I know that arcade machines use CRT monitors, but other than the aesthetics of a CRT, what is wrong with going LCD?
It seems as though the pros outweight the cons for LCD, and yet everyone is against LCD in a cab? I'm confused? Is it just about being genuine and true to the old machines, or is there more to it than that?
@janX9 The good thing about LCD is they are light weight and easy to find, also cheap. The downside is LCD's look to nice. They make arcade games look to pixelated and blocky, this does not look good at all. Also you can not play the arcade game at it's native resolution. If you did a side by side comparison of LCD and arcade monitor running an arcade game, the arcade monitor would win hands down. The game on the arcade monitor would look so crisp and clean. BUt hey to each there own.
@spacegoogie Thanks for the info spacegoogie. If I ever get around to making my own cab, I'm sure that will be one of my more difficult decisions to make.
Some day they will stop making the CRT's I think. And here in Europ It's allmost impossible to find something like Wells Gardner or monitors specialy made for cabs.
So I decided to use a SONY 32" Full HD LCD TV.
The model of the cab is the same as a MK2 cab only wider.
It's not finished yet but it will look real nice I'm sure.
here's a thought, why not add the 22" lcd into another cab and make it a vertical monitor pinball cab, this way you can do it over time when you have the money etc.
@ArcadeMameMachine I would, the only thing is I have one more empty cab left and I know a few people who are going to want a MAME cab. If I had some extra cabs and an extra PC I would for sure have a dedicated pinball cab.
I say what ever works works. plus what helps generate less heat and uses up less energy just as long as you don't have this thing where the screen is too small and dosn't work out.
@nickynooch I'm with you 100% on that. But it's going to be the only way right now to play VisualPinbal in a Higher rez. To bad I can't do some kind of piano-hinge on the LCD and have it swing down in front of the 25" monitor......hmmmmmm...now thats an idea.
@spacegoogie Oh I gotcha. The other thing to consider though is with a widescreen lcd you don't get the vertical games looking good. Pac man on a widescreen lcd would be awful in my opinion. I guess for me I play vertical games FAR more than visual/future pinball.
jase, what pinball emulator are you running? i have a monitor in my cab and im running futurepinball and it looks great on my monitor. ( i cant remember the name of the monitor but its not a wells-gardner). also, what part of the country are you in?
@kornstory I almost got the D9800. But even with that I can't do 1600x1050 for hi-rez pinball tables. So I would be in the same boat i'm in now. The D9800 does what 800x600 max. I have like 4 crt's in the closet two 17", one 21" , and one 15".
If I had a 22" crt I would have that in there for sure.
Why are people so ANTI-LCD in a mame cab?

I'm anti-lcd for a monitor, just ends up looking fake for an arcade cab. Just my 2 cents.

@neofreak91 I have looked for CRT bigger than 21" with no luck. Not only that but I have no extra money right now.

it's bad enough going from 25" to 22" wide. If I go that route.

@spacegoogie I can not find a CRT bigger then 19" and thats all I need to get going!

@Tizzlin I'm in the California. the pinball emulator is VisualPinball.
Seeing it at 1600x1500 is total eye-candy, and seeing it at 800x600 is just plane sad, I don't even wanna play it.

Very true sir, pros and cons on both sides. Just depends on what you like to play more.

Plus I would be going from an ATI HD4650 to two 8800 GTS's, 512 mb each.
When I went from 8800's to the ATI card I noticed a big drop in 3D games like MK4 on mame.

Rather have a monitor. D9800 amazing.
