  • i'm italian :D:D nice photos...:D

  • What lens did you use for those pictures?

  • Are all these photos just raw pictures straight from your camera? Or did you enhanced them already for this video?

  • I like the background music.. what is the title? (:

  • hi what settings did you use for the picture at 3:09?

  • one of my favourite photo challenges! =D

  • At 2:34, the photo of all the paintings going up the stairs, what did you do to edit that? i.e. there is blue on the stairs themselves

  • 1:00 woman looks at you like you're crazy!

  • can i ask how you got such rich colours in your photos, and also that last shot how did you get the flowers coloured and the background black and white?

  • bravo bravissimo...it's funny when you realize it was a library...

    greatings from Roma..

  • do you edit images or this is how it comes out. i been shooting for awhile but getting that type result requires some serious skills. plz let know

  • @PhotoGavin Can you post a video explaining how your edit your images in photoshop giving them that awesome looking color and saturation like you have at 2:33?

    Thanks

  • How do your pictures come out so full of color? Do you apply like an HDR effect to it or recolor them in photoshop?

  • How do you give your images that lovely blue hint to them?

  • Canon 400D with 50 mm f1.8 =) exactly my kit

  • i want to see what you do to the photos to make them look like they do when you show them to us

  • your photos turn out great!!!!

do you do a lot of post production?

  • Comment removed

  • I'm saving for a Rebel T1i and a 50mm lens for Christmas and your videos not only teach me alot but also inspire me so very much.. Thank you

  • Gavin, I loved the images, thanks for posting the videos.

  • yeah .... my beautiful sicily ...thanks for sharing

  • was that a Canon 24-70mm 2.8L lens you used?

  • Being able to see what the subject on video and then in your photograph is interesting, it shows how much processing you do.

  • I see you use a DSLR camera, have you ever used a bridge camera and if so what do you think of them?

I own a Fuji s1730 which offers me 12mp and 15x optical zoom, i find it great but i'm not sure how it compares to a DSLR.

From following your videos i have found i can do it all apart from shoot in RAW... thats a draw back that i now find!!!

Even on the bridge camera i can control aperture , shutter speed, exposure, and white balance and you get 720p HD movie.

    What's your opinion???

  • Anyone see the industrial size bottle of nutella at 4:04 ?

  • lol at when you where taking a pic of the dog

  • @nad1m It always rises smile to me see photographers being shy on street photographing. I am self photographer and the street photographing can be very tough for many, that they can not even take photos at all. I have seen many new photographers getting lessons for that. Basicly it is that they get a 50mm lense where they have 1.8-2.8 aperture and the focus is locked to nearest position. Then they are asked to shoot ten different persons from street. You really need to go 30-40cm from their face

  • OMG! the photo's are amazing! great job! I also love your editing, can you please tell me few of your favourite editing techniques? I especially loved the photo's on 1.57, 2.15, 2.36, 3.58, (lol nearly all of them!)

  • Hey Gavin, Nice videos !!! Quick question , when you do your 15 mins video I see you mostly have a 50mm lens rather than 35mm. DO you prefer the 50mm over the 25 mm ?? Again Thank You

  • Good stuff! Very inspirational.

  • i love your colour editing. did you use polarizing filter or something? and did you shoot in jpeg or raw?

  • Home!

    hi from italy gavin!:)

i like a lot your vids and tutorials, thanks for spending time doing this!

    chiara

  • Shame to think if you walked down any British high street like that you would be arrested as a terrorist or dodgy geezer taking naughty pics.

  • True. I'm off to the city of Bath, Somerset next week and was thinking about shooting a 15 minute photo challenge. But a guy walking around with a camera being followed by a girl with a video camera is just asking for trouble.

  • @PhotoGavin That paranoia is just so stupid that you can not even make a street photographing in different countries, especially UK. The real terrorists (the country leaders) are just controlling citizens by that causing a fear and then people is easy to control. Push their civil rights down and same time protect own interests. If someone really would like to attack somewhere, there are such gear what just are so hidden that you can not even notice if they shoot video or photos.

  • hahaha

  • I love Taormina I go there more than once a year, Gavin you must have even came to Malta it is just few hours away by Catamaran. It would be one of the best experiencs both for you and Maltese photographers to meet you. You ae great.

  • Malta, that sounds like fun.

  • this place reminds me of assassin's creed 2.. anyways, nice take gavin :D

  • no i ment 400D look at 0:35 of the video.

  • Correct that was my 400D. I'll often take it with me as it's much more portable then some of my other cameras.

  • @PhotoGavin

Gavin this is silly but I always think why don't you wear that camera strap around your neck . OR

Is it only me who is clumsy enough to drop things?

Love allllllll your videos and photos and u as a woderful human being :)

  • @PhotoGavin It's great that you do a lot of these with a "lower end" camera and lens, because its gear that most of us are more likely to own. Its great to see the amazing pictures you take, without thinking that I'd never be able to take that because I don't have enough gear!

Keep up all the good work - I love all of your tutorials, and they're often my first go-to.

  • WOW i dident know my 400D could do so much im going to try this in my local town, i need to learn photoshop more as it seems you have great colours and texture in your photos.

  • i guess you meant 40D

  • Gavin

Please ignore that last message I see you have a recent tute up

    Cheers

  • Gavin

Nice photos in Taormina. How about reveiling the camera settins and tutorial on the photoshop work, you really get nice colour contrasts which wouldn't have come straight out of the 400d..

  • nice and i bet you used photoshop to make those pictures really looking great! If you would like to visit my website i would be honored. i will feature you no problem if you'd like

    for free of course!

    Cheers!

  • excellent Gavin, simple video but very informative no the less it is nice to see how your approach, and all in 15mins excellent. the photos look great, thanks again.

  • Haha! taking pictures of random people! and them not knowing! lol

  • Thank you Gavin...

  • thanks Gavin makes me want to go out and shoot and edit today!

  • Hi Gavin,

Great and inspiring tutorials. Could you explain what gear - model of canon camera and lens you are using for your 15 minute challanges?

  • :32

  • Its on the bottom right at 0:33 Its a Canon 400D with a Canon 50mm F1.8 lens. Hope this helps...

  • beautiful shots. quite an inspiration to travel photogs that a lot can be done in 15 mins... w/ the help of hours of PS of course.

  • Great video, thanks for sharing your knowledge

    Cheers

  • Amazing Photos, Gavin!!!!

    Congrats!

    Make more tutorials Gavin...

Your tutorials help me too much!

Sorry for the poor english, i'm 14 and i'm from Brazil!

  • My only questions is (sorry if it sounds stupid to you) but how do you make the colours looks so pro??

i mean, do you work it out on photoshop? lightroom? what tools are the best?

  • 6:03 might give you a clue :-)

Gavin Hoey is great at photoshop check out some of his other tutorials here on his channel. I have learnt more about photoshop from his videos than any book has taught me so far. He also does work for Digital Photo magazine and their cover DVD's often have great tutorials from him and the other staff members. Well worth a watch, excellent learning tools.

  • Yeah i also learnt a lot from him, but its more like textures stuffs, sky replacements etc, i was just wondering how he works especially on the colours, but anyway, i'll check his website :)

  • Hey i was just wondering how come all of the photos have quite a grunge look to them how have u edited them to look like this and what with?

    Thanks

  • But Gavin you call it a 15 min photo challenge but the video is only 6:07 seconds. You have some time left. LOL. J/K. Love all the 15 min photo challenges. They are quite inspiring. Keep up the good work!

  • fantastic video, another great video which inspires...

  • Great stuff! Can't wait to see those in PS tutorial:)any chances?

  • how does your voice recorded by your video camera even you're far?

btw nice capture and place too

  • The audio is recorded on a small digital recorder in my pocket. It's then mixed back in at the video editing stage.

  • Long time viewer, but this is my first time commenting. I just wanted to write to tell you that what you're doing is really inspiring! Your emphasis on what's possible with just basic camera equipment (one fixed lens, possibly a flash) is excellent! Too often people get caught up in the "gear" and not on taking advantage of what they have. I love your photos, and I encourage you to keep the tutorials up! (particularly the 15 min series and the studio stuff!)

  • Spot on. Gear is important, but so is the ability to see a good photo.

  • are you using any effects or editing afterwards?

  • Always the best!!!

  • Do you have a filter on the 50mm lens?

  • your are good

  • love love love your EYE

  • hey gavin how do you get that effect you have on all those photo's?

  • Yes, whatever that golden effect is, it looks incredible. Is it just the lighting?

    Thanks.

  • The lighting was indeed very warm, but a slight tweak of white balance was needed on a couple of shots.

  • Photos are amazing Gavin. Always trying to get inside your head to see how you see, and trying now to practise that in my own shots, Enjoy all your stuff, take care.

  • how do you get that vignette effect. awesome!!!

  • As I shoot in RAW the vignette is applued in Adobe Camera RAW. Have look back at my older tutorials for more details.

  • I can't believe it!! I am going to be getting an EOS 500D with a 50mm 1.8 II and will be going to Rome, Italy over christmas. Will be trying this 15min challenge out and send results

  • ooohhh, you will LOVE that combination! that's what i have and that particular lens is one i use most often. i LOVE it! Hope you enjoy your stay and get some good pics

  • I look forward to seeing them. I've not been to Rome, but it's on my list of places to visit.

  • Hi Gavin, do you mind sharing what you look for when you're outside on a photoshoot like this? Your photos were beautiful to say the least =)

  • I dislike busy photos with to much going on, so I'm always trying to simplify what I see.

I do that by making use of composition (rule of thirds) depth of field and in a location like this waiting for just the right moment to press the shutter.

There's a great photos everywhere, you just have to learn to see them. That's the challenge I enjoy the most.

  • Do you get paid for doing this stuff?

  • No.

I do comissioned videos (search for "smick" to see some) and I have been invited to one or two locations to do 15 minutes challenges (coming soon) but this video was basically me on my holiday

  • Ahh. Okay.

Just seems like 1,000 miles is a ways to go just for a 15 min challenge. :D

  • It's really good, but... It looks like you're using way too much photoshop. After watching all of your challenge videos, it seems as if the photos you've taken are only good because of using photoshop. Pls, show the original pictures you've taken before the photoshop version.

    Thx.

  • "only good because of using photoshop" ?!?!

You are a funny guy... Gavin is a professional photographer.

lol, you made my day joking around like that!

  • @vincentgravel some guys don't really know what photoshop is for or how a photograph should be treated... they don't see as another tool they think photoshop is just tricks, magic or voodoo... XD

  • agreed.

  • It's really simple. I take & make photos for me and I like them just how they are.

It's always a pleasure to hear that others enjoy my photos as much as I do, but I know they're not to everyones taste.

The world would be very dull if we all liked the same things.

  • show us the trick you made for the last foto with the flouers and the black&white background

  • It's all done in CS4's Camera RAW. May be I'll slot in a "how to" video next week.

  • Great job!

  • Love your 15min series.

  • And I really enjoy making them. More are coming.

  • Very enjoyable video with some remarkable shots!

How many walk-in-fronts did you have to slay to capture that dog?

  • It was worth the wait. In fact I returned a few days later and the same dog was sitting in the same shop door.

  • Looks like a lovely place. Nicer weather than here anyway! XD

  • pretty place.

  • nice gavin! more tutorials please!

  • So that's where you'we been hidding for the past few weeks! Lucky you!!! Great pics

  • Thanks so much Gavin! How did you get the background in the last shot B&W and keep the flowers colour?

Keep up the vidoes and thanks for sharing.

  • It is done in Photoshop. He has a tutorial on his channel. I think the video is called "Photoshop quick tips - hue/saturation"

  • It can also be done in Camera RAW using the adjustment brush. :-)

  • nice, thanks

  • love the shot @ 4:17
