can i ask how you got such rich colours in your photos, and also that last shot how did you get the flowers coloured and the background black and white?
@PhotoGavin Can you post a video explaining how your edit your images in photoshop giving them that awesome looking color and saturation like you have at 2:33?
@nad1m It always rises smile to me see photographers being shy on street photographing. I am self photographer and the street photographing can be very tough for many, that they can not even take photos at all. I have seen many new photographers getting lessons for that. Basicly it is that they get a 50mm lense where they have 1.8-2.8 aperture and the focus is locked to nearest position. Then they are asked to shoot ten different persons from street. You really need to go 30-40cm from their face
OMG! the photo's are amazing! great job! I also love your editing, can you please tell me few of your favourite editing techniques? I especially loved the photo's on 1.57, 2.15, 2.36, 3.58, (lol nearly all of them!)
Hey Gavin, Nice videos !!! Quick question , when you do your 15 mins video I see you mostly have a 50mm lens rather than 35mm. DO you prefer the 50mm over the 25 mm ?? Again Thank You
True. I'm off to the city of Bath, Somerset next week and was thinking about shooting a 15 minute photo challenge. But a guy walking around with a camera being followed by a girl with a video camera is just asking for trouble.
@PhotoGavin That paranoia is just so stupid that you can not even make a street photographing in different countries, especially UK. The real terrorists (the country leaders) are just controlling citizens by that causing a fear and then people is easy to control. Push their civil rights down and same time protect own interests. If someone really would like to attack somewhere, there are such gear what just are so hidden that you can not even notice if they shoot video or photos.
I love Taormina I go there more than once a year, Gavin you must have even came to Malta it is just few hours away by Catamaran. It would be one of the best experiencs both for you and Maltese photographers to meet you. You ae great.
@PhotoGavin It's great that you do a lot of these with a "lower end" camera and lens, because its gear that most of us are more likely to own. Its great to see the amazing pictures you take, without thinking that I'd never be able to take that because I don't have enough gear!
Keep up all the good work - I love all of your tutorials, and they're often my first go-to.
WOW i dident know my 400D could do so much im going to try this in my local town, i need to learn photoshop more as it seems you have great colours and texture in your photos.
Nice photos in Taormina. How about reveiling the camera settins and tutorial on the photoshop work, you really get nice colour contrasts which wouldn't have come straight out of the 400d..
nice and i bet you used photoshop to make those pictures really looking great! If you would like to visit my website i would be honored. i will feature you no problem if you'd like
excellent Gavin, simple video but very informative no the less it is nice to see how your approach, and all in 15mins excellent. the photos look great, thanks again.
Gavin Hoey is great at photoshop check out some of his other tutorials here on his channel. I have learnt more about photoshop from his videos than any book has taught me so far. He also does work for Digital Photo magazine and their cover DVD's often have great tutorials from him and the other staff members. Well worth a watch, excellent learning tools.
Yeah i also learnt a lot from him, but its more like textures stuffs, sky replacements etc, i was just wondering how he works especially on the colours, but anyway, i'll check his website :)
But Gavin you call it a 15 min photo challenge but the video is only 6:07 seconds. You have some time left. LOL. J/K. Love all the 15 min photo challenges. They are quite inspiring. Keep up the good work!
Long time viewer, but this is my first time commenting. I just wanted to write to tell you that what you're doing is really inspiring! Your emphasis on what's possible with just basic camera equipment (one fixed lens, possibly a flash) is excellent! Too often people get caught up in the "gear" and not on taking advantage of what they have. I love your photos, and I encourage you to keep the tutorials up! (particularly the 15 min series and the studio stuff!)
Photos are amazing Gavin. Always trying to get inside your head to see how you see, and trying now to practise that in my own shots, Enjoy all your stuff, take care.
I can't believe it!! I am going to be getting an EOS 500D with a 50mm 1.8 II and will be going to Rome, Italy over christmas. Will be trying this 15min challenge out and send results
ooohhh, you will LOVE that combination! that's what i have and that particular lens is one i use most often. i LOVE it! Hope you enjoy your stay and get some good pics
I dislike busy photos with to much going on, so I'm always trying to simplify what I see.
I do that by making use of composition (rule of thirds) depth of field and in a location like this waiting for just the right moment to press the shutter.
There's a great photos everywhere, you just have to learn to see them. That's the challenge I enjoy the most.
I do comissioned videos (search for "smick" to see some) and I have been invited to one or two locations to do 15 minutes challenges (coming soon) but this video was basically me on my holiday
It's really good, but... It looks like you're using way too much photoshop. After watching all of your challenge videos, it seems as if the photos you've taken are only good because of using photoshop. Pls, show the original pictures you've taken before the photoshop version.
@vincentgravel some guys don't really know what photoshop is for or how a photograph should be treated... they don't see as another tool they think photoshop is just tricks, magic or voodoo... XD

Being able to see what the subject on video and then in your photograph is interesting, it shows how much processing you do.

I see you use a DSLR camera, have you ever used a bridge camera and if so what do you think of them?
I own a Fuji s1730 which offers me 12mp and 15x optical zoom, i find it great but i'm not sure how it compares to a DSLR.
From following your videos i have found i can do it all apart from shoot in RAW... thats a draw back that i now find!!!
Even on the bridge camera i can control aperture , shutter speed, exposure, and white balance and you get 720p HD movie.
What's your opinion???
