Gilmour is the type of player Toronto fans want. Tough, fearless, skilled and ruthless. There isn't one guy on this current Leaf team close to Gilmour in popularity. Kessel comes closest, but he plays the exact oppposite of Gilmour. Soft, meek, and mild. Thats why ones a winner, and the other hasn't come close to winning anything. Because nice guys finish last.
Doug Gilmour was a good player, but he's also a classic example of over-hype. He could just as easily be called a dirty player. At 1:02 that is a slew-foot, at 1:10 it is interference, at 1:20 it is boarding (the guy doesn't even have the puck), at 1:27 he leaves his feet big time to make a hit, and at 1:34 he tries to end McSorley's career by taking his knee out. Kind of shameful really.
@Tomdawg89 Well, I was there watching as an adult in both '93 and '94. They were dirty plays then too. I'm not against Gilmour, he was a great player, but the way he was worshiped is kind of ridiculous. On any other team (like when he was with Calgary) he was a good player but nothing amazing. Suddenly on the Leafs, and as soon as Don Cherry started plugging him people started going gaga for him. There are certainly a lot of players who belong in the Hall of Fame before him.
@canadianplanter You're right Gilmour was a good, not great, player in Calgary. And a lot of the recognition he received with the Leafs was due to the Toronto media going overboard with him. Still, in fairness to Gilmour, he scored 238 points in 166 games in the 93 and 94 seasons, which was the most out of anyone in the NHL except for Adam Oates. And he followed that up with 63 points in 39 playoff games, which was the most out of anyone in the NHL. During that time Gilmour was a great player.
Crazyhorserunningbat, you're an idiot. He was never convicted of the charge. The charges were dismissed and he counter-sued. He is definitely not a registered sex offender.
Doug Gilmour: Drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the seventh round of the 1982 draft. Gilmour was implicated in a nasty civil suit involving sexual misconduct and a thirteen-year-old babysitter. He was quickly traded away to the Calgary Flames in 1988.
He was more or less traded to take the public heat off St. Louis and improve the team's public image. A shameful hurdle that Gilmour never got over. He apparently paid the childs family $1 million in an out of court settlement.
@CrazyHorseRunningBat Hmm your story checks out. But why try and ruin his legacy. Everybody makes mistakes, he was a brilliant hockey player and sure inspired a lot people like myself.
SEXUAL CHARGES. A civil lawsuit claims that star St. Louis Blues center Doug Gilmour had sexual intercourse repeatedly with a 14-year-old girl and seeks at least $1 million from the NHL player, his wife and the team. It also alleges that the Blues, negotiated payments to the girl and her family, were secretly attempting to trade Gilmour, 25. The suit charges that Gilmour's wife, Robyne; Blues President Jack Quinn, and the Blues ''knew or should have known'' about the sexual abuse.
Doug Gilmour is a registered child sex offender. At age 24 this POS raped his 14 year old baby sitter and then paid her family off and moved to Calgary.
"Killer" is a "Babykiller" and is known by his teamates as a "Kmart Shopper" due to his preference to young girls.
He should have his face beat in and sent to jail.
@deltagammaxx I'm a Habs fan, but I gotta agree with you. He's fn Dougie! He's the man! 92-93 was probably the best hockey season ever, and I'm not just saying that because my Habs won. The aura of hockey that whole season was truly palpable.
Doug Gilmour is my uncle. No lies. Legally he is divorced from my aunt now but i'm still related because my cousin is his daughter. He is freaking awesome.
in his era, Gilmour was inferior to Cam Neeley, Wayne Gretzky, Steve Yzerman, Mark Messier, Eric LIndros, Sergei Federov, Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, Jaromir Jagr, Ron Francis, Pavel Bure, Mats Sundin, Mike Modano, Peter Stastny
He probably was the best all around player in those two years. He could do EVERYTHING (except fight) but when you've got Clark and Baummer watching your back it's no biggie.
You're right in a sense, based on pure skill those players were better, but based on pure work ethic, vision, and clutch play it's up for debate.
Gilmour led that team almost all on his own, and it was remarkable to watch, he was everywhere, doing everything at once it seemed. They needed a second line centre to help him out, John Cullen and Mike Krushelnyski weren't up to the task.
In my opinion it was his vision and hockey smarts that really separated him from the pack.
One of the 10 greatest ever??? anyone who can honestly say that hes in the company of Gretzky, Howe, Lemieux, Roy, Yzerman, Messier, Francis, Sawchuk, Brodeur, Borque, Richard, Mikita, Dryden, Dionne Hull, Sakic.....is being rediculous
very selective about when he would want to scrap.the Hamrlik fight was just such an example.I loved when he challenged the L.A. bench and acted as though he was 6 3" 230 lbs.
I with ya man. That season was magical. It's been years since I saw this footage and it almost brings tears to my eyes. There must be a devilsh curse on the Leafs. That year was their year. The penguins were out and the wings, after what is still the best playoff series I've ever seen. Fucking Gretzky. He played what he described the best game he ever had in game 7 at the gardens and by doing so derailed a habs/leafs final and what could have been the sweetest moment of my childhood.
@OneEyedKeys True; '93 playoffs were filled with suprises, upsets, & overtime games :-) After the Penguins were knocked out, I really started to believe that it was the Leafs' destiny to beat Montreal for the Stanley Cup that year. Miss you Dougie, havent had heart or a team like the 93 crew. Every game exciting, hard fought wins. Leaf Nation, a cup is on the horizon. Got a great coach, spectacular goalie, & Fletcher will leave hockey on a high note by setting this team up just like he did in 90-91. Believe.
how dare you? how dare you insult the great don cherry? nah just kidding but come on cherry's the man! ridiculous ties, outrageous comments, whats not to like ha ha?
and what do you mean no one likes him? youre the first person ive ever seen who doesnt
Agreed. No one ever insult Cherry. He is so amazing and his movies are spectacular. Yes he does some pretty dumb things, but hockey would not be like it is now without him.
Sabres Suck. Doug Gilmour's Stanley Cup in 89 with the Flames is more than the Sabres have ever won and will ever win. Buffalo is a looser city. And Ive been to Buffalo: The only fans that make noise in Buffalo are Leaf fans. Buffalo is a ghost town! Fuck you Sabres fan your city sucks. There's a 5 year waiting period to get Leafs season tickets and probably a 5 year period before Buffalo looses its NFL team. You should be greatful that Gilmour even played for your sad Sabres team!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
100% agree and i live in Canada... Don Chery is downright the most pathetic being to ever comment hockey... all he ever did as a hockey coach was to get his ass handed over to him by the Quebecers..
Gilmour didnt mess with anyones children, the babysitter incident was nothing but a extortion case. He was never charged with any crime, the civil case against him was dropped for having no evidence, the families lawyer was charged trying to extort money from the blues and Gilmour. Even the St.Louis county prosecutor saw the case as a blantant attempt at extortion. In the end, St.Louis fans chased out there best all round player.
Cherry isn't right about much, but for two years doug gilmour was the best player in hockey. Do you think there's enough money in MLSE to finace a human cloning experiment?
Which two years was Gilmour the best? He never won any scoring titles, the leafs never won any cups, and little dougy got beat up everytime he was forced to finish what he started. Cherry only liked him because he's from the same home town.
Gilmour the best, LOL! Never even made the olympic hockey teams. Try again
If the NHL had gone to the Olympics in '94, Gilmour would have been a top 6 forward. His career should be remembered as a very good two way forward who for two years was one of the best in the world because he overachieved offensively on a Leafs' team where he played every power play because the Leafs had nobody else.
I was always a huge Gilmour fan, and his run from 92-94 was pretty amazing, but that's his career as I see it.
He'd never have been chosen to go to any Olympic team. Gilmour is so devoid of any olympic spirit, no coach with any smarts would ever pick him. You know who reminds me of Gilmour? Tucker. Tucker, a chicken who likes to start trouble but hides behind other players when the going gets tough. Can mouth off but that is it. You admire someone like that? Doesn't say much for you then. He can push around teenage girls but not men. Sad
In the 87 cup where Lemieux scored the winner? Yeah I just looked it up. The thing is with so many stars on a team you wouldn't notice gilmour because a mediocre player wouldn't stand out on that team. He must have been ridden the bench the whole time because who would have known he was on the team. I bet you an idiot like him tells everyone he made the team. Sorry pervie doug, no one remembers you.
yeah but juzu4me u had guys like gretz mess lemeiux fuhr coffey bourque hawerchuk all in there primes and they nearly beat maybe the greatest russian team ever assembled as well. There will never be hockey played on that high level again like it was that series!
...and you where the teenaged girl he pushed around then? That just shows bad taste myjiz4you! He's still one of the greatest hockey players that ever lived.
He never won any scoring titles you idiot. And he never played for Canada ever. And he was like a little girl on the ice. He couldn't fight his way out of a wet paper towel but he sure could mouth off
You can't understand what I was trying to say, yet you call me an idiot! Doug's game wasn't about scoring titles, it was about playing the game the way it was meant to be played. I never called him a fighter either. After all, the man was 160 lbs soaking wet! As for "mouthing off", that is what exactly what you're doing, and given that you're doing so hidden behind the relative anonymity of the internet makes you the biggest "little girl" I know.
I remember back in 93 after the season was over (Thanks Kerry Fraser you piece of SHIT!) everyone wanted to get those flat blade Hespler Gilmour sticks but they were around $80 at crappy tire.
We need more players like this in the game today, only 160 pounds but with the heart of a lion. Gilmour never quit and always played until he had nothing left, i miss guys like him everyone should play with the ammount of heart and determination this guy has.
Gilmour simply the greatest, I love when he tried takin on the whole LA Kings bench after McSorley hit him in game 1 of the conf finals, nobody had more heart than Dougie
Nice, this is one of the video tapes that I have that still plays flawless of the first 5 (other than the original). Nice upload! I should upload some more Don Cherry, I just never get around to it.

Believe.
sweetmohawklady 3 years ago
Gilmour helped Leafs inch the closest to the cup since '67. Love what he did for us.

Douggie and Felix helped us "inch" to the cup...but I doubt we'll ever get it again..haha

how dare you? how dare you insult the great don cherry? nah just kidding but come on cherry's the man! ridiculous ties, outrageous comments, whats not to like ha ha?
and what do you mean no one likes him? youre the first person ive ever seen who doesnt
goleafsgo1793 3 years ago
ive heard many canadians make fun of him before on online message boards and other places.
SabresFan6130 3 years ago
Agreed. No one ever insult Cherry. He is so amazing and his movies are spectacular. Yes he does some pretty dumb things, but hockey would not be like it is now without him.
Giratina70 3 years ago
yeah thats why you're always watching his videos..shit sabres..bums now ever since briere and drury left
calebboy74 3 years ago
Who cares how he leans in his chair you fuckin queer. Hes a Canadian legend and hes loved by all except for fags like you
Stankin08 3 years ago
haha, wow. canadian legend. id be proud of that. ; )
SabresFan6130 3 years ago
Sabres Suck. Doug Gilmour's Stanley Cup in 89 with the Flames is more than the Sabres have ever won and will ever win. Buffalo is a looser city. And Ive been to Buffalo: The only fans that make noise in Buffalo are Leaf fans. Buffalo is a ghost town! Fuck you Sabres fan your city sucks. There's a 5 year waiting period to get Leafs season tickets and probably a 5 year period before Buffalo looses its NFL team. You should be greatful that Gilmour even played for your sad Sabres team!

If don cherry is seriously considered a legend up there, canada is hands down the most pathetic country in the world.

100% agree and i live in Canada... Don Chery is downright the most pathetic being to ever comment hockey... all he ever did as a hockey coach was to get his ass handed over to him by the Quebecers..

Who's a legend from America?
George Bush? I'd shoot myself if he represented my country.

nhl hochey should be played the way he played.

doug gilmour was awesome, he could make plays, body check and play excellent defense. The guy was a complete package.
brownpimp88 3 years ago
Gilmour didnt mess with anyones children, the babysitter incident was nothing but a extortion case. He was never charged with any crime, the civil case against him was dropped for having no evidence, the families lawyer was charged trying to extort money from the blues and Gilmour. Even the St.Louis county prosecutor saw the case as a blantant attempt at extortion. In the end, St.Louis fans chased out there best all round player.

Any of you people remember why he left St. Louis? Why he was FORCED to leave? I hate guys who mess with other people's children.

Cherry isn't right about much, but for two years doug gilmour was the best player in hockey. Do you think there's enough money in MLSE to finace a human cloning experiment?

lol yeah clone Clark and the rest of the boys from 93

"potvin to the bench. leafs, six attackers. it's in the corner, gilmour comes up with it. gilmour...clarke...SCORES!!!!!"

Try again
juzu4me 3 years ago
r u kidding gilmour carried that team on his back! dont chirp him.... 4 his size he was an excelent player
theface19 3 years ago 4
If the NHL had gone to the Olympics in '94, Gilmour would have been a top 6 forward. His career should be remembered as a very good two way forward who for two years was one of the best in the world because he overachieved offensively on a Leafs' team where he played every power play because the Leafs had nobody else.
I was always a huge Gilmour fan, and his run from 92-94 was pretty amazing, but that's his career as I see it.
Moisanite 3 years ago
He'd never have been chosen to go to any Olympic team. Gilmour is so devoid of any olympic spirit, no coach with any smarts would ever pick him. You know who reminds me of Gilmour? Tucker. Tucker, a chicken who likes to start trouble but hides behind other players when the going gets tough. Can mouth off but that is it. You admire someone like that? Doesn't say much for you then. He can push around teenage girls but not men. Sad
juzu4me 3 years ago
didnt gilmour play in the 87 canada cup?
raj2007ca 3 years ago
In the 87 cup where Lemieux scored the winner? Yeah I just looked it up. The thing is with so many stars on a team you wouldn't notice gilmour because a mediocre player wouldn't stand out on that team. He must have been ridden the bench the whole time because who would have known he was on the team. I bet you an idiot like him tells everyone he made the team. Sorry pervie doug, no one remembers you.
juzu4me 3 years ago
yeah but juzu4me u had guys like gretz mess lemeiux fuhr coffey bourque hawerchuk all in there primes and they nearly beat maybe the greatest russian team ever assembled as well. There will never be hockey played on that high level again like it was that series!
raj2007ca 3 years ago
...and you where the teenaged girl he pushed around then? That just shows bad taste myjiz4you! He's still one of the greatest hockey players that ever lived.
Armmaggeddon 3 years ago
Scoring titles? Cups? Shows how much you know about hockey! Gilmour was what hockey was all about, myjiz4you.
Armmaggeddon 3 years ago
He never won any scoring titles you idiot. And he never played for Canada ever. And he was like a little girl on the ice. He couldn't fight his way out of a wet paper towel but he sure could mouth off
juzu4me 3 years ago
You can't understand what I was trying to say, yet you call me an idiot! Doug's game wasn't about scoring titles, it was about playing the game the way it was meant to be played. I never called him a fighter either. After all, the man was 160 lbs soaking wet! As for "mouthing off", that is what exactly what you're doing, and given that you're doing so hidden behind the relative anonymity of the internet makes you the biggest "little girl" I know.

I remember back in 93 after the season was over (Thanks Kerry Fraser you piece of SHIT!) everyone wanted to get those flat blade Hespler Gilmour sticks but they were around $80 at crappy tire.

haha I went out and bought one solely for that reason
bsdaemon666 4 years ago
We need more players like this in the game today, only 160 pounds but with the heart of a lion. Gilmour never quit and always played until he had nothing left, i miss guys like him everyone should play with the ammount of heart and determination this guy has.

The media is way too in love with the Maple Leafs in this country...there are other teams. Still, loved Doug Gilmour when he played.
