1. i'm write my own shader. rendering is very fast. because for flames there is no need to calculate shadows (can not be said about the smoke). i don't remember exactly but 1-5 min for HD frame with volume step size 0.02.
2. no. i have does some tweaks. main parameter to tweak - Turbulence. also "Vortex confinment" is very important.
Could You share your parameters and mainly the shader?

Nice flame effect. How much time it took for rendering?...Is it the default pyro flame frm the shelf?...

did you use the combustion model for this or is it just density emission?

yes. combustion model is on by default when create flames from "Pyro" shelf. I'm used it.
