^_^

  • i am a non self teaching violin player but you even play it better than iam .....

    what a shame for me.........T T

  • you're my inspiration to keep on trying to learn the violin without teachers ehehe

    what violin is that?

  • thats really good!

  • hey great job. the way that you used spiccato during the song was great. i couldn't have done it when i played that song =]

if i had one thing to point out that you could improve is your vibrato. Its not a major concern since you could wait a bit and not learn it and still be fine. But try not using your wrist so much. my teacher says its much better if it is vibrated through the arm. try keeping the wrist stiff while your arm moves.

  • Yeah I started off learning wrist vibrato but have since started working on arm... and what a pain it is to learn.

Ah, spiccato... I've seen the term but never realized its a bow technique. Anyways, thanks for the input!

  • this is really inspirational. You could play this after 5 months??? Vibrato AND staccato? Wow. Which is harder between vibrato and staccato?

  • Definitely vibrato! Although, here, its not hard to do it this badly, haha.

  • I actually self taught myself this piece before I started takings lessons too! same here. I got the passion for classical music once again. I have piano background but stop learning at gr6, I have my reasons. So I picked up the violin. Love the sound of it. And I did learned from Ben Chan and Professor V too! Cheers

  • Awesome, violin is the best!

I'm soon to be looking for a teacher, I generally ask the people I see, you know busking in the street. Not many agree but some have the pacience for a bit and you can look them up ocationally and you know you're safe because you're always in a public place!

I'm a little stuck but I'm sure I'll get through it with a little more practice! (Also self-taught!)

I hope you master it before long!

My favourite has always been folk music though! =D

  • Hey cool!!!

Ive been playing that since January but yours is waaaay far better. I'm in the eighth piece in Suzuki 2 but since I'm also self-taught (great big thanks to professor V) I skip practicing songs which i find hard and one of them is Gossec's Gavotte.

I'll be more behaved with my practicing now--thanks to you!

  • Awesome, A fellow self-student!

This is my favorite sounding piece so far in Suzuki so I couldn't pass up trying to learn it. Yes, its very difficult and I didn't play it anywhere near where I want to sound despite long hours of practice.

I don't know if you have the Suzuki CDs (or mp3s), but it really helps to hear how the piece is supposed to sound while practicing it (or search for good youtube videos of the piece).

  • I do have the mp3s but i listened to it too much one time so now I rarely listen to them (my bad, my bad)

Anyway, i'm improving! I tried removing my shoulder rest even if I've a very slight physique & that gave me a nicer tone.

I copied violinist Lucia Micarelli's manner of holding the violin without hunching my left shoulder so it was also comfortable.

Also, I followed the sheet music's suggestion to keep your 1st finger down during the 16th note bits & that helped a great deal.

  • take the bow down a wee bit closer to the bridge but not to much. supposedly theres 7 bow widths from the neck to the bridge.

  • Thanks to everyone!

I practiced A LOT per day, some weekends 4-5 hrs, shows how much I'm loving the violin.

However, having no teacher is VERY tough. I am retracing my steps a little and trying to learn left hand posture correctly which is screwing my tone, have to relearn muscle memory.

Also I am trying to practice arm vibrato as I've heard (Ben Chan) it is used more than wrist... again very difficult as my arm spasses up.

I feel I've hit stumbling block only more practice can alleviate.

  • Your enthusiasm is wonderful. I've been playing the violin for almost 5 years now, and I love it.

  • hah , same as me :D I dunt reali noe hw much time i'v spent on violin, i everyday take violin and practice, at living room, etc, jus for sure, i nv put my violin back to violin case till midnight+ or maybe 12,11.30? haha:D btw, u play quite well!! !Nt bad!! keep it up!!:D

  • Incredibly jealous of your vibrato! Well done!

  • hey, I hope you post more videos and keep us up to date on your progress

  • how much time do you practice in a day? I've also been learning violin for about 5 months with a teacher once a week but I haven't practiced that much, so i haven't reached Gavotte yet. And also, when did you started with vibrato? any tips on how you started learning it? ...besides all that you have done really good for the time you have and also self-thought, congratulations!

  • I would never keep up if I didn't enjoy playing it so much. Everything is up to your teacher obviously, but my own goal is to be able to pick up and emulate whatever I hear from my orchestral collection, classical and game music. (I'm an avid gamer)

There were two things I focused on first, technique and sound. Technique is trying to get correct posture, bow grip, and learn to bow right. Then sound is doing above while producing correct intonation, plus learning vibrato.

    Good luck!

  • I wasn't going bother leaving but I couln't just leave without saying bravo!!

That was really good and you've only been playing for five months!

I too want to take up violin and I've already been checking out ProfessorV's vids...

    Keep it up! :)

  • Thanks! ProfessorV has great lesson videos on youtube from beginner to intermediate extensively covering violin techniques. Just type in professorv in the search bar.

Ben Chan also has great videos that are less technical and more like tips and advice. He accepts requests to critique user sent violin videos and they are very helpful to watch. Hes a very talented guy.

There are many other great videos on youtube, just do a search. Good Luck!

  • wow you're really good. I really want to learn to play the violin as well. Where can I find video tutorials?

  • You play very good!

Which books/videos did you use to learn?
