I heard McKellars and others and nobody comes close.........
I know we all have childhood favourites etc but we arent convincing anyone i'm afraid.....better singers oft come along.......Ainsley is hard to beat.
@EffulgenceDiva The ABC Australian Broadcasting Co via the Dymocks shops ABC departments had it in as A title CD "Where E'r you walk" a couple years ago by various artists. Had about 5 Kenneth Makellar tracks on it. All GFH. Double Album Ive lost mine so I cant upload. Sry mate.
Listen to Mark Padmore's version for comparison. I really like his rendition too. It's a bit slower and you can really sink your teeth into the emotion of the accompanying music!
I have this recording of Jeptha on LP (need to copy it), and it's still one of the best. I like a bit more heft in Handel tenors, whether or not that's authentic, but Ainsley is so good in this (the whole oratorio, though here in particular) that I hardly care.
Could somebody maybe please make a playlist of what they would consider to be the FINEST, FINEST selections from Handel's many operas?? (Obviously, such a selection would include this wonderful piece!) If you do so, please send me a message, but it would really be great, as right now, I don't have the time to dig through the operas myself!
Jephtha is my favourite oratorio. I really love Handel, wish I could have met him

try these:
Ode for St. Cecilia's Day
every valley shall be exalted
for unto us a child is born
Ombra mai Fu
There are more (obviously) but these are the ones that come to mind at the moment.

I don't know if I'm right in the meaning of "FINEST"....but I would add :
-"tu del ciel ministro elletto" from il Trionfo(Dessay's version is BREATHTAKING !)
-"Cease Ruler of the day " from Hercules(listen to DiDonato)
-"Se vago rio" (Arminta e Filide)try Jaroussky
-"Ferma l'ali" la Resurrezione (Bartoli for example)
-"As steals the morn" L'allegro, il penseroso ed il moderato (Bostridge and...)
...and so many!!
