I am female and I loved this guy's songwriting. I "got it" within hearing it twice. He had such talent. I am so glad he is still around today. Nobody could have sang these songs like Gilbert!
There's great truth in this heartbreaking song, but a truth that's nonetheless partial. We need never be entirely alone, however intense the feeling becomes. Loneliness is natural, a very real and mostly unavoidable part of life; but we can transcend it. It can happen when we identify ourselves too hard & too long with family/partners. But we're linked to everyone, to everything, to ourselves. That's the ultimate family, where all belong. In that sense loneliness is a powerful kind of illusion.
It was so difficult being a teenager at this time and secretly wanting to admit you loved this song in particular and Gilbert in general.
You faced the wrath of all your mates, similar to being a Mod but wanting a motorbike or being a fervent Stones fan and trying to admit Sgt Pepper's was a crap album!
As you get older though you get more truthful to yourself so here goes - This song is up there with the best of all time - Paul Bowden (Isle of Man)
What does "nothing rhymed" mean? This is one of those songs where it sounds like the singer is saying something important but nobody's quite sure what. And what is Bonaparte Chandy? But he has a pretty cool hat
@UbruStar its bonaparte SHANDY ,the words are a play on `napolean brandy` which is an expensive drink ,shandy (beer and lemonade) is inexpensive.gilberts lyrics are so incredibly english .the expression `bagsie i`m in goal` is something i would have said playing football as a child
@UbruStar thats the spirit of the fool (the kings joker always touches the true meaning), as we say: door het gat van de grap, fluit de waarheid (dutch)
This was my fave Gilbert song, a love everything about this song the lyrics, his sininging and yorkshire accent, the strings, the piano intro, wow tugs on my heart strings.
"Solo l'amare, solo il conoscere conta, non l'aver amato, non l'aver conosciuto. Dà angoscia,il vivere di un consumato amore. L'anima non cresce più...."
"When I'm drinking my Bonaparte Shandy, eating more than enough apple pies would I glance at my screen and see real human beings starve to death right in front of my eyes" Makes you think doesn't it? Makes you think just how lucky we are in the West. This song was written way back in 1971, but the problems of the third world were no different then than they are now.
rather this than the todaysmusic, realy love the tekst also! (altho i didnt excist at the time) ;)

The funny thing is his look was so weird at the time, but now it's absolutely contemporary.
A timeless classic in every way.
