@dychui While I am Hispanic, I don't know the language. Being a honors-type student who didn't really hang out with other Hispanic kids, I had no reason to. Until I met a girl last year, and now am just crazy about her. Her English is impeccable, but I want to surprise her someday and try a Spanish conversation. A long and maybe irrelevant story, but I wanted to share something more encouraging than wisecracks. Thank you for these videos.
You have a interest in linguistics and you believe in the critical period theory. Which century are you from? That's like saying you are into science and believe that the Sun revolves around the Earth.
Hey! I'm Argentinian and I love hearing people from other countries trying to speak Spanish. My mama always tells me that Spanish it's the most beautiful language and the most difficult to speak, too. Anyway, I'm hearing you right now and you speak very well indeed! But I don't know if you know that the sort of Spanish language you're talking is European Spanish. I said I am Argentinian, so I speak Castilian. In Argentina we don't use the word EXCUSADO, we use the word INODORO, for example...
Great video! You started learning a foreign language around the same time as I did, except that I learned French instead of Spanish. Like you, I had a fair (strong) grammatical knowledge of the language. However, I've stopped taking French since Gr.10...I wished I had continued to learn though. :( I'm glad you kept on learning! There are now a lot of jobs that require or having French (or Spanish) as an asset.
Daniel, you Spanish is great. I am still learning; ultimately, I want to become fluent as well. The problem I have is that in most cases, I still think in English and translate into Spanish. I don't know how to rid myself of this habit. BTW, I also have Breaking Out of Beginner's Spanish as well.
You need to focus on perfecting your spanish accent. You speak spanish with a chinese/oriental accent & when you speak english, the chinese accent is barely noticeable. How strange is that!
@Trinax14 1) His Spanish accent is spot on--I studied abroad in Spain, so I know what it is supposed to sound like. 2) He does not speak Spanish with a Chinese accent. 3) There is no such thing as an "Oriental" accent. 4) He does not have a Chinese accent when he speaks English--he was born in California!
@Trinax14: 1) His Spanish accent is excellent--I studied abroad in Spain, so I know what it is supposed to sound like. 2) He does not speak Spanish with a Chinese accent. 3) There is no such thing as an "Oriental" accent. 4) He does not speak English with a Chinese accent (he was born in California!).
I took the AP Spanish test right after the Stat test so I was so tired that when it was time for the voice recording section, I fell asleep from exhaustion and didn't complete it. Oddly enough, I still passed with a 3.
@allmy459 That's white common...I think most people's voices change at least a little when they speak a different language. I speak four languages, and I sound a bit different when I speak each one! :D
This really encouraged me to keep Spanish as a subject and pursue it further. (: I'm also going to Valencia for 2 weeks as a short home-stay student, though it's a short time, hopefully it'll improve my overall listening and speaking. ¡Gracias!

@jkims15 Hi Jkims15 :) I'm so happy you enjoyed my videos, and thank you for watching! Learning Spanish in Granada must be challenging! I love the Andalusian accent but definitely it is sometimes harder to understand. Hope to see you around here more often!
That was a great, thorough video you put together. Probably one of the best on spanish by a non-native speaker. I'm also trying to learn spanish. I believe that my accent is not so bad but my grammar and vocabulary needs some work. I'm hoping to study abroad next year in Spain and by doing so, become more fluent verbally. Enjoyed your video and thanks
@ficklepicklejuice Hi Ficklepicklejuice, thank you so much for your comment! I am glad my video was useful. In mid november I plan on making a few more posts regarding Spanish learning :). Hope to see you again! And great Youtube name hahahaha!
Dude, seriously you are amazing, thank you for being thorough with this; in Buenos Aires now, have been taking private classes outside of classes at an institute and literally, just yesterday, ordered some practice makes perfect books; I see your advice to blkrican2009 and see that you recommend those books. I hope to be fluent by next summer (plan to stay abroad next semester in Buenos Aires) doing independent research in the language. Prior to coming hear had VERY little spanish; ¿es posible?
@WaywardWinds Hey WaywardWinds! How exciting to hear you are in Buenos Aires! I would love to visit Buenos Aires sometime. The PMP books should be very useful for you. Well, if you need any other advice let me know. If you want to work on your porteño accent, send me an audio clip or vid and I'd be happy to take a look. I don't speak with that accent, but I am familiar with its phonology and should be able to help you :)

How did u put in hours of Spanish daily? I do not have the time to even study it but I love the language. I took Spanish 1 & 2 in college. I can really remember everything from Spanish 1 but I can not remember anything from Spanish 2. I am going to be studying abroad in Costa Rica next summer 2012. Hopefully that can improve my Spanish, I will but studying 4-5 hrs a day in school and then I plan to study another 2 hours daily at home on my own. Hopefully I can get more conversational in 2 mnths
@blkrican2009 Here is how I put in hours of Spanish daily. Also, a couple questions for you: 1. First, how do you organize your time during and between activities? Right now, for example, you are on a weight-loss program. What music are you listening to while you are doing cardio or walking around town? Could you be listening to a beginner Spanish podcast like Notes in Spanish (excellent resource). 2. Make sure you are studying the right resources. Most books that they give you in class suck.
@dychui Right now, I don't workout like I should because my schedule is crazy this semester. I am either at work or at school all the time. I barely have time to study and do my homework but my first job was at McDonalds when i was 14. I worked there until I was 17. I worked with mostly Cubanos and Mexicanos. So now, when I speak Spanish adapted their accent. Even my Spanish teacher thought I was from Cuba when I spoke Spanish.
@blkrican2009 2. On that note, a few suggestions for you to build a good base and the read-order. Start with A. Practice Makes Perfect Spanish Verb Tenses. 2nd Ed. This will build a strong grammatical foundation. B. Next, Prac Makes Perfect Pronouns & Prepositions. Building foundation. C. Next, Prac Makes Perfect Spanish Conversation. Increase your conversational fluency. D. Next, buy Breaking Out of Beginner's Spanish by Keenan. E. Next, Speaking Spanish Like a Native by Keenan.
@dychui I have the Practice Makes Perfect Verb Tenses and Pronouns/Prepositions. My schedule is just so crazy right now I don't have the time to put into studying them. I work 40 hours a week and I am in school full time as well.
@blkrican2009 You can buy most of these books used off Amazon. That should be a good start. The Keenan books will help you understand the importance of pause words in any language (English: ummm, hmm, etc.; Spanish: pues nada, así que, pues, bueno, etc.). It will help you learn how certain concepts are conceptualized differently in Spanish than in English and will be a HUGE help for your overall fluency. Be aware the Keenan books are based on Mexican Spanish. Take what you need from them.
@blkrican2009 3. Ask yourself, how many Spanish-speaking buddies do you have? Try making an account on Lenguajero (google it). It's free and you can see people online at ANY time that want to practice their English. I personally use Craigslist to find intercambios (lang exchanges), then meet up in coffee shops. If you are only in class and then studying on your own, your fluency will stagnate. You need to get out there, make mistakes and get corrected in real conversation.
5. At some point in your Spanish (after your each intermediate-advanced) you probably want to choose an accent and a regional type of Spanish to focus on. It doesn't matter what accent you choose, they are all good. The important thing is to be consistent. The easiest thing is to choose the Spanish of the people that you live around; you'll always have a great source of information. Now, listen to podcasts in that accent for hours and hours, always listening actively, to hone your ear.
