absolutely hilarious!! i cant believe i ran accross this! i love the NEWS FLASH music at the beginning and then it comes back at the end!! and the cloud at the beginning, ah, what great memories!! thanks for posting this awsum vid!!
LOVE IT!!!If I had all the time in the world I'd watch all these old classics plus I'd show my kids & grandkids what funny Really Is.The stuff they watch is not even funny
Hameln is 10 miles away from my hometown. Love this episode (pied piper is the man!) Me and my brother having a radio show on the local radio station in hameln and before we start to kick our music, the actually pied piper actor of Hameln has also a radio show (togheter with his son)
I remember this newsflash from the seventies, when I was a dedicated Sesame Street viewer. However, I'll never think about it as funny since reading, and then watching, The Sweet Hereafter.
huh this is so funny because i played te pied piper in a school play. i love this. my 2 of my bfs (best fiends.) brooklyn and brendan were in the town council
What a coincidence. I too played the Pied Piper once. But I don't off hand recall seeing this skit when I was a kid. It's pretty cool. Though Frank Oz uses a slightly higher voice here than usual. It's pretty easy to hear the voices of Richard Hunt and Jerry Nelson among the rats. Three other News Flashes I don't remember seeing are Aladdin, Jack Be Nimble, and Old Mother Hubbard. Someone please upload those.
"Hey...you're a frog! Far out!"..."Yeah, well, babe, I'm gonna lay down some music on the old flute here. The mice are gonna dig it, see and the mice are gonna follow me out of this hick town..."
Here are some more Sesame Street News Flashes I'd like to see. Mirror Mirror, Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves, George Washington's Father's Cherry Orchard, Princess And The Cookie, Humpty Dumpty, THe Old Woman Who Lived In A Shoe, and I guess that's it. Well, except for the one where Dr Nobel Price makes a robot replica of Kermit. That one was good.
And speaking of Humpty Dumpty, I noticed that Frank Oz almost always plays the lead roles in these fairy tales and nursery rhymes done in these special reports.
You know, I know I didn't know the history on this and it was hard to find these skits! The Sesame Street website is not helpful about finding older shows, even thogh, I tend to think that they would do very well if they put them on video from the first show to the present.
Sesame Workshop said that they're the company behind Sesame Street. But that's not true. Sesame Street was made by Jim Henson in 1969 and was sold to Sesame Workshop in 2001.
Oh yeah, that guy was as high as a kite man ("Call me Pied, baby, Pied") "I'm laying this stuff down and these mice just ain't pickin' it up, ya dig?" LOL!
Oh my God!! I laughed so hard at this, I almost hurt myself. I guess it's true they say none of this stuff is really for kids, but is for the adults, cause when I was little, I thought it was funny, but not THAT funny. When the mice are all dissing his music, it's hilarious!!!
I remember this so well. The pide piper looks and sounds just like my gang banger cousin.. I was so young... He and I watched this laughing.. My cousin was cracking up laughing... Needless to say, he smoked those funny cigerettes.... Wow... What a great time in Chi-town... I really miss it..
What's incredible is how this stuff lays dormant in one's mind for 30+ years, ony to be instantly recalled when seen again. Wow, great blast from the past. Sesame Street ruled the airwaves of my youth. Thanks for posting this.
Frank Oz as a beatnik is just too funny for words. "Hey, man, hey! Now I'm layin' this stuff down, and these mice just ain't pickin' it up, dig?" CLASSIC!!!
I don't suppose anyone has the News Flash where Rapunzel had a New York accent?
lol..this is definately one of Frank Oz' best performances...lol

KrazyKartoonKid 4 years ago
Actually, CTW and Jim Henson both co-created it in 1969.
wiley207 4 years ago
That beatnik is SO FUNNY! Frank Oz has a tendancy to steal the show in these news flash skits.
Also, this skit is actually from 1972, not 1971. I can tell because Richard Hunt performs some of the mice, and Richard Hunt joined the show in 1972.
wiley207 4 years ago
Wow! Kermit actually helped and was complimented in this one. He is usually messing up the nursery rhyme or getting dumped on by the characters.
