  • oh, come on. totally staged. a girl who knew how to play the piano, but for the sake of the video, audience and producers.... says she didn't. come on, people. wake UP

  • One of my life goals is to be graced by the presence of this man. He is amazing.

  • so he made her forget how to play the piano? o.O?

    wow.. very nice

  • He brought her back the feelings she had when she played like a child.

Mind you Mozzart played this piece when he was a kid.

  • @SuperGrgur Exactly -That was the whole point to bring out an accomplished pianists "inner child feelings" - I play myself and can see exactly how jaded you can become with the constant practice etc

  • I have played Saxophone sense i was 10, now im 29, after taking college courses years ago on music, slowly after that i became disinterested, it took me two years to rediscover why i loved music, wish i could have had Derren to help me in a few weeks rather than a few years , great video!

  • did noone watch this full clip??? they constantly argue that she couldnt have learnt it in a week but at the end Derren explains that she was a great player before this.. that she knew how to play fluently.. all he did was 'Un-Teach' her that feeling.. He changed her thoughts on playing the piano.. He didnt teach her how to play -_-.. Derren - 1 .. Us - 0

  • @DjKaupapa Well done someone at last who actually (like me) understands EXACTLTY what happened. A very good demonstration of how people either a) do not watch the full clip or b) do not listen to what they are being told, by the good Mr Brown !!!!

  • @DjKaupapa Although, if he did teach her how to play in a week without touching the piano, it would be the #1 method to learning the piano. :)

However, Darren Brown is a magician and his miracles are illusions. In this case, the illusion was that the lady was led into believing that she never had played the piano before.

  • Comment removed

  • I like Derren Brown too but this is total BS. I'm a musician myself and i like D. Brown, but please stop buying everything they're selling you.......

  • @minasgekos You just didn't watch the entire clip before throwing down your judgement that this is "total BS." Derren brown did not miraculously teach her how to be a piano master in a week, she was already a very accomplished pianist to start with. What he did was much more feasible for a hypnotist/NLP master - he helped change her beliefs and attitude towards piano playing to something more positive.

  • the bitch looks like tay zonday!!! AKA THE chocolate rain guy !! ha

  • like a zombie sitting at the piano.

  • lol, derren brown fools his tv audience once more :P :)

  • How does he do that? Thats easy she just have to learn how to follow the song, rhythm. She isnt playing it, the piano does the job itself.

  • @globe255 I think you'll find that Ashani is actually an accomplished pianist.

You can look her up - she's been playing for years. Derren just showed her how to enjoy it again

  • @computersolutions164 No thats another person.

  • @globe255 I promise it is not, I do not know where you are looking but I can assure you that the girl used in Derren's piece and Ashani, who has her own MySpace page are one and the same person

  • @computersolutions164 What should the idea be by learning a piano player to play piano?

  • @globe255 You (The audience) were not told at any time that Yshani was an accomplished pianist, so it appeared that Derren had taught her piano in a week under hypnosis. That is the illusion that Derren wanted to create. the only thing you were told is that Yshani USED to play piano but had become jaded with it over the years and no longer derived enjoyment from it. I play piano myself, at grade level and I can tell you for certain that the way she plays is that of an expert not an amateur.

  • @globe255 The reason that Wigmore Hall in London was chosen is quite simply because it is a known venue for new up and coming pianists and that makes the illusion all the more believable. Remember Derren is an illusionist and what you see might not be the whole truth.

  • @computersolutions164 But he hasnt really created an illusion when she already could play after a bit training.

  • @globe255 Well he has really since you were allowed to think that Yshani was just an ordinary person who played piano when she was younger. Derren did not lie exactly, he just did not tell you the whole truth and just created the illusion of an amateur pianist suddenly playing like an expert. Believe me this is not possible in a week. To play that piece, that fluently would take longer than a week.

  • @computersolutions164 Yes thats a nice job. I must say i like to see her doing it.

  • @globe255 The correct spelling of her name is

    Yshani Perinpanayagam

    She's on MySpace

  • If you are a guest on the show you can see if you're going to pick treat or trick beforehand. You just have to know one thing. If the head of the T points left it's treat, to the right it's trick

  • If you are a guest on the show you can see if you're going to pick treat or trick beforehand. You just have to know one thing. If the head of the T points left it's treat, to the right it's trick

  • pause at 8:49, turn ur screen upside down, a trick becomes a treat and a treat becomes a trick. u sausage you!

  • @micangello101

If you are a guest on the show you can see if you're going to pick treat or trick beforehand. You just have to know one thing. If the head of the T points left it's treat, to the right it's trick

  • Why can't Derren teach me to play the piano? :(

  • @LawtonsChair Well I play and have lessons every week find a good teacher preferably NOT of the internet variety since they are all crap. A good teacher will cost you £20.00 an hour. Derren probably does not have the time and probably cannot play either

  • thats bullshit LoL. Even if you learned all the notes and keys ones head wouldnt bob like that or hands move like a pianists.

  • he's a devil...

  • Brown is just fucking amazing. What a talent.

  • Awesome, absolutely awesome.......The mind is so powerful and unlimited in what we can or cannot do.

  • @swordfish00007 Its just a trick!

  • coming from a performer, i cannot imagine going on stage to perform something i had not practiced ever. the thought of it gives me chills

  • that is very cool for the girl. derren is a talented fucker i'll say that much.

  • would be cool to have derren make your subconscious suck up knowledge when you're preparing for exams! =D

  • ...well, what the hell was the trick card should post to do?

  • both cards can say trick and treat... just turn them up side down

  • one lady did choose a trick card. and darren trained her for i think one or two weeks for her trick. after she got trained he got her one night told her she chose trick and got her tied up put in a sack which was also tied and throw down blackpool lake. really cold btw the outside and also the lake. and in matter of seconds like maybe a couple of mins she came up all fine.

  • very weird she actually can play that good, I'm also a piano player, and have worked for years to get strenght in my fingers, and she just had it from the beginning?

she had all the technique with the pedal, and good position, even crossing her arms as she played; to me it seams very unbelievable. never played b4 lol

  • she had played all her life, they say so at the end!

  • oh, so he just hypnotized her telling her to forget everything about piano? or was it just that piece, she never had played b4?

  • both. he made her believe that she hadn't played at all in her life so he could re-teach her in a new method that was completely new and refreshing for her.

  • yeah he hypnotized her into forgetting about her history with the piano

  • derren explained that she had played before...when she was little but she grew apart from the piano. But of course who knows how far along she was...

  • Man, that was awesome!

I was thinking it was bullshit as soon as she started playing because she's obviously an excellent pianist but then that end bit blew my mind! I didn't even consider that he'd hypnotised her to forget that she can play.

He must've told her to forget that she CAN play rather than telling her she CAN'T play piano. I'm guessing this would still allow her access to her skills just not her memories of playing.

    Nice work Derren.

  • it was fairly obvious that she was talented at the piano when she played chopsticks, her striking technique was much better than someone who can't play the piano

  • u have to watch the last 2 minutes u dickheads!!

  • haha never mind, just got to the end

  • I really don't know about this one. I bought the pub quiz one, but this... it just isn't possible to learn to play like that without practice. :)

  • watch the end of it,,,, it says that she had played all of her life, and that he only made her forget about playing..

  • Anyone ever notice that the Trick and Treat cards are actually the same, just turn it upside down and it becomes the other?

  • sheeet, thats some nice detective work bro hahah

  • i noticed it too but i never knew the purpose of the cards being the same

  • yes!! it's like angels and demons

  • Correct !

  • @jlaw1985 It's called an ambigram ;) he uses them very carefully in some of the episodes

  • @jlaw1985 yes, in one of the episodes he sets the cards up in a way so the participant picks trick no matter what.

  • @jlaw1985 i noticed it too. trick or treat part was irrelevant though.

  • @jlaw1985 Nooooo, reeeealy?

  • @jlaw1985 Yeh he does it in one of the episodes because he already had a trick set up. He makes a guy go completely insane

  • @brenecki You are correct, Derren did turn a card upside down and as Im sure most of us know the design of the card is to say Trick and Treat depending on what way it is flipped. However if you watch the video again which I believe is entitled the taxi driver though he did flip the card the participant actually chose the original trick card.

  • @jlaw1985

And because of this they change the cards for season2

  • 8:58 "i know in your head you had never been playing before".

    something strange.

  • so did she only played as a young girl, or she has been playing since she was a young girl?

  • i wanna b hypnotized so bad, so then i can do therapy and remember what i did!!!!lol

  • Thank you for uploading these videos, I really enjoy them.

  • You're most welcome look out on Channel 4 UK September 9th - New Derren stuff called "The Event"

  • Is there any way to rent or buy them? (I'm in America) I've looked on Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, nothing :(

  • Ay Bro, if you go the channel 4 website (google channel 4), then right down the bottom of the home page there is a small link that says 'SHOP', go to that and then in the search bar just type 'derren brown'.

It brings up nearly all of his dvd's and books for sale. They seem cheap too, though I don't know how much pounds are worth these days.

Not sure if they ship internationally.

  • Wow, thank you :)

  • You're welcome

  • so he made her forget that she played her whole life and made her be joyful when she plays.. and taught her to play that song without actually practicing it ON the piano.. Darren always makes me wonder what other kinda of things we can do with the mind

  • I guess you be looking forward to "The Events" by Derren coming up on Channel 4 in the U.K then very shortly. I think its a compilation and then he is apparently doing the "Schroders Cat" experiment too. The season of "Derrenism" is definately upon us once again folks - can't wait !

  • Yeah I'd imagine that it wouldn't be possible to really make someone without past experience into a pianist over a week through hypnosis, because even if you say they could be 100% prepared mentally your muscle memory would also need to be developed in order to perform the notes and that only comes with years of practice.

  • she did have past experience, she had played as a young girl but i guess he hypnotized her not to remember that experience.

  • Ambigrams rule.

  • AMAZING !!!

  • he is incredible:)

  • she is cute and beautiful... her eyes were looking terrific after the concert.

  • i am always so amused at the amount of comments on his trick/treat ambigram cards and how it doesn't matter which one they pick. well that's sort of the point isn't it? i've looked through several pages of the comments for this video and it's amazing to see how many referred to this as a "treat" and how many said it was "trick"...it was both. there's a treat in every trick and a trick in every treat.

  • She's beautiful & she's hot, for him. Look at her eyes, after the concert!

  • Obviously you didnt take in what 2dreamy said.

and did watch the full video...Sigh

  • William, you're an idiot.

  • yep.. did he just turn it off after the concert?

  • Deffinetely fake.

I'm a concert pianist and I know what Im saying.

Playing piano is not only hitting right keys. Her playing is obviously trained in hours of practising. I see it in her fingers and arms. Moves of the playing "mechanism" are impossible to learn without a keyboard.

  • You should see the whole video before criticizing it, the point of the whole trick was to make her forget that she actually is a professional piano player. This woman has played the piano all her live, the trick was to make her forget that and re-learn what she had already been doing all her life.

She was, and still is, a professional piano player.

  • Yes, in her subconscious she knows exactly how to play the piano, but all Derren did was make her forget that she knew how to play the piano, but the subconscious training that she had her whole life were still there.

  • you fcuking tosser we all know that

  • well the guy i replied to didnt

  • Hey why don't you watch then end when Darren tells her that she played the piano all her life but he made her forget that.

  • What is the music called which she is playing??

  • Mozart- Twelve variations/Twelve variations on a theme/ Twelve variations on a star song

  • Ok Thank you!! =D

  • Ah, I remember the cat in the box. Didn't know that Derren is going to make a show of it... Nice...

I read through as many books as posslible on magic (especially mentalism) but it's very hard to find some good ones in germany where I actually live...

  • You might want to try looking on Amazon for Milton Erickson.

Patterns of the Hypnotic Techniques Vol I & II

Vol I is quite an easy read but Vol II takes a fair bit of concentration, it is written in an academic way by Bandler & Grinder. There are however easier to understand interpretations of Milton Erickson's work though

  • Well Kischman Andy is Derrens' co-writer. the shows are not made up they are based on the daily routine of the participants taking part. Andy Nyman is one of the few magicians to hold the MIMC+Gold Star which is the highest award the Magic Circle can award. Derren watches his candidates for a fortnight to see how they react in a given situation. Then the trick is designed and executed.

  • @computersolutions164: it was a treat, not a trick :D

Well, nothing is fake because there is nothing needs to be faked. Quite an interesting thing...

But does anybody know who makes up all these shows and stories Derren takes the people through? Is it himself or maybe Andy Nyman?

  • If you Google "Andy Nyman" you will see what I mean. Derren is a professional mentalist who has studied how the human mind works. You can read the same books that taught him, I have and it is amazing what you can find out, designing a stunty around this is the hard thing though - Look out for "Schoedingers Cat", I think its coming out in September. Prepare for Derren to amaze you again.

  • Ok now this is fake. That girl is a bad actor. Derren is a nice guy but I admire his showmanship not his tricks

  • So what exactly do you think is fake then. I have a feeling I know exactly what you are going to say and if you do then you have totally misunderstood the trick

  • such a nice treat. This is actually the first episode I'd seen that didnt have a trick. this was sweet.

  • i've been playing for over ten years and i have to say, you can tell if someone has exprience by simply looking at their fingers, you supposed to keep your fingers relaxed and as straight as possible but as you can see she plays with her fingers as-if they were claws. She definetly had serious talent when she was younger and fell off for many years. so she obviously couldn't have done that without practice unless the subliminal learning works and the hypno-therapy really "tapped" her ability.

  • that was amazing

  • Haha! For a minute there, I thought Derren had thaught the girl to play the piano

  • he is doing it, however its being done, we just cannot confuse what we see with what is actually happening

  • Richard Dawkins interviewed Derren Brown himself I do not know which bit you think is staged and I do not see the comparison between Criss Angel and Derren. Everyone knows he levitates himself with a crane and wires in very bright daylight, so you cannot see those wires when filmes correctly.

  • I have seen Derren live and I would highly recommend it to you.

  • i think you are very mislead. hypnosis is something people study, and something that is possible. whereas if you had read a book of criss angel's you would've read about how he has staged it all.

and criss angel is nothing like derren brown.

  • wonderfull treat

  • ive played for ten years now, and besides the apparent mistake at 5:30, everything else looked right

  • Ok I know people say she's really a pro pianist and everything but I have some proof that the sound doesn't match what she's playing:

At 5:30 you can hear a really bass note, but both her hands are above middle C.

Again at 5:49 according to the audio she should be playing a trill in her right hand, yet she's just playing a single note.

Why does she play with only 2 fingers in the beginning of the first part? Did Derren hypnotizer her to do that too? And where did she learn the fingering from?

  • It does match, the only thing is that the sound comes a bit later than the video

  • You didn't watch the entire thing did you? The background of the show was that before Derren showed up Ashani was complaining that her love for the piano was fading, that years of practice had dulled the excitement she once had for playing. Derren erased her memory of ever playing the piano and made the experience new and fun again, that was the treat. She knew how to play the song based upon her muscle memory (she's probably played that song many times before), but that she didn't THINK so.

  • Absolutely correct, you have to watch ALL of Derren to get the idea. That's the same with all his work otherwise you miss bits and then your brain fills the bits in usually wrongly !

  • Sounds like you need a bit of help mate. Derren never uses actors. Never under-estimate him.

  • She's hot.

  • he comes off as genuine though. always explains how he does his tricks. i dont think he'd lie just for this one trick

  • Stooge!

  • She made her forget she was a piano player for a week? I don't believe that. I would stumble upon lots of situations that would remind me that I can play the piano during a normal week of my life.

    Maybe I'm misunderstanding, though?

  • She never played the piano, she could barely play chopsticks.

  • I don't get why people insist on commenting informatively when they don't know. No, she's played the piano for a long time before appearing in Trick or Treat. Since she was four, in fact. Derren's using his "misdirection", as he calls it, to make many of us think she learned from scratch without actually telling us that. What I'm not getting is; is Yshani actually saying that she forgot she was a pianist for a week? I *think* that was just some clever wording and editing.

  • It was a joke, who plays chopsticks?

  • I don't get one thing - when the girl leaves the scene, Derren is at the audience (06:16), but when she enters the backstage corridor, he is already there (06:28)! We can still hear the applause. How on Earth could he get there before her? Even Derren can't be in two places at the same time!

  • It's called editing !

Both the sound and the picture are edited, so Derren has time to change location whilst you are still listening to the sound of the audience applauding.

  • Sorry that bit was not magic or illusuion or mental i'm afraid.

  • wow... i've played piano for 7 years and im not even that good

  • So do I, currently doing the ABRSM exams. Yshani is diploma level, almost as good as my piano teacher, who happens to be an ex-concert pianist.

Much better to be taught by a concert pro than any old music teacher, half of them cannot even teach !

  • What a wonderful gift to give someone.

    Well done Derren.

  • No...effing....way....

    :O

  • wow. just wow.

  • thus guy is just sick !

  • ...And why do you think that then ?

  • I'd like to think that "sick" was meant in the colloquial sense of "good". Like "dope".

No, I don't understand it either.

  • What an amazing treat to give to someone. absolutely brilliant X

  • lol, i though she was going to be playing 'twinkle, twinkle little star' at the start

  • Shwe was it comes from Variations on "Ah, vous dirais-je, Maman" (a French song). By Mozart

to give it its proper name it is a piano grade 1 piece no longer used for examination. She was playing the extremely advanced version though. Diploma level at a guess

  • i-i-i-i co-co-ul-ul-dn-dn-nt-nt he-he-ar-ar w-wha-what h- h- h- e- wa- was sa- sa- yin- ying i-in th-e f-fir-st p-part

  • Ww-ee-ll tt-uu-rr-nn uu-pp yy-oo-uu-rr ss-pp-ee-aa-kk-ee-rr vv-oo-ll-uu-mm-ee tt-hh-ee-nn !!!

  • that was totally badass

  • Nice show !

  • I'm italian, and I don't understand the final part... :(

  • She is a concert pianist that did not enjoy piano anymore...he made her forget that she could play...made her think he was teaching her using hypnosis and then she got excited about it again...he gave her the gift of her passion again! Its a wonderful treat!

  • remarkably

  • oonsrd means he gave the gift again!!! like wen she was 7. wow great fingers, and good work derren agan

  • That is a beautiful gift he's given her.

  • she CAN really play the piano professionaly, he says at the end that he hypnotised her into forgetting how to play the piano, then at the end she remembered during the recital...so she knew how to play the piano all along, he made her forget.because she was losing intrest in playing (her gift) and got her to stary enjoying playing again!!!

  • Yes, I did realise this because I actually listened to what he told her in the video. I was referring to the fact that he has given her a beautiful gift, i.e. the enjoyment and love of using her talents that she was losing. That was the gift. It was beautiful. Please do not assume everyone replying to YouTube videos are morons. Thank you.

  • the girl is hot

  • every part of me cringed when she messed up at the start

  • FOR ALL OF YOU WHO WISH FOR DERREN TO TEACH YOU OR BETTER yOUR SKILL, IF YoU CAN'T ALREADY TELL POSITIVITY IS A LARGE ASPEcT OF ANY CURRICULUM. STOP BEING NEGaTIVE. STOP TELLING YOURSELF THAT YOU nEED "SOMEBODY ELSE" TO HELP IMPROVE YOUR SKILL.

  • omfg! o.O .. that was wicked

  • holy shit! wow that is really cool

  • holy shit...i wish i could get someone to make me do that....on the drums at least...even piano actually...i wouldn't mind being able to do that with any instrument :O :O :O

  • omg, just finished watching it.. lol i had no idea that she had played all her life lol =D

  • I play myself havce done for years and I will tell you that that fluidity od movement is that of a professional concert pianist not the movement of "someone who can play the piano"

trust me - there is a huge difference !

  • ive played for two years... i cant play that! =( lol

  • this is my favourite video..you are truely amazing derren..love you lots!

  • Simple. Weird. Interesting. THIS IS DERREN BROWN ! =)

  • The point was that Yshani could and always was a professional piano player. You can check her myspace page. I play myself and she is definately a professional. Derren did not make her forget to play the piano, he just took her back to a time when she "Enjoyed" playing, as she had become jaded by all the learning. This was a confidence booster, nothing else.

  • 4:36 she looked drunk when she was bowing, is that a sign of being in a hypnotic state? I missed the point there.

  • Hi Detrimentalflame, I am curious to know what YOU think the point was even if you missed it. what did you think it was about.

And no looking drunk and bowing after a performance has nothing to do with being in a hypnotic state.

  • would it be possible that forgeting how to play piano and then suddenly coming out of no where of this amazing skill she realized she have improve her self esteem and confidence? I think that's the point :/

  • i have to say, i'm EXTREMELY surprised and even skeptical that he was able to make a professional pianist forget that she plays for an entire week. seems to me that if she was that serious about it, it'd be so much a part of her identity that it wouldn't work... or at least she'd know that something was very wrong with her. if someone tried to make me forget everything i knew about handling/training dogs, for example, i don't think it'd work because it's an integral part of what makes me, ME.

  • Same here and I play too but then of course Derren never mentioned about here being a professional pianist at all. The audience just assumed she wasn't and thewn all of a sudden she could play. The clever people amongst thgis group went and looked up Yshani. Then of course in the clip LOOK HOW she plays, she is obviously a professional.

  • im a piantist to...

and i heard that hypnotizing works...

clearly he basicly played a piece of piano...

    which is in her head..

    and remebered by this song...

    so basicaly..

somhow... derren has made her copy that tune on the piano...

    get it?

  • I think you may find that Yshani has been a professional pianist for years. She started palying at the age of 6, if my menory serves me orrectly. She would have learned this piece probably at Grade 1, depending on which sylabus (ABRSM,TRINITY or RCM)

The "fleshing out" of this piece sounds like a Grade 4-5 attempt to me.

I'll ask my teacher tonight, she has seen the video too.
