I live in New orleans it's still bad but there improving our city half population of our city went away cuzz there scared to come back and during katrina crime skyrocketed
quake on the east coast today. they're trying to reduce the population to under 500 million. this quake may be a precursor to something big on 9/11/11. i don't trust the gov't anymore.
it's sad that a country such as the u.s.a is spending all its money in afghanistan and leaving its own infrastructure to crumble and its people to suffer.
We in Middle Tennessee are also vulnerable to flooding, as witnessed by last spring's catastrophe. We have levees protecting us and they might fail in the event of another deluge. However, our biggest fear is the failure of the Wolf Creek Dam upstream from us. This is a Corp of Engineers structure and it has been allowed to fall into disrepair. Perhaps all this is part of a bigger issue - America's infrastructure being allowed to crumble?
@scaspia It is part of a bigger problem. mnoney being earmarked or appropriated for these infrastucture projects is getting robbed and misused. Billions are being wasted and the projects that the money are meant for aren't getting done.
This video's premise is still off track. People should not expect to rely on government engineering to save them from nature ! That will lead to just another disaster. The New Orleans area is the DRAIN for most of the basins of the eastern US. Don't choose to live there and expect not to get flooded !
this whole flood was due completely to republicans. they wanted death as they always do and thats what they got. they got what they wanted and they failed just like they always do.
You poor racist hill billies making these stupid commitments don't understand. The affluent of this world don't view you any different from blacks. This was the origin of blackface satire. Whites painted their faces black in protest, to say rich whites where treating them like ni@@ers. Should be with us.
B.S. The Corps, has upgraded its Levee Safety Program and increased its inspection and maintenance standards 10 fold due to the Katrina event. The levees and flood protection system was not built inadequately due to technical deficiencies encurred on the Corps end, it was built to the standard that was commensurate with the funding that was allocated by Congress and local Sponsors. Get your facts straight and stop blaming the government.
And the poor, poor, oppressed black residents............. left town to live in gubmint trailers & hotels, the ones that stayed...raped, robbed, shot at rescue choppers, looted stores and set fire to historic homes (in the garden district)... IE owned by "whitey"........ and "whom" came to there rescue to rebuild? Evil white people & 1000's of illegal mexicans. FUCK those animals. Better luck next time?
bshaun2: You are correct , without the storm the levees wouldn't have failed. However, the levees should have never failed. The storm had already passed when the flooding began. At. that point (after the natural disaster) the city would have been just fine. Then, the very levees that the Army Corp of Engineers built to protect us for a situation like this, failed at an alarming rate. This is where it became an engineering disaster.
Energy sources without the need for fuel or energy input exist ,But the coverup is very strong,Get the blueprints for a real Magnet motor free enegy machine at LT-MAGNET-MOTORdotCOM ,Be the revolution!
Yea, most people don't understand that New Orleans wasn't really "hit" by Katrina as much as their levy system failed. Katrina came ashore in MISSISSIPPI and wiped towns OFF THE MAP. But, due to the "media", everyone thinks that New Orleans was the worst affected. Part of that too is the laziness of the New Orleanians to take care of themselves and stop sucking off the government teat.
You cant answer the question, and the question is dumd? You will never be able to climb to my level trash. Ask your mamma/ cousin why she aborted you.
@CorrectMotion You cant answer the question and the question is dumb? You will never be able to climb to my level trash. Ask your Mamma/ cousin why she aborted you.
@sojournerchristian I wont climb on trees,so you can stay at your level, and yeah its hard to understand you because you abviously suffer of mental disability what is not surprising
In capitalism disasters and wars are best for business. If somebody states "100 billion dollars of damage" the actual meaning of those words is "100 billion dollars turnover".
The belief that it's the government's role to take care of and spoon feed people is what killed all of those people. The resources that should have gone to improving the levees went to housing, clothing, feeding and funding people.
Are there actually people who believe this bullshit?
An engineering disaster? It'd be an engineering disaster if they failed on some ordinary day. I'm pretty sure that the category 5 hurricane had something to do with the failure of the levees.
Wait... is this just really dry humor that I'm not getting?
A lot of New Orleans is below sea level so get over it. Levees broke because of a natural occurence. New Orleans needed to do something itself instead of crying we can't do anything for our town where it concerns the levees. Levees as they were rebuilt will break again if you have 3 4 or 5 hurricane. Do something for yourself.
its not up to the government to baby sit all the fuckers that die in natural disasters..............its mother nature FUCK YOU it happens stop pointing fingers were all humans
The best lesson you can take from the Katrina flooding of New Orleans is to plan a route out of your coastal city (most of us live near a coast, hence the high percentage of those at risk behind a levee) that's at least 100 miles inland and 750 feet above sea level. Katrina was a wake-up call, and the situation is only getting worse - to culminate in a poleshift in our very NEAR FUTURE. Plan on an "extended camping trip" with food for at least 3 to 4 months and plenty of seeds, fishing rod/net

lets get this straight...New Orleans is a coastal city that is built on land that sits below sea level...in essence what you have built there is a large bath tub. NO levy system will prevent water from moving to the lowest point and at about 8 pounds per gallon of water, the weight of say.....OCEAN will win out over engineering every time. As important as the city is, human intervention in destroying the deltas has endangered the city and it's people.
How much of Holland is below sea level? How many floods do they suffer? What did their engineers say when they visited New Orleans? The answers are out there. Read up!
Are you an architect?? Why, if properly built/maintained levees all over this country usually work properly if it's a sea level-only issue? I'm assuming most major docks like thos in NOLA are also somewhat below sea level. This just doesn't make sense. Has NOLA never survived a hurricane before? If the levees didn't break the city would not have been under water, is what I gather. Please explain your thoughts on this in more detail. Thank you.
yes, this is the governments fault and so is 9-11.
wait... ooh yeah it was a fucking category 5 hurricane and a group of terrorists who unexpectedly inflicted mass amounts of terror. lets dump it all on George Bush and any other political figure or group who was in power at the time that has no ties to the democratic party.
While I agree with you regarding the canals tearing up the marsh, the majority of the flooded areas should have never been built on. As a life long resident of greater New Orleans, this is more about people not using common sense in making the choice on where to build. How many times did those levees actually save people who chose to build in sinking former swamp areas ?
My parents learned the lesson in 47 and moved to higher ground along the river.
@etano1 Honestly...you are the fool...we *the dutch* make land out of water, we create! I'm dutch and I am damn proud and happy to live BELOW sealevel I feel safe and wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the world.
@eddythehunn First fuck you and your mama. Next fuck son and your daugther. After that fuck the goat you fuck last night and the cow you woke up next too. YOUR WIFE!!
Great vid! ACE(Army Cor. of Eng.) should be given same weight as NIST's(Nat.Ins.Science&Tech.) discription of WTC7's demise on 9/11. Or 911CommissionReport on initiation of "collapse" of WTC1&2 on that day. Not to mention failure to produce any time stamped parts of any platforms that crashed (no vid at Pentagon either) on that day. Sorry to seem to trivialize Nawlins but I have a feelin theyll be there even if America isn't. Watch Obama Deception to see the bigger pic. Le Bonton Rulae! Cheers
you're implying (based on the link you provided) that the levees were blown up in order to flood poor neighborhoods and spare richer areas. The levees failed in 53 places, flooding poor/rich/black/white/Asian areas. That detail is conveniently disregarded when people proffer the conspiracy theory about blown-up levees.
The proper response is that over half of this country's cities are protected by substandard levees, and if we- New Orleans- don't demand and receive repairs for their shabby workmanship, then the precedent is set for them to legally betray everyone else.
Don,t count on the government to keep you safe.you gotta be smart enough to get the hell out when a cat 4s comin your way I know i lived on bolivar penn. most of my life till IKE destroyed my home.
@Roacheater Even if every human soul had evacuated, that would not have changed the catastrophic damage to the city. This video is about the flooding damage and how you too could be in danger.
@LeveesOrg Isn't that what i just Said? you mean to tell me people didnt know those levees could fail ? they been talkin bout that on the news and docum. for years I moved inland thats what you do when your tired of dealin with the canes
Friends in DC and CA are painfully aware of the dangers potentially facing their cities, but the ACoE insists they're taking care of the "situations" which, is funny since this video is already two years old and the situations still exist.
Oh, and to dirty30yo - the website does exist. Just click on the hotlink above right.
This video has got 2 be the best waste of my time EVER!! Its so funny how the author pretends to have an org website! What a waste of time, i hope these guys do something better in life I really do. GO NOLES!!
The old part of New Orleans is above sea level. However the newer parts of New Orleans is under sea level. That is what's wrong. Tell with all of the cities near oceans and the Gulf. What other city is under sea level in hurricane alley? This is the biggest engineering disaster New Orleans has in their city. There would be no reasons to have the leves if the city stayed above sea level. That's what Katrina showed America and the world. Yet we still want to keep that mistake time and time again.
As an example: More square miles of Miami are below sea level than New Orleans. They are right in the middle of Hurricane Alley and right on the coast. I bet people wouldn't blink to restore Miami to its former self if something happened there.
@mikehenry01 I highly doubt this. The old parts of New Orleans like the French Quarters is above sea level. That's why that part of town was hardly effected by Katrina's sea surge. I think New Orleans was a poorly designed city with in the enviroment it's in. Oh you remember Hurricane Andrew back in 1992? It slammed into Miami and Miami wasn't flooded in the aftermath like New Orleans was after Katrina. New Orleans had only caught the weak side of Katrina which was only a Cat 3 Hurricane.
@saved03 New Orleans is exactly where it belongs. She flooded due to poor engineering, not a bad storm. Had the levees been built right, N.O would have had some lost shingles and some soggy carpets. And would be fully recovered by now.
@LeveesOrg That's the point. New Orleans is a poorly engineered city. You noticed the old orginal parts of New Orleans did not flood. Hmmm could it be the fact that it is above sea level. Katrina is not what flooded N.O. it was the surge days after that flooded N.O.. Amsterdam is below sea level yes but however it's not in hurricane alley like N.O. is. That's why I cannot understand why build a city below sea level in an area where hurricanes are a real threat. Cat 5 N.O. on eastside. Bye N.O.
Historically, the poorer parts of town, even poor cities, were in the lowest areas. Randy Newman's song, Louisiana 1917, is about the intentional flooding in Plaquemines parish in order to save the industrious and wealthy city of NOLA.
@saved03 I do have to admit I think that it was known when the city was built where the high ground was. That's why the rich where there, though if anyone has any information to dispute this I would be happy to hear it.
@saved03 Yea, most people don't understand that New Orleans wasn't really "hit" by Katrina as much as their levy system failed. Katrina came ashore in MISSISSIPPI and wiped towns OFF THE MAP. But, due to the "media", everyone thinks that New Orleans was the worst affected. Part of that too is the laziness of the New Orleanians to take care of themselves and stop sucking off the government teat.
I've heard all my life of people stating that the level breech was on purpose for Hurricane Betsy and was due to color. Katrina was the same old song and dance. The Lakeview area residents aren't saying it's because it's color related. The problem of rebuilding the levels recommended was over 20 years ago. I was sick to my stomach trying to find my elderly parents. They kept finding excuses to not replace the levee, and knew a 2 or 3 storm would breech somewhere.
Actually, there is no evidence that anyone in New Orleans was warned that the levees could breach and fail. Carol Forsloff, of the Digital Journal, did a 6-piece series putting that myth to bed.....The levees, designed and built by the Army Corps failed, and at some places 5 feet below specs.
The lower ninth ward was covered with 18 feet of fetid water, teeming with toxic waste and dead animals, some human. People who tried to resue were turned away by government forces. People who escaped were treated as dangerous looters. What do uou call that?
This is well documented and is right on the mark. We cannot depend on our rulers to save us from neglected engineering. Stuff like this can lead us to ask who is authorizing and controlling the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers? Is it the private cartel known as the Federal Reserve System? Well, it certainly isn't Mr and Mrs American.
The pattern is clear to those who want to see the truth. Most people just want to be content with all that is wrong out of fear. We all know that much is right in our country, but much needs inprovement. It's become fashionable or should I say a reality, where most people just think for themselves and worry for no one, not realizing that down the road they can become the next victim of gross and purposeful neglect.
I have experience working on Corp projects in NOLA and can tell you that money is not the issue. The engineers who do the design know what results will follow...but they are human and subject to UNBELIEVABLE pressure by the thugs that run the governments for an outcome for dollars spent in desired "directions" that will go to thug friends.
Vote them ALL out! They are scumbags that feed at the gov trough and will never leave until it's slaughter time...just like the PIGS they are.
@novembertinner Yes. It's very important to understand that the corruption starts at the top and it's imposed DOWN the ranks with maximum pressure and intimidation.
Why does the US always send armed soldiers when the victims are black? Survivors of a disaster aren't a threat; they need water, food, shelter & medical care.
People flock to Fox news because they WANT to believe that America is the greatest country on earth, and are not prepared to believe that the US Government is negligent and dishonest. Patriotic fervor is good, but when it leads to denial, then the end result is future disaster.
The problem is that investigation has been replaced by belief. Fox News did not report the causes, just gave opinions based on ignorance. Most Americans still don't know the cause of the New Orleans flooding.
Oops. Mistake in message earlier. Should have said let "them" get so desperate, not let "me" get so desperate, although I am tied up in knots for those poor people. Why all the money for defense and more advanced nuclear weapons, etc., and let the Army Corp of Engineers use rocks and wire. Certainly they would love to do better if they were funded properly.
this is so familiar now that we have similar neglect happening in Haiti...why cant we all write to Obama and yank the troops out of afghanistan and get them to Haiti to gain control of medicine and food disbursement and looting????
...and how fast is N O forgotten in their continuing need.
Put more troops in Haiti? NO THANKS. There is already an occupation army there now under the guise of humanitarian assistance. Given the obscene history of U.S. intervention in Haiti the last thing the Haitians need is more U.S. boots on the ground. With respect to New Orleans check out the work of Common Ground. That's where assistance should be directed to. Keep it out of the hands of the racist power structure running things.
The US sent 20,000 troops to Haiti already, we do not need more. That is enough for an occupation, and they seem to have an order to let the Haitians starve or die of dehydration or let me get so desperate they riot. The US has been controlling the politics there for years and set up the puppet government and booted out Aristied, the elected and popular leader who is now in Africa. It is shameful that they cannot work faster and more effectively. Haitians work for US businesses at 68 cents a hr.
This clip's allegations are frightening, but not amazing. After the 9/11 false flag and its aftermath, all we know is that the U.S. government cares very little to serve the public and that the numerous entities that we have trusted to keep it in check are shamefully covering it all up...
If a person in a posistion of power is evil or incompetent, the results will be the same. There is a reason why world history is not taught in U.S. schools. Educate yourselves and everyone else you can and the tide of corruption will stagnate and die. A leader can only lead if someone follows. My heart and respect go out to all Americans who seek truth and freedom with their eyes open, and especially those who have been devestated by this incompetent disaster. God Bless America and Ron Paul.
Politicians lie, and lie, and lie some more. They work for the shadow government, most of them unknowingly. They do no want us to be intelligent. They know that intelligence is the only thing that can beat them..people who are smarter that them. Unfortunately there are not enough of us who are awake and smart enough to make changes.
You did good, Starpass, but you forget that the conscious awakening which is happening across our planet is like a wave which is gaining momentum. All we have to do is keep up what we're doing. Let our brotherrs and sisters know the truth, and never forget the power that we have. The power to come from LOVE and change this world. It sounds kinda fluffy, but I swear its true, and its working!
But Reagan said "government is not the solution, government is the problem" Yeah, right. Whne are our public servants going to take OUR COMMONS seriously again, the way they did before Reagan and the neo-cons came along? And when are we going to return to taxation levels that make the rich PAY THEIR fair share , the way they did before Reagan and the neo-cons came along?
It's good to see what basically everyone is saying. But, as kellylynn9999 indicated, what are we going to do about it? The question is not whether the government is screwing NO over and everyone else. The questions is, "What is everyone willing to do about it?". If you follow the money, you know who's really running the planet. Let's take our freedom back. Let's apply Natural Law principles. Let's not fall for the 'benefits' that we are given in order to give control over to them.
We need to know this is all a part of the big plan of the Illuminati to depopulate the earth by 80% or so. There is a dribble down effect between our government and the big guys who give the OK.
The govt destroyed my house in NO by their negligence. But being the good guys that they are, they loaned me the money to fix it. It comes with byzantine rules and restrictions that if are not followed result in the loss of the property. What a country!
I know this might sound WAY out there, but if the levees broke in over 50 places, is it possible that there was some kind of a plot to lets say purposely weaken the levees ahead of time so that they would break when the next major storm (Katrina) hit? Its not that proposterous, look at what the knieving bastards did to NYC in Sept. 2001! We know that those people have an agenda and don't mind killing their own people. Just a thought.
the sad thing is that, if the economy collapses as some fear it may (within the next two to five years), there won't be any money to fix what looks to be an enormous problem.
Spike it up then! Take the sad & the fear out of the equation. Media is arbitrary control & it's effects to disinform the public is aim of a collective consciousness created thru the fear based emotions. To accept a lie is to diminish one's conscience & fear does well to rely on hope & empty promises. An informed heart & mind is better able to discern truths! CFAR state receipts of incoming monies show costs & profits. Media, editors, & deans receive yrly reports with$=forced conformity fudge!
One good thing that came out of this is that we now have FEMA Camps all over the country. They will keep us all safe the next time this kind of thing happens. This could happen anywhere!!! Learn about HAARP and weather weapons
I would not want the Gubermint fixing levees. Since when have they ever done anything the RIGHT WAY?
But I think this was allowed to happen just like so many other disasters. There is a reason they had for intentionally witholding aid and diasarming N.O. citizens
At the age of 11 in 1947 I visited NO with my physician father who engaged in frequent conversation with locals about how the city was going to be protected in the future. Their reply often referred to the hurricane that hit the city in 1927 as if it was a mere 2 weeks previously. They clearly felt that not nearly enough money would be spent to prevent the next catastrophe, which if it made a direct city hit, would spell the end of NO. Now there ain't enough money to do anything about it.
The TRUTH has been known for quite a while now...THE LEVEE'S (MAN MADE!) BROKE (53!) FROM ALL OF THE WATER FROM KATRINA (NATURAL DISASTER) What else Needs to be said? The Government along with *Their news media started covering up these Facts as quickly as they could! AREN'T THEY ALL SO GOOD AT BRAIN-WASHING US? Just keep Shouting louder & Louder "Natural Disater & New Orleans" ...NOW, LET THEM *RE-BUILD* EVERY F*CKING LEVEE THAT KILLED ALL OF THOSE PEOPLE, THE CORRECT WAY THIS TIME! Period!
Sweetme-my my my! Are the veins pokin' out & your chest all tight inside? Depending on where you stand with the books of costs & profits, you could be surprised! Let's say it was a natural disaster but like 9/11 the watchers were poised for such a thing. You can't rebuild until the score with the sore is taken out of the decision forum. Privatization purely sucks as one ducks the insults & questioning while dipping deep into the pot, k? Capitalizing the capitalists 2capult is natural 2, k?
i have to say, here in europe UK, we have a department called the board of trade, and various other departments that would not allow army engineers to do civil work, outside an emergany situation, if a company done this, uk, and it had 53 faults, then all engineers and paper work involved would go before the board of trade inquiry, and those whom were found at fault would.... GET FUCKED.
A well made. Well constructed & well presented video, i have worked and lived in holland meny times since the 1970s, they do have summer long maintainance programs on the dams / levees, you only need be there to see, but the locals the people, take note and interact & get involved, you americans need to do the same at every level guys.... every level....
Something to look into, the engineers have orders and funding. If the funding for the levees or the orders were somehow interfered with then the disaster was avoidable at a whole nother level.
I live there, and went to see the newely made levees shortly after they were rebuilt, just to get a look at them. From my POV they looked nice and looked strong(the again they did beforehand, too) I went up to one, looked at the seams, which were filled with what resembled caulk and looked closely, I saw there was a slight tear in it, with somehting sticking out, I tugged on it. It was a piece of newspaper. I thought it'd been stuffed in there, but I looked more (cont)
closely with a flashlight from the car and sawthat there were other bits in it, I was able to get them out. What didn't fall apart in my hands with evenly cut pieces of newpaper.
They're filling in the gaps between the levees with newspaper...
Saying "if it wasn't for Katrina flooding would have never damaged the levees" is like saying "if it wasn't for traffic, that bridge in Minneapolis would have never been damaged.........Both Katrina and the traffic revealed structural flaws; both exposed engineering mistakes.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
and yes the port needs to be open but 800000 people are not needed to keep a port open so if you move to new orleans and this happens to you dont run around blaming every1 just look in the mirror and blame your dumbass self.
And if you move to south Florida?( severe hurricane strikes 4X as often as NOLA), and if you move to L.A. on a major earthquake fault line, and if you move to tornado alley? and if you move to terrorist strike central (NYC) ? or if you move to a river flood plain?
It's very difficult to feel capable of effecting change while living in New Orleans. It's like being in a very messy room and not knowing where to start cleaning.
The comparison is very apt. Hurricanes along the U.S. Gulf Coast and major storms in the North Sea both cause severe weather and dangerous storm surges. Read up about the great North Sea storm of the Spring of 1953 and its effects on the Netherlands and the U.K. They got serious about flood protection. There's no technical reason the U.S. couldn't as well; thus far we simply haven't.
Not "unnatural". Galveston Island wiped out by Hurricane. California wrecked by earthquakes. No man on earth is perfect therefore cannot construct "perfect" structures to withstand GOD's creation. NOLA is below sealevel, soil is delta/unstable, sits on the Gulf in the path of weather forces.
Myth number 4 isn't so bad. People should know that New Orleans isn't the only place this could happen at. However, New Orleans is unique, due to its location on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Detroit might have levees, but it's just not sitting on a huge, warm body of water that is prone to hurricanes.
Yet another contradiction. Take a look at Myth 3. It says the fact that New Orleans is below sea level is false, that large parts of it are above sea level. Well, then it isn't completely false then is it?
"Large parts" is very subjective. Here's a fact that's not subjective: the AVERAGE ELEVATION of New Orleans is BELOW sea level.
I'm not really against a city on the coast that's below sea level...we have the technology to keep the water out. I'm against videos using false arguments to win =D
IIRC surveys show of the actual inhabited area, some 40% above sea level, 20% at sea level, and 40% below. Most the below area is suburbs developed in the 20th century by draining swampland, which has since subsided (same technology of draining and develping used even more widely in Florida).
"Sea level" by itself is not an indication of flood risk. Death Valley, over 250 feet below sea level, is one of the driest places in the country, while places thousands of feet up have flooded.
Also, another logical fallacy. If the levees are the cause of the flood, then it's obviously not the lack of wetlands causing floods.
Also, this video contradicts itself. It says New Orleans is in the right place economically (although the myth is that it's in the wrong place PHYSICALLY) because it's a major hub for commercial trade. But it also says that the commercialization of New Orleans (Oil interests, canals) have weakened it's defenses against floods.
Wetlands act as a buffer against storm surge, meaning that when the rush of water comes in, the wetlands lessen it's power and elevation, thus making what does reach the levees many times weaker than the initial surge.
We need wetlands to help, because obviously the levees aren't standing up as well as we'd like.
Katrina WAS a natural disaster. It's not because the levees failed, it's because they didn't prevent. It could have been prevented, no doubt. But I get upset when over a thousand people lose their lives, and people point fingers.
Also, logical fallacy. Myth 2 = New Orleans is in the wrong place due to geography, but this video refutes that with economic facts, rather than geography facts. New Orleans is in the right place economically, but being below sea level on the coast is wrong physically.
As a former resident of New Orleans, and being very well connected, I can attest to the fact that the colapse of the levees was one of the reasons that New Orleans ended up under water on August 29, 2005. I know for a fact that the levees were built to withstand ONLY a category 3 hurricane, but the US governemnt pulled funding of the levee system AND the levee board has been charged with pocketing money that was meant to reinforce the levees. .
Yep. The levees were definitely not up to the task. But that's all this video needs to say. The truth? Levees failed. Let's spend less time pointing fingers, and more time making sure this never ever happens again. Proper funding is a good start.
I was upset with this video's use of logical fallacies and contradictions to form arguments.
What you state here is totally wrong. NOLA is way under sealevel. I know because I GPS'd the entire system. Readngs were negative, or below sealevel. Levees are built on ground that wobbles like jello when trucks pass. It's delta soil. The USACE did not screw up this city. If so, why hasn't other parts of the world fallen apart as NOLA. Think, NOLA has pumps running 24/7 pumping water OUT OF THE CITY. Hurricane or no hurricane, the city has water seeping in.
Half of New Orleans is at or WELL above sea level according to a recent joint study by Tulane and Xavier........As for the soil, any engineering course 101 teaches how to build on such soil......New Orleans is on a floodplain. 39 out of 50 of America's largest cities lie partly on a floodplain.
Is it a government problem or a state problem? Because the gov't usually provides something when the state taxes do not cover it. And nobody wants to pay higher taxes and usually vote down improvements to roads, bridges, etc; until they are falling apart.
The slow emergency response, (if any) was intentional, some will say they blew the levees intentionally. It is mainstream media that people who attempted to cross the bridge to higher ground in gretna were turned back and not allowed to leave. At Algiers point there was a clan of whites shooting blacks attempting to reach higher ground to the evacuation point on the westbank while inside the military control grid soldiers were disarming the people being held hostage by the GOV, no food, no watr.
westerling69, please watch the video and THEN post a response. The video had absolutely nothing to do with the documented agreed-upon failed response.
You live in a city that is below sea level! What part of flood risk do you not understand?
You live in a hole in the ground, MOVE!

The levees and flood protection system was not built inadequately due to technical deficiencies encurred on the Corps end, it was built to the standard that was commensurate with the funding that was allocated by Congress and local Sponsors. bshaun2: You are correct , without the storm the levees wouldn't have failed.

An engineering disaster? It'd be an engineering disaster if they failed on some ordinary day. I'm pretty sure that the category 5 hurricane had something to do with the failure of the levees.
Wait... is this just really dry humor that I'm not getting?
RevengeOfRedBaron 1 year ago
A lot of New Orleans is below sea level so get over it. Levees broke because of a natural occurence. New Orleans needed to do something itself instead of crying we can't do anything for our town where it concerns the levees. Levees as they were rebuilt will break again if you have 3 4 or 5 hurricane. Do something for yourself.

Thank you.

Yet we still want to keep that mistake time and time again.
saved03 1 year ago
@saved03
As an example: More square miles of Miami are below sea level than New Orleans. They are right in the middle of Hurricane Alley and right on the coast. I bet people wouldn't blink to restore Miami to its former self if something happened there.
mikehenry01 1 year ago 3
@mikehenry01 I highly doubt this. The old parts of New Orleans like the French Quarters is above sea level. That's why that part of town was hardly effected by Katrina's sea surge. I think New Orleans was a poorly designed city with in the enviroment it's in. Oh you remember Hurricane Andrew back in 1992? It slammed into Miami and Miami wasn't flooded in the aftermath like New Orleans was after Katrina. New Orleans had only caught the weak side of Katrina which was only a Cat 3 Hurricane.
saved03 1 year ago
@saved03 New Orleans is exactly where it belongs. She flooded due to poor engineering, not a bad storm. Had the levees been built right, N.O would have had some lost shingles and some soggy carpets. And would be fully recovered by now.
LeveesOrg 1 year ago 3
@LeveesOrg That's the point. New Orleans is a poorly engineered city. You noticed the old orginal parts of New Orleans did not flood. Hmmm could it be the fact that it is above sea level. Katrina is not what flooded N.O. it was the surge days after that flooded N.O.. Amsterdam is below sea level yes but however it's not in hurricane alley like N.O. is. That's why I cannot understand why build a city below sea level in an area where hurricanes are a real threat. Cat 5 N.O. on eastside. Bye N.O.
saved03 1 year ago
@saved03

EdieCatskill 1 year ago
Actually, there is no evidence that anyone in New Orleans was warned that the levees could breach and fail. Carol Forsloff, of the Digital Journal, did a 6-piece series putting that myth to bed.....The levees, designed and built by the Army Corps failed, and at some places 5 feet below specs.

I have experience working on Corp projects in NOLA and can tell you that money is not the issue.

Praxis1871 1 year ago
The US sent 20,000 troops to Haiti already, we do not need more. That is enough for an occupation, and they seem to have an order to let the Haitians starve or die of dehydration or let me get so desperate they riot. The US has been controlling the politics there for years and set up the puppet government and booted out Aristied, the elected and popular leader who is now in Africa. It is shameful that they cannot work faster and more effectively. Haitians work for US businesses at 68 cents a hr.

I know this might sound WAY out there, but if the levees broke in over 50 places, is it possible that there was some kind of a plot to lets say purposely weaken the levees ahead of time so that they would break when the next major storm (Katrina) hit? At the age of 11 in 1947 I visited NO with my physician father who engaged in frequent conversation with locals about how the city was going to be protected in the future. Their reply often referred to the hurricane that hit the city in 1927 as if it was a mere 2 weeks previously. They clearly felt that not nearly enough money would be spent to prevent the next catastrophe, which if it made a direct city hit, would spell the end of NO. Now there ain't enough money to do anything about it.

NEWS FLASH!!!! The levees were dynamited to create the flooding, and the "storm" was directed to New Orleons on purpose! Wakey Wakey drones!

i have to say, here in europe UK, we have a department called the board of trade, and various other departments that would not allow army engineers to do civil work, outside an emergany situation, if a company done this, uk, and it had 53 faults, then all engineers and paper work involved would go before the board of trade inquiry, and those whom were found at fault would.... GET FUCKED.

A well made. Well constructed & well presented video, i have worked and lived in holland meny times since the 1970s, they do have summer long maintainance programs on the dams / levees, you only need be there to see, but the locals the people, take note and interact & get involved, you americans need to do the same at every level guys.... every level....
thom in scotland.

Something to look into, the engineers have orders and funding. If the funding for the levees or the orders were somehow interfered with then the disaster was avoidable at a whole nother level.

this is fucking stupid if it wasn't for Katrina flooding would have never damaged the levees.... this was a natural disaster
wawawaamigos 2 years ago
If it wasn't for the man-made destruction of the wetlands, New Orleans would not have flooded.
Aren't you upset that your tax$ were wasted by poor engineering?
gmfutube 2 years ago 2
And they still are.
I thought it'd been stuffed in there, but I looked more (cont)
wajmgirl 2 years ago 2
closely with a flashlight from the car and sawthat there were other bits in it, I was able to get them out. What didn't fall apart in my hands with evenly cut pieces of newpaper.
They're filling in the gaps between the levees with newspaper...
We are so fucked.
wajmgirl 2 years ago
those are expansion joints......normal
LHAVENGER 2 years ago
I'm not levee building expert, but there has to be SOMETHING better than newspaper and (what looks like) caulk to seal in those expansion joints.
Newspaper breaks apart over time whether it gets wet or not, anyways.

Saying "if it wasn't for Katrina flooding would have never damaged the levees" is like saying "if it wasn't for traffic, that bridge in Minneapolis would have never been damaged.........Both Katrina and the traffic revealed structural flaws; both exposed engineering mistakes.

and yes the port needs to be open but 800000 people are not needed to keep a port open so if you move to new orleans and this happens to you dont run around blaming every1 just look in the mirror and blame your dumbass self.
thedefiantywc 2 years ago
And if you move to south Florida?( severe hurricane strikes 4X as often as NOLA), and if you move to L.A. on a major earthquake fault line, and if you move to tornado alley? and if you move to terrorist strike central (NYC) ? or if you move to a river flood plain?
Need I say more?
oran6es 2 years ago 7
I think you need to watch a few more videos, NYC's terrorists are the same one's who've spent almost 9 years covering it up!
rawn72 2 years ago
Do you blame people for living in tornado alley? Do you blame the people in LA who live on a fault line? The shut the hell up.

It's very difficult to feel capable of effecting change while living in New Orleans. It's like being in a very messy room and not knowing where to start cleaning.

London Now has hurricanes Huh? You're an IDIOT...
SFergie100 2 years ago
So hurricanes are the only source of flooding? I didn't know that... ;)
1000altoids 2 years ago
Comparing New Orleans to London and Holland is a joke. Neither London nor Holland have to worry about hurricanes.
bapabob 2 years ago
A joke? What's the funny part?
The comparison is very apt. Hurricanes along the U.S. Gulf Coast and major storms in the North Sea both cause severe weather and dangerous storm surges. Read up about the great North Sea storm of the Spring of 1953 and its effects on the Netherlands and the U.K. They got serious about flood protection. There's no technical reason the U.S. couldn't as well; thus far we simply haven't.
infrogmation 2 years ago 6
And yet they have much better protection from rising waters and flood risks.
wajmgirl 2 years ago
You obviously don't know much about the North Sea.
Now you stop being a joke and spend 10 min looking up North Sea storms
gmfutube 2 years ago

OramAndy 2 years ago
Yet another contradiction. Take a look at Myth 3. It says the fact that New Orleans is below sea level is false, that large parts of it are above sea level. Well, then it isn't completely false then is it?
"Large parts" is very subjective. Here's a fact that's not subjective: the AVERAGE ELEVATION of New Orleans is BELOW sea level.
I'm not really against a city on the coast that's below sea level...we have the technology to keep the water out. I'm against videos using false arguments to win =D
OramAndy 2 years ago 2
IIRC surveys show of the actual inhabited area, some 40% above sea level, 20% at sea level, and 40% below. Most the below area is suburbs developed in the 20th century by draining swampland, which has since subsided (same technology of draining and develping used even more widely in Florida).
"Sea level" by itself is not an indication of flood risk. Death Valley, over 250 feet below sea level, is one of the driest places in the country, while places thousands of feet up have flooded.
infrogmation 2 years ago 7
Also, another logical fallacy. If the levees are the cause of the flood, then it's obviously not the lack of wetlands causing floods.
Also, this video contradicts itself. It says New Orleans is in the right place economically (although the myth is that it's in the wrong place PHYSICALLY) because it's a major hub for commercial trade. But it also says that the commercialization of New Orleans (Oil interests, canals) have weakened it's defenses against floods.
OramAndy 2 years ago
Wetlands act as a buffer against storm surge, meaning that when the rush of water comes in, the wetlands lessen it's power and elevation, thus making what does reach the levees many times weaker than the initial surge.
We need wetlands to help, because obviously the levees aren't standing up as well as we'd like.
wajmgirl 2 years ago 4
Katrina WAS a natural disaster. It's not because the levees failed, it's because they didn't prevent. It could have been prevented, no doubt. But I get upset when over a thousand people lose their lives, and people point fingers.
Also, logical fallacy. Myth 2 = New Orleans is in the wrong place due to geography, but this video refutes that with economic facts, rather than geography facts. New Orleans is in the right place economically, but being below sea level on the coast is wrong physically.
OramAndy 2 years ago
As a former resident of New Orleans, and being very well connected, I can attest to the fact that the colapse of the levees was one of the reasons that New Orleans ended up under water on August 29, 2005. I know for a fact that the levees were built to withstand ONLY a category 3 hurricane, but the US governemnt pulled funding of the levee system AND the levee board has been charged with pocketing money that was meant to reinforce the levees. .
friedley52 2 years ago 6
OramAndy 2 years ago
Bravo for spreading the truth about the man-made destruction of New Orleans. It's very gratifying to see and hear all the pundits' myths debunked
ablrhome 2 years ago
What you state here is totally wrong. NOLA is way under sealevel. I know because I GPS'd the entire system. Readngs were negative, or below sealevel. Levees are built on ground that wobbles like jello when trucks pass. It's delta soil. The USACE did not screw up this city. If so, why hasn't other parts of the world fallen apart as NOLA. Think, NOLA has pumps running 24/7 pumping water OUT OF THE CITY. Hurricane or no hurricane, the city has water seeping in.
musicdick85 2 years ago
Half of New Orleans is at or WELL above sea level according to a recent joint study by Tulane and Xavier........As for the soil, any engineering course 101 teaches how to build on such soil......New Orleans is on a floodplain. 39 out of 50 of America's largest cities lie partly on a floodplain.
LeveesOrg 2 years ago
Is it a government problem or a state problem? Because the gov't usually provides something when the state taxes do not cover it. And nobody wants to pay higher taxes and usually vote down improvements to roads, bridges, etc; until they are falling apart.
Raenydyne 2 years ago
In 1965, Congress mandated the the USACE shall design and build the flood protection for New Orleans. It's the law.
LeveesOrg 2 years ago
The slow emergency response, (if any) was intentional, some will say they blew the levees intentionally. It is mainstream media that people who attempted to cross the bridge to higher ground in gretna were turned back and not allowed to leave. At Algiers point there was a clan of whites shooting blacks attempting to reach higher ground to the evacuation point on the westbank while inside the military control grid soldiers were disarming the people being held hostage by the GOV, no food, no watr.

westerling69, please watch the video and THEN post a response. The video had absolutely nothing to do with the documented agreed-upon failed response.
